October/1st Anniversary Trip Report! - Updated! 12/18/2010

This Chapter is Open Seasonally

As I was saying, while we were riding on the Backlot Tour I saw something I had never noticed before. As soon as we got off the ride, I went to inspect further...

I've never been to Disney in the winter, so having a chance to see all of the Christmas light decorations being put up was a real treat. I also had no idea they started putting them up this early into the Fall. Do they start their holiday season before or after Thanksgiving? Either way, Mr. Arb and I agreed that when we get to plan our next trip to Disney World, it would definitely be at a time when we can see the lights in action.

Since we were in the area, I got a picture at an old classic:

IMG_0319.jpg

Mr. Arb's knee was starting to bug him, so we grabbed a bottle of water and sat for a few minutes outside of Pizza Planet. Since we were nearby Muppet Vision 3-D, we decided it would be a nice break out of the heat and were able to walk directly into the theatre.

IMG_0323.jpg

After the show, we went into the Star Tours gift shop, and I saw some Star Wars themed Potato Heads that I had never seen before:

IMG_0326.jpg

There was also a mini Storm Trooper figurine wearing Mickey ears that I meant to buy later, but completely forgot.

Since the theme of the afternoon seemed to be things that I had never seen in Disney before, I don't know why I was so surprised by this one. Guess what was actually open:

IMG_0332.jpg

The show itself wasn't that great, but we did have a lot of fun in Sound Works, the area after you exit the theatre, but before you go outside. They had machines where you could provide your own voiceovers to different Disney films (the two I saw were Snow White and Mickey & the Beanstalk), as well as creating your own sound effects.

IMG_0330.jpg

When it's open, I believe you can just walk right into the Sound Works portion, so I'd recommend to skip the movie part and spend a little time in there.

After we left, I saw my absolute favorite thing in all of Disney and got my number 1 Must Take picture:

IMG_0333.jpg

NOW it felt like a Disney vacation!

It was now time to use our Tower of Terror fast passes, so I snapped some pictures along the way.

IMG_0337.jpg

The Streetsmosphere people were performing, so we stopped to watch them for a few minutes

IMG_0338.jpg

And then, it was time!

IMG_0299.jpg

(Woohoo nostalgia setting! I couldn't resist!)

I mentioned in my PTR that one of my goals was to get a picture when the doors open at the top of the tower and you can see the park. I definitely chickened out, and this was our only ToT stop during the trip. At least I still have some goals for next time!

By now, we were both getting incredibly hungry, so we decided to hop on a bus to the Poly and see if they would seat us early for our reservation at Kona. We checked in with the hostess around 7:15 PM, and went to the bar by 'Ohana while we waited. Mr. Arb noticed that has a variety of beer he had never tried before, so he ordered one of them (I do not for the life of me remember what it was). I'm not much of a drinker, and all the stools at the bar were occupied, so I decided to head to the Poly gift shop and have my first adventure in Vinylmation trading.

As I was waiting in line to trade, I started chatting with another couple in the gift shop and explained the process to them. And I will do so here for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about!

You can go up to the counter in any resort gift shop, as well as D Street in Downtown Disney (it may also be available at other DtD stores, and in the parks, but I don't know exactly where). Basically, if you see a box that looks like this, you can do it:

IMG_0460.jpg

You give the attendant your Vinylmation figure that you want to trade in (in my case, the one that looked like a set of teeth), and pick a number between 1 and 24. They swap your figure for the one in that slot. You can only trade at the box once during each transaction. If you are not thrilled with your selection however, you do have one other option. The attendant will have a small display case showing 3 Vinylmation figures, and you can trade the figure you received with one in the display case. Apologies for not getting pictures of that.

I didn't see any in the display case that I liked, so I was content (for now) with what I had received.

IMG_0355.jpg

I definitely prefer Easter Bunnies to teeth!

I went back to Mr. Arb, and around 7:45 our buzzer went off. In addition to their normal selections, people on the dining plan can select their food from a prix fixe menu where in addition to the entree and dessert, you also can get an appetizer. I decided to select from that, and Mr. Arb ordered off the regular menu.

Pot Stickers - wok-seared duck dumplings with creamy ginger soy sauce
IMG_0340.jpg

They were delicious, and I'm really happy I ordered them, because we wound up waiting about half an hour for our entrees, and I am not exaggerating. The tables on both sides of us received and finished eating their entrees before we even got ours. We never got an explanation for the wait either, but I was definitely annoyed for the rest of the meal.

Teriyaki-style New York Strip - sirloin strip grilled with pineapple teriyaki glaze (on the side) served with rice and stir-fried broccolini
IMG_0342.jpg

Pan Asian Noodles - Asian egg noodles with sliced chicken, pineapple, seasonal vegetables, and a housemade sweet and sour sauce
IMG_0343.jpg

Fortunately, our deserts did not take as long:

Kilauea Torte
IMG_0344.jpg

Pineapple Upside Down Cake
IMG_0346.jpg

And they brought us out some anniversary cupcakes, which we barely ate because we were stuffed by this point.

