We are sailing out of NYC on the Dream in a month. We are staying over one night before the cruise. I'm not from the NYC area and I wanted to know if staying in a hotel in NJ would be a good option, if so what city.

Check out Jersey City, though it might be pricey as you will be close to NY. If you add in a cab it might end up being the same as NY.
Did you mean that you are sailing on the Magic? The Dream only sails out of Port Canaveral

Or Weehawken. Sheraton Lincoln Harbor is nice and has great views of the NYC skyline. There is a ferry right outside the hotel over to NYC. I stayed here with friends when the Fantasy came into NYC to be christened.

The ferry lets you off 2 blocks from the cruise terminal and it is an easy walk on a sidewalk. You will pass the Intrepid Air/space museum.

There are a few NYC hotels in Times Square that are a quick cab or longer walk to the pier but can be pricey. You would have to compare prices to see what is the best deal for you.

Which cruise. We are on the October 7th one.

Staying in NJ is fine, but there's really nothing scary about staying in NYC either (except maybe the price).

How do you plan on getting to the port the next day? How are you getting to NJ? Is it the price thing that's the problem? Just wondering why you'd want to stay in NJ instead of NYC. That may make it a bit easier to help answer your question.

There is a thread on here somewhere that has lots of information about the NY cruises. It just may take a bit of searching.
