Having read many threads recently about price/rudeness/experiences etc at dlp, I thought I'd share our experience of our recent trip to Alton Towers. (Mod's if you don't think this is appropriate please accept my apologies and delete)

Now, I am more than aware that you cannot compare the two - Disney is Disney and nothing will come close to that in my opinion :lovestruc - but for a couple of days away with the family the price, facilities and service can be compared.

The park:
AT is all about the rides. Not much to do if you don't want to ride anything. This is a huge down for me. I like to wander and sit and relax during the day. With the exception of the beautiful gardens, there isn't much to see. The age differences with our kids really worked here - eldest two went off and did the thrill rides, whilst dh, ds and myself took our time round the smaller things. Luckily it didn't rain at all - if it had, it would have been a complete washout - only 1 indoor ride and a show to see (which we didn't bother with).

They had some pumpkin heads around, obviously making an effort for Halloween (nothing like last year in dlp though).

Too many arcade places for me and fairground type stalls to try and win massive dogs :confused3

Huge distances between 'lands'. Sky ride was good for getting about - but if you didn't use this the hills were really quite steep. So not easy to get from one bit to the other quickly

Queues:
There were none at all. Just about every ride was walk on which was great. We got to do everything we wanted a few times over. A couple of the larger rides had waits of only about 10 or 15 mins.

We didn't buy much in the park, a toy sword for DS £3.00 and a photo of one of the rides £8.00.

Food:
Lunch at BK in the park was £28.00 - would only have cost us about £17.00 at a local BK. We didn't buy much else, but I did see vending machines with bottles of coke etc for £1.70 each.

The Hotel:
Splash Landings Hotel was nice enough - family room for 6 which is real plus for us. Good facilities in the room, kettle, tea/coffee, hairdryer, iron/ironing board, fan. Bathroom very small though and not enough towels for us all. Some evening entertainment for the kids and a small area for kids to draw/play lego etc beside the bar. We didn't make use of the waterpark this time, but have been before and it is nice. There is an extra charge for this, I was quoted £12.50 per ad and £9.00 per child which is a corporate rate.

Shops in our hotel and adjoining hotel selling usual sweets/small toys etc. I did notice kids hooded tops, unbranded for only £8.00 which I thought was very reasonable if you were stuck.

Breakfast was normal buffet style. DH had a horrible experience at breakfast here, not with a staff member, but another guest who told him to **** *** because he got a plate before her in the queue!! I have never come across this anywhere before. The staff member who overheard this commented to dh and said he gets spoken to like that all the time :scared1:

The hotel restaurant had a buffet style evening meal available, £19.95 per adult, £14.95 for 7-14yr olds and £5.95 for under 7's.

I found the reception staff a bit lax and had to interrupt a conversation to get served. The receptionist rattled through everything and didn't tell me when check out was, what the early morning opening included or where to get breakfast. I worked these things out myself though, no big deal - but service in general from the hotel staff was only just sufficient.

Here's what it cost us:
First night we stayed in a hotel in Stoke - family room for 5 people was £144 including breakfast. Room was large and very nicely done.

Evening meal in local pizza hut £46.00

Second day we travelled to AT - stayed in Splash Landings Hotel. I got a good corporate deal, £100.00 for family room for 5 people including breakfast. I have since checked the website and this should have been £265.00!! I would never have paid that for what we had.

2 day tickets for us all £125.00

Lunch in park, £28.00

We went back into Stoke for our evening meal £58.00.

Filled the car with diesel before we left home £95.00

Total cost for 2 days, £596, not including lunch on the way down or back up the road at services or my shopping bill for kids in Stoke shopping centre!!

We did enjoy ourselves, but really with expenses in total close to £700 for 2 nights and some ok rides, we could have gone to DLP and enjoyed much more 'magic'. I suppose the moral is that you get what you pay for and I'd happily pay a bit more to experience Disney.

I'm having a bit of a do with a family member going on and on about the cost to go to Disney and how much food is etc!!

I did think the other day, if I had booked Alton towers for 3 nights, 4 days in park then the cost would be stupid! Infact I might print the quote out and leaving it laying around! I bet she wouldn't think twice about a trip to Alton towers!

I'm really looking forward to going to dlp now!

I like Alton Towers but it's only worth a day trip. It's probably the best park in Europe for roller coasters. It does lack the quality of Disney and it doesn't offer too much for young children.

I do like the Pizza Buffet there. It's £9 for all you can eat pizza, pasta and soft drinks. Much better value and quality than the Pizza buffet in Disney.

Totally agree with you , it drives me daft people complaining about the cost of dlp wheb it's totally comparable to other day's out. Just thinking about summer hols we always go to the seaside, have lost count of the amount of poor quality fish n chips we've had at nearly £9 each for sea front places. For me you get what you pay for and you pay how much you choose, nice holidays/days out are not an entitlement they're a luxury. Even looking back to being a kid I can remember my dad complaining on every trip somewhere about it being a rip off so it's nothing new!

I don't think DLP is expensive, if you book right and get the best deal, especially out of term time, in comparison to places like Alton Towers. However, in comparison with a WDW holiday then yes, it can be very expensive when you compare the price of a few days at DLP with 2 weeks at WDW!

