Is October a good time to go? Is it in hurricane season? I will have 3 kids 5 and under so I want nice weather and low crowds. Will WDW be decorated for Halloween?

The later October you get, the better chance of avoiding hurricane, but no guarantee. Low Crowds? not really. The crowd level is pretty busy (not Christmas or Easter), but not low. With food and wine festival and MNSSHP, and people avoiding hurricane season, along with conventions and other activities, it can get pretty busy. However, with that in mind, it never stops us. We are pretty loyal to going in early May (2 weeks) and late October (10 days) every year for more than 10 years. October is my second favorite time of year to go. We are planning Oct. 18-27 this year.

In my opinion, October is the BEST time to go. And yes, WDW celebrates halloween with a big halloween party called Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party(do a search for it here you'll find lots of info, it's sometimes referred to as MNSSHP). It is still hurricane season but not as bad as Sept. We haven't encountered any problems, but we have come close. I guess we're just lucky. The crowds are also manageable, but it seems increasing every year. Enjoy

What happens if a hurricane/bad weather comes, can you cancel your trip and get your money back? We would be buying hotel only

I forgot about those pesky Hurricanes... last year not so bad, two years ago - - many travelers plans were interrupted, many Floridian Dis'ers were upset at the amount of posts concerned about postponing trips when they were dealing with so much!!

I had two friends that cancelled, or rebooked trips - twice late Sept, then an Oct another problematic hurricane!! All in all those that were there did much better than those that couldnt get there - the roof of MCO was even affected...

Remember the reports of the food in the lobby??? How some would "take" the free food - not enough food for all - some resorts did better than other...

We were lucky last year, I"m planning another trip, and last night I dreamt of hurricanes - and not being able to reschedule!! OK it was a nightmare!!

Definately something to consider, or maybe to be 'aware' of in our planning, least of which is trip insurance... imo anyway...

We love Oct. MNSSHP is a lot of fun and we also hit Halloween Horror Nights at Universal (not for small kids)
Yes its still Hurricane Season but we live on the Gulf Coast anyway so they could just as likely come here. And after sitting on the freeway for about 24 hours last Sept (the great Rita evac) and only ever getting 1 hour from my house I"d rather take my chances at Disney.

October is a great time to go, yes there are hurricanes and the past couple years have had record number. It is also still warm and humid so if you are going to the Halloween party keep that in mind with regards to your costume. :)

We go in October every year...the Food and Wine Fest at Epcot is also going on....yummy!

We usually go in October for the Food and Wine Festival, we love it!!!
The crowds have grown in October over each of our past 4 trips. The difference is noticiable. But the crowds are not as bad as summer or holiday times. If you plan, the crowds are manageable.
We missed hurricane Wilma last October by about 15 hours. But I read afterwards that the parks re-opened by 1 PM, so it wasn't too bad.
If you are there during a hurricane, the parks will most likely close. You will lose that day on your ticket, I do not think they refund days like that.
I wouldn't worry about hurricane season, nor would I let it prevent me from going in October.
