Could someone tell me a lot more about the observation deck at The Contemporary ?? On my December solo trip, can I easily get to the observation deck anytime just to look and take pictures? What's it really like up there ?

I wouldn't really call it an observation deck, more of a roof that's way up high. There are no benches, and there is no place to pay a quarter to look through the big magnifying glasses, there's no glamour. It is pretty cool though, you can get great pictures of WDW from above. I recommend it to any DISer.

Are you talking about the observation deck at the "California Grille"? If so, this is a great place to view magic kingdom and an awesome spot to view the fireworks. They actually pipe the music into the deck so that you can hear the music as well. It is a long strand that you get to from the "California Grill". There are railings that you lean over to take in the view (no chairs) and it is totally unobstructed. I have always thought though, that you have to have a ressie at CG to access the deck, but we just ordered drinks from the lounge and were able to access it. There is no one guarding it or anything so once you are in the restaurant area - anyone can take advantage of it.

Actually I think it is kinda scary up there. I have the death grip on my daughter whenever we are watching fireworks.:D It is easy to get to, just take the elevator to the top.

We ate at the California Grill and visited the observation deck and there were paper wasps flying around and a sign warning us of them. Needless to say, we didn't spend a lot of time up there, but the view was BEAUTIFUL!!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Take the elevator up to the 15th floor - California grill is around the corner to your right, with an observation deck right off of the restaurant, or go around the corner to the left, little hallway with rest rooms, I think, and access to the other observation deck - just a little further away from the MK. Great Viewing either way, and we used both without going to the CG for dinner - but things were very quiet at the CR the first week of March.;)

It seemed to me when we were there in Feb that if you ate at the Calif Grill you were then able to access the side of the deck closer to MK. Then there was a public access side. The public access side was still nice but im betting that the view is much better on the Grill side. The public access side is behind the grill side.

But like I said it seemed that way. I don't know what would happen if you tried to go through the Grill to get to that side of the deck.

(when I say side you have 2 walkway size ramps. the first one is the grill side then you have hotel roof like and then the public access side directly behind the grill side. I sure hope this makes sense :):) )

Maybe you'll get lucky and see a Shuttle launch! We saw Endeavor from the Contemporary's observation deck in January 1998. It was quite spectacular!

Not sure why but we were at CR over 4th of July, and elevator would not go to 15 for several hours (before fireworks) -- we had conc. room on MK side, so no big deal to us, but heard lots of frustrated visitors in the elevator. Maybe cast member had to use key if you had a res @ CG?? If you are going over a holiday, you might want to ask....
