NYC Hotel/ UPDATE (more help please)

We want to go to NYC in Febuary to see a couple shows. One is at the Gershwin Theatre (222 W. 51st St.) and the other is at Astor Place Theatre (434 Lafayette St.).

We don't mind walking, or taking public transportation. We'd rather be sort of in the middle of everything. Anyone have any suggestions for their favorite hotel in that area? Hopefully under 200/night, but I'll savor any raving review

Quite a few years ago, we stayed in a beautiful old-woprld style hotel called the Hotel Wales. It was on madison Avenue, and it reminded me very much of Eurpena style hotels that I have stayed in. At the time, it was about $125/night.

I haven't needed to stya overnight in NYC since then really, so I have no idea if it's even still there, but it was a lovely, cozy, homey place.

I had my prom at the Waldorf...I didn't see any of the rooms, but the ballroom and the room where we had "cocktail hour" (juice and cookies) was really nice

My favorites are the Plaza (elegance at Central Park)and the Marriot Marquis (excitement of Times Square). The Wardolf is quite lovely too, very old fashioned luxury.

Some of my favorite NYC hotels are:

The Doubletree Guest Suites right in the heart of Times Square. Great staff, great rooms, very convienent location.

The New York Hilton on 6th Ave is very nice. It caters to the convention crowds, so sometimes you can get really good deals on the weekends there.

The Rennessance on 7th Ave. is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in. I've stayed there a total of three times. The same guy checked me in all three times, and he remembered me by name as soon as I stepped off the elevator. He said, "Welcome back, Miss Young" before I could even open my mouth.

The Times Square Hilton on 42nd Street is very cool. It's a relatively new hotel (less than five years). The rooms are fantastic, little more hip than your typical hotel.

We just saw Beauty and the Beast last month and we stayed at the Sheraton on 7th/51st Street. There is also another Sheraton at 7th/53rd. They're both 4 star hotels and very nice

Thank you all for the suggestions. I was thisclose to booking the sheraton when I remembered a Great Hotels show on the travel channel. Sam profiled a hotel called the "Library Hotel" and I loved the place. I looked into it, and although a tad expensive, I think it will be really cool!

Now, for some more help It's located at 299 Madison Ave. About how long of a walk is it to the major places (broadway, central park etc) I think it's right near grand central, but I'm not sure.

Finally, now that you've given me great ideas for hotels, what about restaurants?

ok, Grand Central Station is at 42nd Street on the east side. Times Square is 42nd Street on the West side. it's about a 10-15 minute walk across town. you could also take the subway from Grand Central to Times Square -- there's the #7 train and also the shuttle (the "S" train). the Empire State building is at 34th and 5th, a very short walk downtown, or one stop on the #6 train from Grand Central. Rockefeller Center is at 5th and 40th, you're practically there. Central Park is at 59th St., also not too bad a walk from Grand Central. (Remember, the blocks going up and down town are shorter than the blocks going from one avenue to the next so walking from 42nd street to 43rd street is a lot shorter than walking form 5th avenue to 6th avenue.)


for casual dining I like John's Pizza on 44th and 8th, Ellen's Stardust Diner on 51st, Ollie's Noodle Shop on 44th and 7th...
