My oldest DD went to homecoming last night in a large group. There were couples, single girls and single guys which was nice.

All 19 gathered at one girl's house to take pictures so I was glad I got to see everybody. Out of the 11 girls that were there 10 had either a gorgeous black or a black & pink dress which was funny. The 11th girl wore a pale pink dress. They all looked beautiful. What amazed me though was that 7 of the girls wore dirty $2.00 flip flops with their dresses. They spent a lot of money on their dresses, they all had expensive up-dos but ruined the look with flip flops.

Since I've known these girls for many years, I can tell you that every one of them can absolutely afford a pair of shoes. I know for a fact that they wear heels at other times, even to school. I'm just guessing that flip flops with formal wear may be the new trend. Even if they would have bought new, dressier flip flops it would have looked better, but they were the cheap, rubber ones and most were dirty. It wouldn't have been so bad if the dresses were long, but they were short, cocktail-type dresses.

Oh well, I guess we were the last generation that was willing to suffer for fashion! I guess I'm just getting old!;)

dirty flip flops? It must have just been something they decided to do, I hadn't heard of that before.

It must be a trend. I see lots of jr high/HS age girls running around in very CUTE outfits that definately call for a nice pair of tennis shoes or flats or something other than the worn out, dirty, scuzzy Old Navy flipflops they wear.

My DD #1 has been wearing flip flops a lot this year. It's hard to find "cool" school shoes and she is trying to keep her sneakers nice through volleyball season. She's 12. A lot of the girls wear flip flops all the time. Now that it's getting colder I suppose we'll need some generic sneakers or find some other shoes--not a lot of neat shoes for a 12 year old who wears a size 9!

I guess that's fashionable now... My neighbor's DD did wear strappy heels for a dance last year, but did take a pair of flip flops for dancing. Hers were nice, black with rhinestones, but I still think it just ruined her "look". Her mom wasn't thrilled with it, but her DD said that "all the girls are wearing them".

Flipflops with formal dresses is the trend around here for that age group. Actually...flipflops with most anything.

Last spring I'd say about half the girls in my DD's senior class wore them to prom. DD has a huge wardrobe of all kinds of colors and styles of flipflops. Her rational is that they are comfortable, inexpensive, and as far as dances go...she's going to take her shoes off to dance anyway. I can't say she's ever worn any that are dirty or inappropriate looking to a dance though. Her junior year, she went to senior prom in a black dress and her footwear was flip-flop style, but "dressy" pearl/rhinestone covered with a little wedge heel. They were $20 on sale at a Baker's shoe store. She wore the same ones this year with a coral dress. There were others in dressy flip-flop style sandals, but some of her friends wore regular plastic solid color flip flops....in a color matching their dress or white. Their rational also was comfort and price...and you won't see them anyway under a long dress. :) I don't really care for the look, but as long as they're not dirty it's not a big deal to me with a long dress.

Probably 3 quarters of the girls shown below had some sort of flip-flop style footwear on. (They put the shoe money towards the stretch hummer I guess ;) ) DD is 5th girl from the left :)

Flip flops with formal wear is the new trend? How interesting. All the girls who wore flip flops to the homecoming dance will have a photo to commemorate the event and someday when they have a daughter or a niece who asks, they'll get to explain that it "was the style".

Who starts these "trends"?

My DD graduated in 2002 and I didn't see one girl with flip flops on for prom. I've never heard of it.

It was a beautful, VERY elegant, black tie wedding..

Bridesmaids were in beautiful black dresses, some to the floor, others cocktail length...

...and yep, flip flops.:p

We have a store here called "Journey's" which have a ton of "cool" shoes for teens.

My friends DD went to a school dance. She wore shoes to the dance, but once the girls arrive, they all take off their shoes and put on funky socks. The kind that have different characters on them like Sponge Bob. I thought that was weirder than flip flops.

What kills me is when the kids who work at Abercombie come in to work in January wearing flip flops. We always giggle at them when they struggle through the ice/snow to drop off their deposit at the bank.

I think girls just wear flip flops everywhere. Two weeks ago, I sat behind two teens who wore them to church, and were playing with their toes all during Mass. Yuck. One of the clerks in my office pretty much summed it up as they're cute and cheap, and they buy a different pair pretty much for every outfit. I have flip flops myself, of course, and I've even worn them to church. I just don't play with my toenails in public (about as attractive as picking one's nose).

It's getting colder here but I'm not ready to give up my flip flops yet. I just got the most perfect nail colour for my toes and I don't want to hide it :D

I'm planning on wearing flip flops to my wedding next year. I'd need a flat shoe anyways and I figure no one would see them. Plus, I'm used to dancing in them!

Flip flops is the "in" thing this year, with everything.

Ranatra-it wasn't the thing to do in 2002. It's new for this year.

I'm 16 and for my past three formals, I've worn heels for several reasons:

1) My dress was too long, and I didn't want it to drag
2) You could see my shoes and my all of my flip-flops aren't fancy
3) I'm used to wearing heels to school and church, so they didn't hurt my feet that badly.

My friends, however, have worn flip-flops, but only when they wear long dresses or their flip-flops are really fancy.

As far as the dirty ones to a formal, that's just strange!!

But trends are just that, trends!! I'm sure y'all had crazy ones when y'all were teens!!

I graduated from high school in 2000. We would always buy fancy shoes for prom/homecoming/whatever, but they only stayed on as long as they needed to for pictures.

We didn't wear flip-flops, usually low-top converse all-stars (that matched our dresses, naturellement), but it's the same sentiment. Still, as far as the pictures go, we're all wearing appropriate footwear!

I don't think it's a "trend" as much as a comfort thing. Most dress shoes that teen girls wear aren't comfortable enough to be on your feet for hours, and it's kinda icky to go barefoot on a dance floor. I personally never did it, because I'm really short and I just wouldn't have felt put together enough in flip flops, but I know a few people who did it at my prom in 2001. Everyone's dresses are long enough that you barely see their shoes, so I don't think it really matters.

Yep.::yes:: DD went to homecoming last night too. We took pictures of all the kids at another girl's house and all the girls were wearing heels. BUT... they all took flip flops along for later. I didn't see a problem with it, all of their dresses were long and covered up their shoes anyway.

Comfort becoming acceptable at a semi-formal event sounds wonderful to me. Wish it had been that way when I was in high school.;)

My neighbor's daughter is Homecoming Queen this year. I watched her get into a limo with a gorgeous black gown, updo, manicure, tiara and ...........flip flops. It's the "in" thing.