IMG_0345.jpg

After we were finished dinner, we took the monorail to the Magic Kingdom to catch a bus to POP, and were able to see some of Wishes from our window. We arrived back around 9:45 PM, where we had one last surprise waiting for us...

Next Chapter:...I don't have a creative name for it yet.

Also, for those of you who have your own TR's and PTR's going, I apologize for being behind on them! I have my final for the class I'm taking on November 19, and then we're moving on November 20. Between studying and packing, I haven't had much free time to keep up. Once my class is over I won't have another until January, so I'll definitely have much more time to catch up with everyone!

I've never seen Sounds Dangerous open before, either! How neat you got to see the Osborne lights going up! And dinner at Kona looks yummy! It's definitely on my list of places to try. :thumbsup2

yay update :goodvibes Hope you guys have a great Halloween pirate: DBF is working today...so I am on here :rotfl:

I wish I had checked to see if Sounds Dangerous was open...I have never seen that before and the area after the show sounds cool!!

The singing in the rain picture came out great...too bad you didnt get the ToT picture, I would love to see what that looks like :goodvibes

Your dinner looked awesome, especially that pineapple upside down cake!! yum! Though you had to wait FOREVER for it which stinks!

You know I really never understood the Vinylmation thing...but those cute lil guys are starting to grow on me lol

Yay for an update! Thanks for explaining the Vinylmation stuff. I saw them in the parks, and wondered who on earth would buy the things. Now I can see how they'd become pretty addictive. I hadn't looked into it at all and didn't realize you could trade them if you didn't like what you got! I agree that Easter Bunny is soo much better than those teeth!

Yummy food pics!

Awesome update. I'd be afraid to take a pic on TOT as I'm afraid I'd lose the camera as I'm holding on for dear life. Sorry your meal took so long at Kona...that's not right, especially with everyone else around you being served and done before you even got yours.

Sounds Dangerous is one of those--you did it once and you DON'T have to do it again. :thumbsup2

I totally missed the start of your TR! So sorry!!

I'm here now though! And all caught up! I know they had the lights on during the Wine & Dine race, but I don't know when they have them going all the time.

I was under the impression that they leave those lights up all year round. I've seen them everytime I've gone there. But it's usually in the fall or January. Never braved Disney in the summer so maybe I'm mistaken.

Great update! You people and your food porn, making me hungry!

Just checking in with all of you to say that I haven't forgotten about you! I was going to do an update last weekend, but I had dear friend pass away from cancer on Friday. It's been a whirlwind of emotions, as you can imagine. Next week I take my final for the class I'm currently in, and I move next Saturday. I promise promise promise to respond to the comments from my last entry AND to make a new entry as soon as I get my computer set up at our new place. And hopefully I'll get to catch up on your TR's then too.

Miss you all!

Sorry to hear about your friend, Arb.

Sounds like you've got a lot going on....take all the time you need, we'll be here when you can post again. :goodvibes

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.

Good luck with the school work and the move. We'll be here when you get back.

Hello there! Mr. Arb and I moved into our new place last week, and I have some pictures for you!

I hope they satisfy you for the time being while I still search some of our boxes for my trip notebook. I'm pretty sure it's in one of the boxes in our office, which is one of the rooms we haven't really done much with yet.

The photo above are my Vinylmation canvas prints that we bought at D Street during our trip. I didn't realize until we got home that they are nearly impossible to get any information on, with the exception that they were created for the D Street opening. Those were the only two we saw in the store, but I've seen a handful of pictures of other prints online. I keep checking eBay, hoping to find one for sale, but no luck yet.

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday!

I completely missed the start of your TR!

Disney, Food porn, a sad passing (my condolences), exams and a new abode....If the first 4 pages are anything to go by, I'm looking forward to the rest of your trip. popcorn::

Nice place! I love your green appliances :) And the keurig coffee machine! Those things are awesome. We had one in our office but none of the older people could figure out how to use it!

The condo looks great and you are making progress! Can't wait to see/hear more.

Those prints are so cool!!! lucky to snag those especially since you cant find them anywhere else :confused3

As a newly recruited DoleWhip fan, I'm subscribing to your report! I can't wait to see more.

Don't feel rushed though - I'm terribly sorry for your loss and you should take all the time you need. ::sends good thoughts::

It's probably okay at you missed it at the beginning, since now it means you won't have to wait quite as long as the others for the next update. ;-)

Oh man. I love that coffee machine. I am no where near functioning enough in the morning to make a pot of coffee, so this solves that problem for me!

Mr. Arb gave me a huge side-eye when I ordered the mixer and tea kettle in lime green, since I hadn't seen the shade in person, but I didn't care. I figure I'll be using them more than him anyway.

The condo looks great and you are making progress! Can't wait to see/hear more.

Thank you! I'm glad we've gotten the majority of boxes out of the way now, so I don't feel like I'm going to trip over them anytime I walk more than 3 steps.

