NYC Public Schools closed tomorrow

My junior year in high school we got a new superintendent, from Texas. The weather forecasters were predicting a major storm to hit the next day so they called off school so we wouldn't be in school when it hit. Well, as everyone in MN knows those storm track can vary widely and we ended up not even getting a single flake of snow :lmao:. Unfortunately he was so timid from the last storm that he didn't call off school for the next one and it was BAD. Only a couple buses actually made it to school, there were maybe 100 kids there at all. A couple buses ended up in minor accidents that day.

I would HATE to be the one to make that decision though. In our old district the superintendent and the bus company owner would drive around the area to see how bad things were in reality before they would call school off or not.

WALK already has a list of school closings and it's a fairly large list. DS's school isn't on the list - yet.

I'm watching News 12 LOTS of School closings...not us either. Please don't make us wait till the AM to announce it!:headache:

My husband who went to NYC public school (Hunter) said the only time they may have had a snow day was perhaps the blizzard of 78. They only cancelled if the MTA busses were cancelled. I grew up in NH with a superintendant who didn't believe in snow days so I think my first was in high school when we got a new superintendent and a big snow prediction then we never got the snow. DD's principal was saying a problem with the MCAS one year was kids were asked to write about a snow day and none of them knew what that was like since they never had one. My friend and I were joking that she moved from MA to NC for nicer weather and her dd gets more bad weather days there.

The best snow days are when school gets canceled the night before. I bet those kids did cheer! :thumbsup2

Automated call came we're closed tomorrow. My pre-school closed at the end of the afternoon session until Thursday!:cool1:

My kids were told at dismissal that school is closed tomorrow. I just got the automated call and of course they had to remind us that now they will have school the Friday before memorial day:mad: Why can't they build in 1 snow day? So annoying!

 to all you Long Islanders who wanted a snow day tomorrow!

We just got a phone call that our school is closed here in Nassau County. :cool1:

I doubt if I'm going in. The LIRR were giving out warnings on the way home.

All these warning and closings remind me of about 8 years ago.
They forcasting a huge storm starting in the morning. The schools closed the night before, we stayed home because we could get in to work but the chances of getting home were slim.

The next day- it just rained all day. :rotfl:

My three children go to elementary school in New York City and I stopped into the school to leave something off. One of the teachers told me that all the kids already knew that the mayor had closed the public schools and the whole building was cheering when they made the announcement. I am sure all the kids are thrilled :yay::yay::yay:.

The teachers are too ;)
I teach in NJ and we found out before dismissal today that we will be closed tomorrow. The kids and teachers were very happy to say the least. This is the first time in my 10 years teaching that we knew the day before. They told us the automated phone system would call if we are closed on Thursday. We have 3 snow days and tomorrow will be our first one.

If the storm should move, could they reverse the decision and open schools?? I'm sorry, but that would be soooo funny. All these kids all excite about a snow day and then it rains and they have to go to school!!!:lmao:

Wow.

Here in MN, it's rare to call a snow day early.

I can imagine how happy all the NYC kids are.

herc.

WALK already has a very, very long list. It was just updated a few minutes ago. DS's school is closed and of course, he is :yay:  and :woohoo:

The Superintendent just made the call - we are CLOSED! He must have been out to dinner tonight and it took him a while to make that call. Either way the kids are crazy happy! Me too, I get to sleep in late.:woohoo:

Enjoy your sleep in day. :)

The school I teach at in NJ is closed too! We got the call about 2 hours ago--im so glad they called it tonight

I was watching News12 at 9 PM--that list of school closings is really long. I know my local district is closed (no kids here), and my nieces school in Suffolk is closed too. It seems it would probably be easier if they listed the schools that were open. I know I saw Hofstra & Molloy were closed too. When I went to Adelphi (class of 1983), they never closed for snow!

I think the mayor & the school districts did the right thing--this storm is going to be messy at the very least & a near blizzard at the most. I think I'll be taking a PTO tomorrow--I know the LIRR has announced that they will suspend service if the snow is more than 10 inches. I can't take the chance that I'll be in the office but won't be able to get home.

woooo they closed Stony Brook!! Snow day for the college kids too!

I had SIXTEEN years of school in NY and not ONE snow day!!! I'm in SHOCK!!:scared1:

Yup, I can't remember ever having a snow day.

I think my son had 3-5 snow days while he was in school here (he's a college freshmen now). When we lived in North Carolina, they would close school or dismiss early if they got a little dusting of snow.

We don't have snow days built into our calander.
