o FL from NY? Long distance moving advice?

We've made the move from Ca to WA, WA to MI, MI to MD, and MD to WA (all within the last 6 years :headache:...nope not military...)

Each time we have rented a Uhaul and done it ourselves. Two moves back we learned to hire day or movers to help load and unload the truck and it was SOOOO worth it! If you do plan to load yourself consider purchasing forearm forklists, the really do work :thumbsup2.

Consider starting to purge things you don't need now. Why wait? Yard sales, goodwill, all will do the trick.

Decluttering will help with the appraisal, showing of the home, and will help you with preparing for sale. If you can't part with items but want them out for showing purposes, consider renting a small storage unit until the sale is over.

Consider sprucing up the yard, floral, mulch, reseeding lawn, etc. A nice yard where a family can envision their kids playing with help with the sale.

Cabinets, if they appear outdated consider replacing the doors or doorknobs.

Carpet, does it need a good cleaning or an entire replacing?

Paint, would neutral colors help with the sale? Or are there places to touch up. What does the outside look like? Is it in good shape or does it need a new coat of paint?

I tried on the community board and got no help, so let's try here!

My husband and I are planning on moving from Buffalo, NY to the Orlando area sometime between 2013 and 2016. Luckily he can work from home and I will hopefully soon have a job that I can transfer to that area. We bought and moved into a house 15 minutes away from where we grew up so I was hoping to get some insight on how to do a long distance move.

Currently we are working on decluttering the house and the plan is to have a real estate agent come in next spring to help guide us through what we need to do to sell our house the year after. A lot of our furniture is hand-me-downs, so we will be able to leave a lot of it behind. The plan would be to put our house up for sale, then put in for a transfer if it sells, then find a house and move. It seems a little stressful that all of that has to happen so quickly, but that is how it is I guess ;)

We're really excited about the adventure, and have done a lot of homework and visited a few areas we are interested in and have plans to visit a few more times this year, but you can never be too careful! What did you wish you knew before you moved that would have made everything easier? What did you learn in the process? What are your best moving tips?

Thank you all so much!

Erica

Although it has been several years since we moved from Philly to South FL I do recall my mom spending every Saturday for an entire summer taking all of our unwanted items that were in relatively good shape to a flea market that she paid a very minimal amount to participate in. I know she sold a lot of stuff there and it helped clean out our house which contained almost 30 yrs of "stuff".;) Of course, now's there the internet but in some ways this seemed to be easier than dealing with shipping (like on Ebay) although Craigs List may be a good way to go to get rid of the larger items.

I also remember her packing boxes for several months which included a lot of the house decor (paintings, etc), things that you don't need to use everyday. Just made it easier to pack a box a day and she numbered all of her boxes and kept a notebook of what was in each box as she back them. (I've done that too for my smaller moves over the years-what a great help that is!)

She sold ALL of our furniture and we bought all new when we arrived. (that was done through classified ads in our neighborhood paper)

There are so many more things available today though that can make your move even easier. Also try to check out the local chamber of commerce to the area you plan to move to. They can give you all kinds of info on the area to help you become more familiar.

Good luck, it'll be here before you know it!:goodvibes
