o/t anyone have hurricane evac plans?

It's almost that time
We usually head to my DH's nanny's but I'm not sure this year. She lives North of Houston and the traffic to and from is terrible. Toying with the idea of Atlanta What about you ???

I'm simply praying we don't have any. I live in Daytona and survived the three that came through in 2004. Don't want a repeat of that!! No thanks!

I hear you We have been hit pretty hard here. I really hope we don't get any for a while. My plans hmmm depending on the direction how many storms are out there it all depends. You see most everyone from here go North but if it looks good down south thats were I will go!! I have always stayed. But these storms do seem to be getting bigger and badder! I've heard that WDW is a good choice!

Of the big one's in South Florida, I've been through Andrew and Wilma (Katrina the same year but it did nothing in south Florida compared to Wilma). Andrew was much worse overall, but Wilma hit closer to home and we were without power/water/anything for over 3 weeks.

Last year was a blessing after the year before, not a single hurricane, not even close really! Here's to hoping we have another season like that.

As for evacuation, since we just just bought a new house a lot closer to the beach/ocean (only a few minutes away), it's something we would have to consider now because of storm surge and the like, plus the fact that the wind will be stronger. We also have a wood frame house, it's a beauty but it's in that kind of neighborhood (we're one of the only neighborhoods in all of Delray Beach that has does not use city water or sewer, all well/septic tank, about 30 houses in all). Plus we have tons of large oak trees on our property, and I would worry about them as well.

Chances are, unless it's going to be a smash direct hit and a big one, I would probably stay at the house and send the wife to be with her mom. If it's going to be a big one, I would probably evacuate in the most obvious direction, being whichever one the storm isn't going...lol.

We use our travel trailer when we evacuate. It will hold enough important papers, photo albums, clothes, etc. to keep from being totally wiped out. Being in the camper, we always make sure that we are going to be outside of the tropical storm force winds for obvious reasons. One suggestion would be Casino RV parks. The sights are usually level with full hookups.

We had Disney reservations for the following week. After the storm hit, we realized that we couldn't go home for a while. The CM I called to cancel my reservation was so nice. She asked me if my house was okay and was very sincerely upset when I said that we had no idea at that point. When we did get home, there was no power or sewer and no 911 service (police said everyone was on their own). DH stayed to cleanup and get back to work and MIL and I took the kids to Disney for the week after we should have been there. The room discount rate we'd had was expired, but they were nice enough to let us have it due to the storm. If a storm threatens this September, we will evacuate in a better direction! DD has already announced that she only wants to evacuate to WDW.

I wouldn't mind evacuating to Disney but with all the bridge issues after Katrina I'm alittle nervous about not being able to get back home. But, I guess if we're in WDW that won't be a problem..lol

We stayed for Katrina won't do that again! The weather wasn’t so bad but the no electricity / a/c had us at each others throats. After 10 days we decided to head to a hotel and 2 days later we had power ?? We bought the camper right after so we wouldn't have to worry about what to do with the pooch's or not being able to get ressies. Hopefully the fuel prices will go down some so we won't go broke if we do have to leave

I'm going to do alittle research and have a few campground possibilities with evacuating in different directions so if we have to make a last minute decision I'll at least have a few places in mind. My DH works for a chemical plant and they usually wait until the last minute to get the hurricane team called in (another reason we stayed for Katrina). By the time we get on the road everyone else has decided to too!

Hope all ended up with for your family and your home. We ended up with family members for almost a year but at least we had a home to offer.

Living in B.R. we stay for everything, but if it did look like one was going to hit B.R. hard I will head to Atlanta area.. just north in Paulina County to stay with family. My dh also works for a big chem. plant and he has to stay , there is only one way they will shut down and if that happens we all better be out of South Louisiana.
I just told DH its getting that time to round up the flashlights again and hit the stores for batteries and check on our candle supply.
Im saying prayers it will be a calm season like last yr!

I just hope nothing comes our way. We had two direct hits (Jeane and Frances) and Wilma. I just got the house back in shape! It is very hard to evacuate from FL when the hurricanes are on their way...you have to leave VERY early. We have the coach full of diesel during the hurricane seasons. That is in case of if we stay or go. If we go, we have enough to get us out of the state without refueling. If we stay, we have enough for air conditioning when the power goes out. We had 28 days of no electricity with the two storms and 4 days with Wilma. It just gets too muggy and sticky after the storms not to have air conditioning! We usually won't leave unless it is a mid to high 4 or 5. I figure if we can stand two 3's and a small 4, then why go? (Yeah, I know, I am not sane, but native Floridians usually have a lack of sanity, speaking for myself of course!)

We were at Fort Wilderness in 2004 during hurricane Charlie, we were notified in plenty of time that we were being evacuated to The Port Orleans hotel. Everything went smoothly, Charlie came right through Orlando, we were safe in our room, and the next day Disney was opened for business. Campground had alot of tree damage and we were able to complete our stay in the hotel for no additional charge.

During Katrina we evacuted to North Mississippi for a week then chose to return check on our house & belongings. Police let us in but we had to leave after taking a few more things. Luckily house had minor damage. That night we slept in the car in a truck stop--tell DDs that they'll be able to tell their children about that night.
That year we had left Louisiana right before Cindy hit & then we were at WDW for Dennis. We had actually been going towards the Keys but stayed at Disney. Then came home to face Katrina. What a year!
We'll probably try to go to friends in Texas but the DDs just want to go to Disney!

I live about 20 minutes from Disney, and actually have reservations on property for 17 days during the peak of hurricane season. I live about as central as you can get between the Gulf and Atlantic, and we have a basement with no windows to ride out a storm in. Obviously, we're all hoping that if any storms come, they are of the mild variety (we could use the rain, but not the wind damage), but I don't plan on leaving. The worst thing would be to leave a relatively safe house and get stuck out on the highway, either because there's too much traffic or not enough gasoline. I have relatives on either coast who usually evacuate to our house if necessary, so we plan ahead for extra people.

Do they always evacuate to other resort rooms? I remember them evacuating FW to the CR convention center one year when we were staying at WL.

I was in Daytona for biketoberfest in Oct when hurricane Wilma was coming, I live in Fort Lauderdale we came home to get pounded by it!!! We got crushed

Well the reports I have seen are calling for this season to be very very bad 5-7 severe storms which is up from the usual 3 severe and so on. I hope it isn't that bad for everyone but man I don't like the looks of these early predictions.

I know im a tad freaked out, but hopefully it will be a quiet season like last yr. I need to get my flashlights back together and some extra batteries, so if one comes I dont have to be on in a frenzy trying to get things together. I bought my house from my MIL after Katrina and she was without power for almost two weeks for Katrina and same with Andrew yrs before. I also need to build up my candle supply again!
