October 2010 Car Rentals

What are your dates? You may be too far out for it to get accepted.

10/7-10/20... seems like it's right during when the pp got her deal!

Did you select economy? I selected economy for $13 per day, but once my bid was accepted they gave me an offer to upgrade to an intermediate for $2 more per day.

Yes! I tried economy, then compact, then mid-sized (thinking maybe that was how you got your deal). You must've lucked out!

Alamo just released a $25 coupon good on a weekly rental (5 days or more)and the coupon expires Nov 15

AD6974JDM

i just called alamo. the rep told me ad6974jdm is no longer available for pick up date oct 21. rep said a certain number of vehicles can be rented using that coupon and that number has been reached for my pickup date.

tried using visa $30 off code but max was reached on that code too.

I've booked Alamo midsize for 10 days starting 10/31 for $194 total through Costco. I was hoping to get that price down some as it got closer but that same coupon is now almost $700 total. What in the world? I just went through lots of coupon codes to different sites and now can't find anything less than $600.

How does Priceline work? Never used them before, but I'm willing to try, but I really don't want to get stuck with an offsite rental site. Do you get to choose who you're bidding on?

I'm very happy with my rate, but saving a few $$$ would be nice, too.

Priceline has two options—book at a slight discount the same way you would on Expedia, Orbitz, etc. or bid on a reservation without knowing what company you'll get. If you do the latter, you have to give your CC info and you will be charged if they find one that matches your price. Also, no refunds/changes.

I did a car rental this way through Priceline for our last WDW trip and got stuck with Hertz, which was off-site at the time. However, Priceline says you'll get a rental car from either Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz and National—all of which are now on-site.

Total $117 incl tax for a 4 day midsize weekend rental with Hertz, Sat-Tues. Used aaa.com/hertz which saved me a good bit off hertz.com with AAA CDP (thanks flyertalk.com poster who pointed this out!) and $30 off weekend stay.

Considering most sites I tried like costcotravel, various codes from boards, or kayak gave me $240 as the lowest price, I'm pretty happy that the hertz deal was such an "easy" one to find. Comparatively, should have known to check with there first and limited my hunt to a few other sites when it was clear that this is the best cancel-able rate. Skipping a Thurs/Friday night also helped lower the price at Hertz, I think.

Hertz is on-site now??? That's great, thanks for the update. We have a toddler so lugging the stroller, car seat, her, plus all the luggage is just not worth it and we always book onsite.

Well I tried Priceline's bid and for my time period starting on 10/31, and it tells me $35-$36/day is likely to be accepted. Guess I'll stick with my Alamo rate.

So if you reserve through the AAA site, you can still cancel this reservation? Or did you reserve through Herzt with a AAA code of some kind?

I'm looking for a car for the end of Oct/first part of Nov. and so far everything is soooo expensive. I usually go with National but can't find anything reasonable yet but they may come down in price. But the aaa.com/hertz was a bit cheaper but I don't want to reserve that and find I can't cancel it if National does come down in price. And I didn't see anything that said if I could cancel without penalty. But I could have missed it.

Thanks for any help.

Well here's something I've never seen before from the Alamo website when I was pricing reservations:

Our apologies...

Alamo is completely sold out of vehicles at:

Orlando Intl Arpt from 010/20/2010 to 010/26/2010
Sold out

Flexible with your dates? Try changing your pick-up date or location.

For our Oct trip, we need a minivan Sat 10/16-Thu 10/21. Best price I've seen so far is the Orlando Magicard rate of $52/day + fees = $335 for the 5 days from Thrifty. Corp code 004M001010 which requires a free Magicard.

I've been jerked around on prices from Thrifty before. It's best to keep checking them at different times of the week and keep checking up to a day or two before you go. The prices on the website jump all over. On a previous trip I checked day before I left and dropped $150+ off the exact same dates and car. Reservations don't require a deposit, so you can always reserve a lower rate if you find one, and then cancel the previous rez.

For example, my next trip is 7 days in late Jan. A Sat-Sat rental, midsize, is over $300/week. The Fri-Sat (8 days) rental is $138!! Darn, have to spend another night with the mouse, pay for a hotel, and still come out ahead.

aaa.com/hertz with a coupon, just click on the link to coupons below the coupon box to pop up valid coupons.

After you reserve it will provide a confirmation number that you can punch into hertz.com.

I don't believe it charges it I cancel, but haven't looked into the details recently. hertz.com states "Is there a penalty to cancel my reservation?
Some rates and vehicle types reserved through a travel agent or through the Hertz reservations phone numbers require a guarantee and may have a cancellation penalty associated with the reservation. However, reservations currently processed through our site do not have any guarantee or penalty associated to the rate nor vehicle confirmed. If a penalty applies, complete information will be included on the Rate screen and on the Confirmation screen. "
My contract T&C states "A Frequent Flyer Surcharge of up to $1.00 per day up to a maximum of $5.25 per rental may apply when renters choose to take miles or credits from a U.S. and Canadian Frequent Flyer program.

Please note that at the time of rental you will need to present a current driver's license and a valid major credit card. Hertz locations also accept most, but not all, debit cards. Use of a debit card to rent a vehicle is subject to a review of your credit history. A few locations do not accept debit cards at time of rental. If you have questions about the acceptability of your form of payment, call Hertz."

Orlando airport's website states hertz is onsite now
http://www.orlandoairports.net/transport/rental_cars.htm
as does Hertz's own
https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/loca...cationDetailsView.jsp&eoag=MCOT16&locType=pUp
"Hertz is located at both Terminal A and Terminal B, your vehicle will be at the terminal where your flight arrives. "
So be sure to add your arriving flight number if you're part of Hertz Gold.

Evidently they moved on-site some time in April?

I think that the holiday weekend is killing us. I am trying to get a lesser rate with Dollar than I already have and it's just not happening. I can't do Priceline because my drop off time isn't the same as my pick up time. I think that I am stuck with my $316. I am picking it up at the airport on 10/7 and dropping it off on 10/14 at the Regal Sun which is at Downtown Disney. I am over it and I am going to stop looking now.

Good Luck everyone!
