Occupancy options

I'm simply asking for your views on occupancy and the rules?

  • DVC should only allow the number stated in the legal paperwork plus a child under 3.

  • DVC should be more flexible and allow an extra person in at least some of the units sizes

  • DVC can allow the entire fraternity in the studio for all I care.

In light of the recent exchanges, I'm curious as to what the members on this board think. I'm requesting that no one respond, just vote.

Maybe when I was younger I would have voted for the Fraternity................

Your wording in the middle option is done in a very reasonable manner. This will be an interesting poll.

I voted for "DVC should be more flexible and allow an extra person in at least some of the units sizes" But I would like to add only AFTER the legal peperwork has been modified to reflect this change and all members notified. Once changed it should be enforced.

We always get a one bedroom villa for the two of us and a two bedroom villa or larger when we travel with friends or family. Easily 90% of the time we have only two occupants in a one bedroom and 4 occupants in a two bedroom...half the stated occupancy limit. I suspect many other villas are at less than capacity on any given night. Although we'll NEVER exceed the current stated occupancy limits in our villa I would not prevent other owners from doing so. An extra occupant in a villa can be offset by villas that are below the stated capacity.

My concern is not the number of occupants in the villa but the number of people using the common areas such as the pool.

I answered the "fraternity" can stay. However, there are two caveats.

1) No matter how many people are in a room, DVC should bill the member for damage beyond expected cleaning - including carpet cleaning for spilled beverages (whether the fraternity's keg or my four year olds milk now souring the carpet), damage to walls (whether rowdy college students or crayon), etc.

2) DVC should handle noise complaints, and the expectation should be for reasonable levels of noise - particularly before 8 am and after 10pm - but always reasonable. Once again, doesn't matter if its the frat party or if its my loud obnoxious children.

After 64 responses, I think we can all understand why the discussions get heated--very divided opinions! :)

I chose the "rule follower" pick. However, if there'd been an option where I could get an entire "sorority" in my Studio, I might have reconsidered....

;) ;) ;)

Very funny Dr. T!!! I voted for the rules. Even though one extra really doesn't bother me, I worry about the "give an inch and they'll take a mile" factor. I do agree with crisi regarding the damage though, and I also agree with DBBN as we will probably never have more than the 6 of us in a 2 bedroom. Thanks for the poll Dean:)

We just had four in a one bedroom at SSR. It was decidedly uncomfortable. We had tried to change it to a 2 bedroom when we invited my SIL along for the trip, but we were unable to get one. We will never do a one bedroom with more than our son who is 11.

Stick with the rules as they are written.

I could definitely see it for the situation you describe. For us with three little boys, one still under 3 we wouldn't have them sleep by themselves in the second bedroom anyway, we all sleep together in the same room on vacations. The boys need assistance during the night, and we like to know where they are, they are still at the age where they need to be supervised. Besides, we enjoy being together. The second bedroom would be completely empty for our family while the children are still small. When they get bigger, defintely 2 bedroom. For now it just doesn't make sense for us to have that empty bedroom that's not used sitting next to us. I don't advocate an entire sorority in a one bedroom, but two married adults and 3 small children of the same gender is very comfortable for now. In fact it would probably be a little creepy having the one extra room that's not being used as a part of our accomodations, it's one more sink, tub, bathroom area and balconey access that has to be monitored. If the 5 people consisted of any additional adult guests besides one couple as you describe above, I'd have to agree, the second bedroom is needed. But in our case the second bedroom isn't needed. Someone else can enjoy it as a studio accomodation for one or two people. I don't take two parking spaces by straddling the line when I park my van and only need one parking space.

I voted! And just as I keep my political views private, I'm not telling on this on either!

As my DS says, " I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!" .... College kids ....hmmm

I feel if you can make yourself comfortable then go for it.

I can't see a family of 5, as an example, going for a 2 bedroom because the additional child is over 3 years of age, when they can make do with a 1 bd.

Dean...per your request, I'm not commenting.

I'm just bumping! :p

Having a SIL changes the whole scenario of an extra child. Most people putting five in a room are doing so with three small children. An in-law changes the comfort of things. Of course, with one child, it's easy to vote stick with the rules.

the greatest thing about dvc is the options and versatility.

We just stayed with 24 people in three 2-bedrooms.

Now that is 8 per room.

But I'm pretty sure that some nights some of the kids bunked up so that one room had more than 8 and one had less.

Not sure it really matters, ultimately.

The room set ups are kind of weird, I wouldn't mind more flexibility.

If we went with just our one child, a one-bedroom is fine, put him on the sofa. But for a family of four, I could see a different layout working out better - all the one-bedrooms just have one bed - I could see a different layout with two beds in there working better for some families/situations. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing some studio rooms outside of OKW having that two bed setup; it is nice to have the option of dedicated two-bedrooms, thank goodness. There's two kinds of two bedrooms, two kinds of one bedrooms and studios wouldn't bother me any.

But then I'd like to see preference go to home resort first.

Our DVC Board policy is to allow discussion of DVC occupancy only on the designated thread (always stuck on top of the board). Since this poll has turned into a discussion thread, we will have to now refer you to the Occupancy Thread for further discussion. Thank you.
