So what if I took my OBB placeholder and held a cruise today that I am second guessing? Can I take it back to just a placeholder again--not tied to a specific cruise?

If it was only a hold and you did not actually book it, then it OUGHT to revert back to a placeholder OBB, but you should call DCL to confirm before changing anything. However, if you officially booked it, paying the deposit, it's possible you would not be able to revert to a placeholder and would need to move it to a different cruise or lose it. Rather than rely on "guesses" from people on the Dis (like ME - lol), I'd be calling DCL for the most accurate answer! ;)

I'm thinking it could cancel and end up lost. A placeholder has a real reservation number. A "hold" is simply a reservation that doesn't have the deposit recorded yet. If no deposit is received, the reservation that was on hold is cancelled. I would call and ask, and then call again to confirm. You might need to push it out to a "dummy date" with a low deposit so you don't have much more out of pocket.

Enjoy your cruise (once you decide when)!

Thanks! I was hoping the wait time would be shorter this evening, so I can call and ask. We didn't pay a deposit--just put a hold!

I was told today I had to pay the deposit for the cruise put on hold today within three days else lose my original booking?

That's what I'm wondering I guess. Seems like if you just put it on hold, it would revert back to the original placeholder but I'll ask.

I'm wondering this as well. I just sent an email to my TA to cancel the opening day booking (using OBB) because its just too high.

They let me do it once as a courtesy because I booked the Iceland cruise and paid in full. They made a point to tell me that wasn't standard practice.
They generally like you to pay the deposit. Find the cheapest 7 day cruise you can find book an inside room. Use that as your place holder. Thats what we did in the old days. It will auto cancel. It will not convert back.

Why a 7 day. Wouldn't a 3 day cruise be cheaper?
The deposit on a 7 day is 10% a 3 day 20%. It really depends. Look at some of the Galveston cruises those are usually the cheapest 7 day cruises.

if you used your placeholder booking, you already have a deposit on the cruise you are "holding". while it may not be the full deposit, it is money on the booking. DCL isn't so fast to outright cancel a booking if it has money on it. So it is not like a regular "hold" when you move a placeholder reservation. I would be surprised if they would convert it back to just a placeholder. But hopefully you have contacted DCL and gotten the correct answer to your question and can report back.
