Perhaps I'm just looking much too early? When I look into October flights, the prices are OUTRAGEOUS, most with layovers. Except Spirit Air, which scares me.
Do these things usually get better as you wait a bit? I'm looking 10 months in advance right now.

I think it depends on when and where you are flying from. Around Columbus week lots of schools are off. So that is a busy time. In the east, many schools are off for the Jewish High Holy days when there in Oct. so it can be pricey from that area. We live in Wisconsin and have a state wide teacher convention during the last week of Oct. so airfare for the last two weeks of Oct. from here is usually much higher than if you would go at another time in the fall. We usually go the last week of Oct. now and I book airfare with either SW or Airtran typically the first day it comes out in march or april. HTH:)

We are waiting for airfare to hopefully go down. If not we are flying into Tampa. Which is running 100 less than flying into Orlando out of Detroit right now. I hope to have everything booked by June. I usually have airfare bought and paid for 4-6 months before we depart.

I'm tracking this time frame as well, and prices from Portland are the same as last year; not really high...from the Northwest.
