My Mom's friend was telling her(both are elderly ladies so this may have been misunderstood) that her sister in New Orleans was able to get the permit to fix up her home , due to Katrina damage. But she has not been able to get an :Occupancy Permit". Does this mean the repairs have to be inspected before a person can move back into the home??
:confused3

I cannot speak for NOLA specifically--but generally, without an occupancy permit the structure cannot technically be occupied. In this case--she could go and work on it and fix it up--but that is the extent of what she is able to do.

Was her home condemned? If so--that may be why she is having trouble.

ETA: They may inquire if an occupancy permit is even required. If it isn't required--that could be another reason for rejection.

Hope they get their home repaired soon!

Our condo in Orange Beach had very miminal damage with Ivan in 2004. We still don't have an certificate of occupancy!!! I am hoping to get one soon so we can use it this year. We only had the basic water leakage into the unit and not even any broken windows. All the units had to be gutted (sheetrock, carpet) and re-worked to prevent mold. Our unit is complete (has been) but the city has not cleaned off the property. There are huge mounds of sand in the yard area and you would think they would want that sifted and put back on the beach. I think the pool is now completed (it had to be re -done since there was a huge surge) and the boat dock was just wired for electrical so it should be done. But we have the basic services, power, water, sewer. If they community leaders feel they don't have enough basic services in place (hospital, 911, etc) maybe they will be delaying the occupancy permits.

It makes sense that they would want to ensure that work is being done to code. Just think of all the "fly by night contractors" that could be taking advantage of people. People promising to do the job for 1/2 the price. Just makes bigger problems later on if not built correctly.

That could be it , also. Thanks for the info.
