Does Obamacare which goes into affect in Jan apply to CP's too? Is there a chance they will cut our hours to keep us under 40/week? I really need the money and I want to work as much as possible, so I'm hoping this does not affect us interns.

I'm intrigued by this and have been following any info about it closely.

So far, nothing has been said.

Doesn't mean anything either way. Just no formal announcement and I wouldn't expect anything. What I would expect is for information about work hours to be updated on their site and maybe something about benefits.

I doubt that hours would be significantly cut since they still have a business to run and would need to hire additional people to keep everything going.

Can't answer your question but Obamacare (affordable care act) limits hours to 29 hours a week before insurance is mandatory for companies with 50+ employees.

I know because my company just cut all non-fulltime employees from 4-5 days a week to 3 days a week so we wouldn't go over the 29 hour barrier.

The operative phrase for this is "Full-Time Employee." Those who participate in the College Program or Professional Internship are considered "Seasonal Employees" in the eyes of the government. This designation is part of the reason you can only extend your internship once. In addition, its also why you do not receive Union representation and why your seniority doesn't roll over if you go full time after your program ends. It's also why Seasonal Cast Members are not eligible for Health or Retirement benefits.

The Affordable Care Act [Obamacare] affects employees that are classified full-time (working more than 30 hours a week). If you see below, the definition of "Seasonal Employee" is very broad and open to interpretation.

Seasonal Cast Members are currently not eligible for Health/Retirement benefits. However, they are not constrained to a 29 hour work-week. And if you're under 26, you can remain on your parents Health Plan and avoid the $95 penalty.

5. Seasonal Employee Defined
The Affordable Care Act addresses the meaning of seasonal worker in the
context of whether an employer meets the definition of an applicable large employer.
Specifically, § 4980H(c)(2)(B) generally provides that if an employers workforce
exceeds 50 full-time employees for 120 days or fewer during a calendar year, and the
employees in excess of 50 who were employed during that period of no more than 120
days were seasonal employees, the employer would not be an applicable large
employer. Furthermore, § 4980H(c)(2)(B)(ii) provides that, for this purpose, seasonal
worker means a worker who performs labor or services on a seasonal basis, as defined
by the Secretary of Labor, including (but not limited to) workers covered by 29 CFR
500.20(s)(1) and retail workers employed exclusively during holiday seasons. The
statute does not address how the term seasonal employee might be defined for
purposes other than the determination of applicable large employer status, such as the
determination of whether a new employee of an applicable large employer is reasonably
expected to work full time for purposes of determining the amount of any assessable
payment under § 4980H. Through at least 2014, employers are permitted to use a
reasonable, good faith interpretation of the term seasonal employee for purposes of
this notice.

Ok thank you for your response. I was hoping it wouldn't affect me. So they will still be able to schedule us a lot of hours right?

Current policy is that all CP's will be scheduled a minimum of 32 hours. However, it is unknown what will happen come January 1st.
