I've enjoyed all of your posts -- I couldn't agree more with your account of law school and the character of those within its walls. This last post has me laughing because you just transported me back in time XX amount of years. I think every one who has been through law school can attest to the hand-raising know-it-all in the 1L class. In my section of my 1L class, there was bittersweet irony to the know-it-all commenters. You know the rule- "look to your left, look to your right, two of you aren't coming back" -- well, the ones not coming back after first year ended up being those hand-raisers.

Well, in my class it was interesting to see who was asking a million questions on the last day of the first semester and who suddenly caught a case of laryngitis on the day grades came out. Those kids seemed to be so wrapped up in thinking about obscurities or trying to be "novel" that they completely screwed up their exams. The professors want you to answer the question asked, not philosophize about the question. That escaped a number of these kids. Once they figured out that their gunnerish qualities were not getting them anywhere, most of them shut up. The ones who didn't figure this out were the ones who were still obsessively raising their hands on the last day of class when I was a 3L.
