I tried emailing Pleasant Activities (the company that Aulani uses for this tour) to get more detail, but the email bounced back. Maybe a temporary glitch, but as a Plan B, I thought I would ask here instead.

1.) I assume the +$500 pp cost includes airfare to the Big Island and back, yes?
2.) What time does the tour start?
3.) Do you get picked up at Aulani, or is it up to you to make your way to HNL for the puddle jump?
4.) Does someone from the tour company meet you when you arrive in HNL?
5.) How much hiking is involved, in terms of time, distance and difficulty? I ask because I want to make sure my 7-y.o. is up to the task.
6.) For those with first-hand knowledge, was the tour worth it? Better to go with a different tour company? Or skip altogether?

Thank you!

In general, a good tour company will put the entire itenerary and what the price includes on their website.

Fair enough. But since this is the 3rd-party company that Disney has contracted with, I figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Wow, these people work with Disney? I'm surprised that they don't seem to have their stuff more together...

Anyway, you have a good point about the company picking you up in Kapolei. Most of the day trip tour companies only pick-up in Waikiki. From Kapolei there no winning situation. Pay for a rental, drive your car there, and pay for airport parking OR take an expensive cab to and from the resort.

I did a google search and found this:

So if you're paying $500 per person, that's over $350 for your flights to the Big Island. I would be inclined to book this myself personally, not through the resort. Also, flying to the Big Island isn't a puddle jumper; it will be a larger plane if you take an airline like Hawaiian Air.

I'm actually going over to the Big Island for a few days from Oahu this summer, booking myself. The island is, well, big, LOL, and I want to see a family friend living in Kailua-Kona then driving over to stay a couple nights in Volcanoes Nat'l Park. To just go for one day would be way too long of a day to me! It's just me and DD, leaving DS and DH on Oahu, as they have no interest in touring/hiking. It's easy enough to plan it myself (done it before) to do the lava tube short hike, do the visitor center at the park & hike the caldera.

Thanks. Yeah, I think that is the same description as on the Aulani site. But I indeed see your point about the jacked-up airfare.

I will check out the link. Again, thanks!

We were considering doing a day trip to the Big Island too, but ultimately decided to just add a couple of days to the end of our trip. I want to see the volcano at night. We're staying at the hotel in Volcanoes National Park.

A day trip to the Big Island would be a LONG day. You would spend a lot of travel time. There is no guarantee you will see a lava flow, but the park is awesome for hiking around. Bring warm clothes; it's cold there! We wore jeans and sweat shirts.

I just got back from a trip yesterday. We spent our first 2 nights at Volcanoes National Park and then went to Oahu from there. That worked well for us because we aren't big on tour groups and wanted flexibility. We also looked at costs and it was cheaper to do it this way, especially considering the price per night at Aulani there was no way I wanted to spend a full day away while paying for a room. It was easy to get a rent car in Hilo and tour the park ourselves. We stayed in the park at Volcano House and had a great time.

Would love to hear your "touring plan" for the park....favorites, mehs, best lunch options, etc. Did you get to see lava? Can't WAIT to see it for myself!!

I have started thinking about DIY as well. We don't like tour groups, generally, either.

I just started a separate thread with a mini trip report from my time there last week. Hope it's helpful!

ON our last trip, we flew into Hilo, rented a car, and stayed 2 nights before moving to Aulani. We found all this cost less than the cost for a day trip for 3 from Aulani plus we got to see so much more and not feel rushed (plus flying into Hilo was less expensive than HNL on our date). Inter-island flights on Hawaiian are pretty cheap (~$70 each one way).

Hi- heading to Aulani in Sept, and am considering a day trip over to the big island to do the volcano tour. Is this too much to do in one day?
is this unrealistic? I am flying from NY, and this is most likely the only time I will be in Hawaii... but I don't want to overdo it, and come home so exhausted and wiped out that I can't remember what I saw!
All I really want to see on the big island is Volcano Nat'l park. and hopefully lava flow... but I understand that may not happen.. so I am torn as to what to do.. advice?

Depending on how many people in your party, we found it cheaper to just fly to Hilo first, spend a day at Volcano National Park, then book a one way ticket on Hawaiian airlines to Oahu. One night in a hotel, rental car, and the island hop airfare was less than the cost for 3 of us to book the day long excursion from Aulani. There are guided tours of the park or you can visit on your own. A great way to see the lava flow is an evening boat tour because you can see it flowing down to the ocean. However, there is no guarantee it will be flowing on any given day.

We just got back from spending a week at Aulani followed by three days/two nights on the Big Island. We flew from the East Coast to Honolulu, purchased one way airfare to Hilo, and then flew from Hilo back home. We stayed at the Volcano House right in the volcano park. It is super easy to rent a car and find the park. The lava flow differs from day to day, and we definitely noticed this during our stay. When we arrived on Saturday, we were able to catch glimpses of "orange" during the day from the observation point in the park, and even more that night. The next day - not so much, although the glow was still there at night, just not as good as the first day. I would definitely recommend a full day in the park, as well as seeing the crater at night. Seeing the crater at night is incredible.

There are a few different options for seeing the lava flow into the ocean. You can do a helicopter or boat tour. We were told that the boat tour costs $199 per person, so we passed on that. By land, there are two access points - one within the park and another through county land. Access through the park is an approx. 11 mile hike on partly paved, partly lava rock (uneven) terrain. Access through the county is an approx. 4 mile hike (or you can rent a bike for $20 per person) on a lightly graveled path. It is also an approx. one hour drive to get to this point, but it is very easy to drive. My 8 year old isn't good with a bike, so we chose to hike the 4 miles. It was also very windy when we were there, and we heard some people on bikes complain that it was difficult conditions for biking. Anyway, halfway through the hike, you reach a barrier which designates the line between the county and national park lands. You just keep hiking or biking through this barrier until you reach the path through the hardened lava that the park has designated as an observation point. I also want to mention that we noticed taxis and vans from the bike rental place driving up to the barrier and dropping people off. When we reached the barrier, one of the van drivers stopped us and told us she could take us back down for $20. We ended up taking advantage of this when we were done because our kids were spent from a full day hiking in the park followed by this hike. I heard another family say that they were charged way more to do the round trip drive so just something to be aware of...

As for the actual lava flow into the ocean, it looks like a giant plume of steam from the observation point, but we were able to zoom in for a pretty good view through our camera lens. Again, I'm sure this could be different depending on when you go. Also, note that the county access is only from 3pm to 9pm. And as with everything else, all of this could change by the time you go!

In addition to the park, we also drove out to the black sand beach (20 mins from park) where we saw a sea turtle on the beach. We drove to Hilo as well to see the waterfall at Akaka Falls park, and we went to the botanical garden.

The volcano park does get cold as well, especially at night. I would recommend taking sweatshirts.

I hope that helps! I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about our experience at the park or on the island.

Thanks so much for the info. I am still undecided if I should take a day trip to the Big island or not- there is a lot I want to do, plus I would like to fit in some relax time. Do you have any fell for if it is necessary to book the air months in advance or do you think a week or so before is enough time?
thanks.