I am very happy with the £500 we are paying for our 2 day trip, incl flights, hotel, park tickets (for 3 days but can only use 2) meals and birthday cake!

I really want to go to thorpe park, alton towers etc but I always think oh but the money could go towards another Disney trip lol!

Hi we live about 10 minutes away from Alton Towers and we very rarely visit which is a shame cus I'm sure if I lived that close to dlp we would be there all the time :) I do find it a liitle expensive and there isnt as much to do for the little ones, however we love splash landing hotel, we have our works christmas party there, but for me dlp outshines towers every time :):)

This has been interesting to read, Julie, as I haven't been to Alton Towers for more than 23 years!! I do remember the beautiful gardens though.

We always came up with the same thought too. Over the last couple of years my DDs have gone to Thorpe Park with their friends and they always come home comparing it to Disney even though they know they shouldn't.

I've always wondered how much it was to stay at splash landings, we haven't been to AT for about 12 years so I bet it's changed loads.

We're lucky enough to live 15 minutes from Legoland Windsor and have been a few times this year. We went yesterday (me & dd who is 2) as they do a parent & pre-schooler ticket for £15 mid-week during term time. But whilst we were there I spent £10 on my lunch (chicken & jacket pot with drink) & £4.75 for kids half jacket with tuna, drink & apple. Then we stopped for coffee & donuts which came to £5.50. Before we left we got some dinner for dd as the traffic out of LL can be terrible. So another kids meal of fish finger, chips & peas with drink & an apple and a drink for me came to £7.50. So a cheap day out would have been a lot cheaper if we'd have taken a picnic. No queues for any of the rides though & dd can go on most rides now she is 90cm.

Just edited to say that we had lunch in the castle. The atmosphere is fab & they have sound effects as if you're in a real medieval castle & banquet music. BUT the staff uniform is generic throughout the park so all this fab atmosphere to make you think you're actually in a castle could be made better by a bit of staff uniform theming.

I agree that AT is really just a day trip - but we're over 4 hours away so if we tried it all in one day we'd be exhausted which is why we usually stay over.

If we lived in central England we'd probably get Merlin passes and make use of all their parks - but when travel/hotels are factored in it does get expensive.

For what we paid in total to AT we could probably have got a good deal on accommodation/tickets to dlp - it's just the travel part that gets us every time.

It won't stop been checking prices all the time though......just trying to decide when to go next year, hopefully to catch some of the 20th anniversary celebrations :goodvibes

It's strange when we compare other parks to Disney, for me the only one's that compare are the Universal and Sea World one's in Florida.

We live around a 10 minute drive from Blackpool Pleasure Beach, but haven't been there since Joshua was a young child, just doesn't do anything for us at all.

Went to Alton Towers once, agree it's all about the rides.

Problem is once you go to the Disney parks nothing comes close to matching.

I agree, nothing comes close. I really just wanted to highlight that dlp with the right deal is not as expensive as it first appears, compared to the alternatives and given the variety and magic that Disney offers.

To be honest whenever to go to a theme park it's always an obvious thing to do in comparing, at least when you go to DLRP the parks compare well with WDW.

Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, this is where you people are going wrong. I live in Cornwall and know that the UK's best theme parks, no I best correct myself the World's best theme parks are here in Cornwall. Cornwall's Crealy and Flambards are way better than DLRP and DisneyWorld, the rides are better, the food etc.

I think you can't help but compare disney parks to anything else you visit.

We went to Drayton manor in the summer, I was worried we wouldn't like it but we had a good day. Especially liked the Thomas land, our DS is 4 and he loved it. We were on holiday in the midlands, it was a cheap day out as DS was under 4 and we used tesco vouchers for our entry.

Hoping to visit Legoland in the summer but it's a fair distance for us.

We went there once when the Skyride wasn't working. Nearly died of exhaustion! lol

As for the queues, we've always been height of season which means a 3-4 hour wait for rides!

Fantastic rides (better than DLP) but just not the same!

In fact we haven't been for about 3 years as there is just no theatre!!

DLP for us ANYDAY

I was lucky and managed to get the facebook offers in January for Alton towers premium passes at £49.00 each for the year.

We tend to go everyother month for a long weekend and take a packup with us to eat whilst we are going round.

I think that you can't compare it to disney as there is not a lot for my 2 little ones to do, especially as this in June this year they changed the height restrictions for 2 of the rides that they could go on in March.

If we go for 2 days we stay in the premier inn just on the outskirts of Derby that costs us £133, then petrol which is currently £70, then take around £50 a day for spending and to buy tea's.

I usually find that for the small children's rides it is no more than around 10 minutes wait (exception being charlie and the chocolate factory), but for the bigger rides it depends when you go, they do have an early ride time for 1 hour for hotel guests, passholders and those that have booked tickets off the internet, this is good as some of the bigger rides you can walk on and on and on, but when the park opens some of the rides can be in excess of 80 minutes.

I have found though that this year it has given me my theme park fix until I can book for Disney next year.