I probably would have had them raid the back room for any others if I knew I wouldn't be able to track more down once I got home. I absolutely LOVE this one:

Thank you :grouphug: It's hard to believe that it's coming up to a month since she's been gone. I keep seeing/hearing things that remind me of stories she used to tell, so it's nice to know that even if she's not here, her memory isn't going anywhere.

The new place looks great! :goodvibes I love the green KitchenAid mixer. :thumbsup2

Thank you! We're having a cookie swap thing at work in two weeks, so I'm happy to have a chance to use it again.

Okay, so when we last left off, Mr. Arb and I had just arrived back to our room at POP, around 9:45 PM. I was ready to slip off my shoes and just collapse in bed, but something on the table in our room caught my eye...

IMG_0348.jpg

My parents had a small gift sent to our room!

IMG_0351.jpg

Thanks Mom and Dad!!

I gave my Mom a quick call after we opened the gift. She was really relieved to hear that we had gotten it, since apparently they were supposed to give it to us at check in. She was getting nervous when she hadn't heard from us all day, and wanted us to spend it on a couple souvenirs for ourselves. I think we could manage to come up with a few things we wanted. :thumbsup2

We both slept great that night, at least until the family next door to us started to get ready. We both woke up somewhere between 6 and 6:30, and we able to hear every single word they were speaking through the walls. Not exactly the Disney magic I was hoping for on my first morning!

About an hour later, we finally got up and started getting ready. As I jumped in the shower, Mr. Arb went to Everything Pop to grab some breakfast. He got a bagel and bacon, and got me a cinnamon bun.

IMG_0356.jpg

After an uneventful bus ride, we arrived at Epcot around 9:30, and of course had to get some obligatory golf ball pictures.

IMG_0358.jpg

IMG_0360.jpg

Our first stop was to the Festival Center to check out some of the Food & Wine Festival Merch. Now, last year Disney made messenger bags out of the Food & Wine Festival banners from the previous year. They were a hot commodity and sold out fairly quickly. I mean, Mr. Arb and I were there opening week and never even saw them. So when I heard that were making new bags this year, I connected with another DIS-er (redzinner) and she picked up a bag for me on one of her trips to the festival. Apparently Disney was doing a better job this year with rolling out the bags and having a larger supply of them, so redzinner told me to check out the ones they had while I was at the Festival, and told me if I see any of the ones out better than the one she picked up for me, so she knew whether to return it, or drop it off at our resort. I decided I was still happy with the one redzinner had picked out, so we left the Festival Center and went to grab some Fast Passes for Test Track.

IMG_0421.jpg

After we got our FPs, we decided to head over to Innoventions. On our way, we saw three guys playing percussion music using ovens, pots and pans. Their name escapes me at the moment, but we were very impressed.

IMG_0362.jpg

When they finished, we entered Innoventions and walked straight into Test Lab.

IMG_0365.jpg

We had a good time playing around with everything, including trying to break a TV

IMG_0364.jpg

As we made our way around, we saw something I had spotted in another Trip Report and was very excited to try!

IMG_0366.jpg

For those of you who haven't experienced this yet, Sum of All Thrills is an activity where you create your own virtual roller coaster, then get to ride it. You sit in a little pod attached to a large mechanical arm which moves you all around and gives you the sensation of going down large drops and loops.

IMG_0367.jpg

At the end of your ride, a number comes up on the screen that tells you what the Sum of Your Thrills is, and we got a 636. Don't ask me what that number means, or how it compares to others, because I have absolutely no idea. :confused3

After we left Innoventions, we decided to check out Living with the Land.

IMG_0375.jpg

This is one of the rides that I really remember from my childhood, but hadn't ridden sense then, so I was looking forward to it.

IMG_0379.jpg

IMG_0381.jpg

IMG_0387.jpg

IMG_0388.jpg

IMG_0393.jpg

IMG_0396.jpg

IMG_0398.jpg

After the ride was over, we both thought it might be interesting to do the Behind the Seeds Tour. We went to the info desk to get the details about it. We didn't have time to do it then, because we had lunch reservations in about 20 minutes, but planned to try and go later during our trip. If you have read my TR title, I'll let you guess how that one worked out.

We left The Land to make our way over to The Living Seas...and get very lost and confused trying to find where exactly the Coral Reef entrance was. After walking in circles a few times, and finally finding some helpful cast members, we arrived!

After a very short wait, we were seated for what I think was my favorite meal of our trip.

Mr. Arb ordered the Grilled New York Strip Steak - served with horseradish smashed potatoes and asparagus.
IMG_0405.jpg

While I had something new on the menu: Rainbow Seared Trout - with warm salad of white beans, arugula, tomatoes, crispy bacon, aged balsamic vinegar and brown butter
IMG_0406.jpg

I cannot say enough about how delicious that was. My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it.

We ended things with a classic Baileys and Jack Daniel's Mousse - topped with a ganache and chocolate cigar
