NYC Public Schools closed tomorrow

A friend told me he was talking to a mailman earlier. He was warned: Don't expect any packages tomorrow, if it turns into a major snow day. (Unless they are Express deliveries.) Oh, USPS will deliver something, (one or two letters within a business or along the street,) to make it look like they put out the effort, but major deliveries, not very likely.

Yup, I can't remember ever having a snow day.

I don't either. I lived in Flatbush and went to Tilden HS when we had a big snowstorm i think in april 1978 and the mayor back then said as long as the city buses were running, schools would be open. We had to climb over the 4 foot mounds of plowed snow by the curb just to get on the bus.

OK, but what about garbage pickup? I guess I have to call 311 for that. Tonight is my garbage night.

I thought the fronts of the garbage trucks are fitted with the snow plow shovels?

Yes, but my husband says they'll be on plow duty so no pickup.

I'm thinking that too. But, there's nothing worse than the streets topped up with garbage because they missed a pick up day. The snow isn't expected for some few hours and if it lasts a few days so they can't get in to pick up, that would cause quite a nightmare for them. I'd think they would try to get in to puck up as much as they can before they have to switch to snow removal duty.

woooo they closed Stony Brook!! Snow day for the college kids too!

DH works in the HSC library and was called this morning that it's closed as well

The Superintendent just made the call - we are CLOSED! He must have been out to dinner tonight and it took him a while to make that call. Either way the kids are crazy happy! Me too, I get to sleep in late.

I checked around 8:30 last night and WALK had our district and Pat-Med listed. DS goes to a private school that is in the Pat-Med district and it wasn't on the list yet. After a few minutes I refreshed the page and lo and behold, his school was on it. Usually when Pat-Med closes, DS's school does as well.
