We are headed to New York City in a few weeks and we need some recommendations of good places to eat. My husbands a big steak eater, we would also like to try a couple of the local popular places that are not outrageously priced. We dont tend to like places with "pretty food", ya know tiny portions, big prices. Please Help me out!

thanks in advance

Where in NYC are you staying? I could recommend a few but need to know where your hotel is.

I would not miss eating in Little Italy! I am an italian food lover, though, so if u don't like it then u shouldn't go there. We also like to eat on the go while there, so any little deli's and kosher hotdog vendors, as well as pizza places are great for us!

When we go to the City (when you live on Long Island, you just say you are going into the City) LOL.

Anyway, we always stop at JOHN'S PIZZERIA. It is wonderful! It is in the Theatre District, looks absolutely normal from the outside, but when you go in, you find out that it was an old cathedral with stained glass windows etc..

They have great food, and low prices! Here is a link to a review:

One of our favorites is Becco. It's in the theatre district so it is pretty popular for pre-show dinners. They have amazing food and (my personal favorite) a prixe fixe pasta menu. :cloud9: They also have a great $25 bottle wine list. You definitely won't leave hungry and, if you go on Saturday, you can order their burrata appetizer. To die for!!

Here's a link to the website

I also like Il Campanello on 31st Street, off of 7th Avenue. Not far from Madison Square Garden.

It is Italian, very nice atmosphere, large ceilings, good food!

Here is a link to a little info, and some pictures:

Do NOT miss Tony Danapolis its in the theater district. I love it; its my fav. They have family style servings pretty, plentiful and GOOOOOOD! I love the pizzeria another poster suggested also Johns is excellent its been on the food channel yummy!

I am a die hard Planet Hollywood fan, we always eat there. The Hard Rock here is really cool, as well since they moved; both are located in Times Square. ESPN Zone is another one of my faves, on 42nd and Broadway. If you like Italian, check out Federico's, it's in the 50's b/t 7th & 8th, right next door to the Gershwin Theatre & Circle in the Square. It's an adorable Italian place with awesome food. It's a tiny bit pricey, but on weeknights they have price fix theatre menus (as most theatre district restaurants do) which include everything pretty much except for drinks. You definitely need a reservation for there, though, which you can make online. I suggest looking on citysearch.com, they are a great source of information for dining.

Also, Alfredo's (yes, the same Alfredo's that's in Epcot!) is located right across the street from Rockafellar Center. I suggest trying it, although it is very different from the one in Epcot.

Why go to a chain restaurant (with not very good food) when visiting NYC, one of the food capitals of the world? I would think a local restaurant would be a lot more interesting.

Gallaghers steak house is suppose to be great. Also, I know that Ruth's Chris is a chain (kind of), but I get the best meal there all the time!

Carmines (Theater district)
200 West 44th Street, (Between 7th & 8th Avenues)

Huge portions, excellent food!

Ellens Stardust Diner
1650 Broadway

okay food, but the waiters and waitresses sing Broadway tunes as they serve, so much fun!

We go to NYC two or three times a year for the theater and I highly recommend John's Pizza. We always have great food, good to great service and even when it has been super busy,we usually don't have to wait too long for a party of two.

Some other faves are Kyma-Greek food at 46th and 8th
La Bonne Soup 48 W. 55th (between 5th and 6th)
Becco 355 W. 46th (between 8 and 9th)
Gray's Papaya-good cheap hot dogs with a drink- we go to the one at 72nd and Broadway
Fresco by Scotto- expensive but excellent Italian food- not the run of the mill stuff
Ferrara- 195 Grand in Little Italy for pastries and coffee

I tend to avoid the chain restaurants like Hard Rock, ESPN, Olive Garden, because you can get that stuff anywhere.

For steak, I can't recommend an inexpensive place, but we do like Smith and Wollensky's and Ben Benson's. Del Frisco's on 6th Avenue is good but we have one of those here in Fort Worth.

Have a great trip and let me know if I can help. I'm currently planning our December trip and am making a list of new places to try.

We are huge Carmine's fans. We eat there every time we go into the city. I agree, the portions are made to share and the food is excellent. They give you a nice bread selection as well. The prices are good for the city. They do a website with the menu, but you have to call to make a reservations.

We always have to go to Jackson Hole Burgers- there are several locations throughout the city- HUGE, yummy burgers, along with many other dishes-(breakfast foods, homemade soups, etc.) and great prices- not a fancy schmancy place- but good eats!

I work a couple of blocks from your hotel!

I second the poster who said Fresco - it's on 52 between Park and Madison, and you always have a chance of running into Rosanna Scotto (a well-known NY newscaster) since her family owns the place. If you don't want to splurge for a dinner, right next door is Fresco on the Go, which is a lunch place with outstanding food also owned by the family. I highly recommend the Mediterranean Salad - I get it for lunch every day! :goodvibes

Other great restaurants within walking distance - Tao, The Four Seasons, Brasserie, 21, anything on Columbus Circle. Ask for the addresses at your hotel - they'll have them.

If you'll have kids with you (or even if you don't!) you have to go to Dylan's Candy Bar on 60th and Third Avenue - it's a two story candy store with pretty much every candy ever made, from vintage stuff you thought didn't exist any more to new artisan chocolates.

Have fun!

A few of our favorites are the Noho Star (corner of Lafayette & Bleeker down by NYU); take the 6 train to Bleeker and go upstairs. http://www.nohostar.com/

Sarabeth's right across from Central Park (40 Central Park South (between 5th and 6th Aves) New York, N.Y. 10019-1633) www.sarabethscps.com

We usually walk up 5th Avenue (get in some great window shopping and TDS) before lunch. Sarabeth's has the best tomato soup!!

Cafe Mozart (154 West 70th Street, between Broadway & Central Park). We went to dinner here after a show at Lincoln Center, and it was wonderful!! It's a small, local place- and not a tourist trap. http://cafemozart.com/Default.aspx

Have fun! And if you can- see Sweeney Todd before it closes on Sept. 3! It was fantastic!!!!!!!
