Obama 'to reverse stem cell ban'

In which case, I could call you a liar because my Bible says I can. If it's in my Bible, it's fact, right? If you can believe in yours so strongly that you can call it fact without solid evidence, I can call you a liar without proof to back that up and it would still be true.

Note: I'm not calling you a liar, it's just a convenient way to get my point across.

And, if what's in your Bible is fact, cold hard fact, then women shouldn't be doing anything a man can do, because men are superior to us.

::yes::

and if you're on your period, a man can't touch you or he is considered to be "unclean"
and if your man gets angry with you he can beat you with a stick as long as its no bigger than his thumb.
and eating shellfish is an abomination unto the lord and you'll go to hell for it.

This is one of the MANY reasons why I hate our curent president.

There are other ways to get stem cells and they don't involve murder. I'm all for stem cell research but not embriotic stem cell research

I have very mixed emotions about this.

I couldnt imagine having an embryo on ice, and then destroying it for scientific research. To me it is life, and should have the right to be born (if it implants).

But, I'm not going any further than that!

x_x I should really step out of this thread. It just KILLS me how there are those who value cell clumps more than living, breathing human lives.

Flame me, but I agree. I'd rather focus on curing things for people who are already alive, than bringing a new life into an already over-populated world. It's we either let an embryo "die" (if I'm not mistaken, an embryo isn't even a life until something like 21 days after conception) or thousands of people die because there was no cure for their disease and treatment failed.

::yes::

exactly. and so many embryos are never used, and will never develop into anything more. how can we throw away such a good opportunity, when it can potentially save so many? it just makes sense to do the research.

There is only so long you can keep it "on ice".

I'd rather see embryos used for research than implanted in people like Octomom.

i'm so glad he's doing this. those stem cells could be used to cure muscular diseases and cancer. that would be a wonderful medical advancement!

Go Obama!

Stem cell research is important to me. It's helping to save lives! And, as someone (I'm sorry, I can't recall who) said, it might help cure juvenile diabetes.

And who knows? New cancer treatments, hell, even a CURE could come out of this! (And then maybe they'll find a cure for me, or at least a treatment)

I fully support Obama's decision. And no, I am not a Christian.

its true. there MIGHT be a possible cure for j. diabetes coming from this.

Thought it was you, Shelby :)

Two of my aunts (dad's sister and mom's sister) and my grandfather (mom's father) have diabetes. A girl in my classes has diabetes. I'm used to seeing it, and it seems to be a pain. With stem cell research, we could help cure it. Little kids shouldn't have to deal with a disease they hardly understand. All they know is that they're "different", and that they can't eat everything their friends can.

Slightly off-topic, but I've had horrendous hospital experiances. Imagine being 4, 5 years old. You know something is wrong (or why else would you be at the hospital?). You don't know what's going on, but you know it's not good. You're given medication and a foot-long needle is inserted into your back--while you are AWAKE! (Yes, it has happened to me, many times) 10 years later, you're on the computer, researching your disease. You basically read your death sentance. ("Children seldom reach adulthood")

Imagine that. Just imagine it for a moment, please.

Then, imagine what would happen if kids didn't have to go through that, didn't have to go through the pain. Didn't have to consistantly go to hospitals, doctor's. Didn't have to constantly get prodded and poked with needles.

This is the disease that I have, and many diabetes research teams say that the stem cells from umbilical cords will work just as well. I believe in life at conception, and am AGAINST embryonic stem cell research. Sure, I have to prick my fingers 10+ times a day, and change my infusion sets often, but hey, there are cure options in other places, and until they figure out how to keep my immune system from attacking my body, the stem cells wouldn't work, no matter WHERE they are from. There are lots of possible cures, they just don't work for very long because the diabetic's body just keeps attacking itself. The cure will probably come from injectable islet cells, which can possibly be grown artificially WITHOUT the use of stem cells.

Ayy-men to that, Sonya.

I've been there, it sucks, and I don't want anyone else, particularly sweet, innocent children, to suffer in pain.

Me too. My survival rate was 60-75% (that's a general though, my case was actually VERY better) but it still scared me. It still does - knowing that this thing is probably going to kill me one day.

I just keep praying for a cure - hopefully this will help.

I'll keep you in my thoughts always, hon.

The average person with FA only lives til adulthood, not even (now did THAT scare the crap outta me!)

Even if you survive to adulthood, you have a VERY high cancer rate. Basically, if I don't bleed to death/suffer major head trauma, I'll die of cancer. Lovely.
