NYC/ Jersey drivers where is a good hotel stop?

We have decided to make a sleep stop. We will be leaving around 1pm on a Friday. Any good recommendations on which state to stop in, a nice clean hotel is important. I figure we will do about 9 hours of driving , maybe more.

Does that mean you'll probably be stopping in North Carolina?

I think either North or South Carolina, depending on how tired we get or how bad traffic is.
