I need some help from those of you that were more closely effected by Sandy...

Let me give some background:

I am in charge of my hockey booster club's Christmas dinner coming up on Dec. 4th. We usually do a gender specific gift exchange. I asked the membership the other day that instead of doing the gift exchange (and getting crap), that we gather hats, gloves, scarves, blankets for those effected by Hurricane Sandy. It was also suggested also gift cards for Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target. The one member just retired from Newark Airport and he checked with his former co-workers to see if they had any specific place they were gathering donations. Unfortunately, there was no leads.

I am looking for a place taking donations. If it comes down to it, I will send these donations to the Red Cross. We have a place here also called Mission Central, but they are a little more stringent on what they receive for donations.

Does anyone know of any other place to send donations?

Any help would be appreciated!! (BTW...we are also going to be collecting at the hockey games too for those that wouldn't be able to attend the meeting)

Thanks so much for doing this!!!!

Recent reports online and on the news have said that most shelter areas for the victims are well stocked, and in some cases overstocked, with clothing items and blankets.

Monetary donations seem to be what is most in need at this point. Here's two easy ways to donate:

- Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make an automatic $10 donation

With that being said, it might be a nice idea to gather toys, wrap, and label them for boys and girls. These can be sent to shelters in the area. Google those that are in beach towns such as Belmar, Toms River, Seaside Heights, Point Pleasant, etc.

There is a benefit concert on TV tonight called "Restore The Shore", sponsored by MTV. Go to their website for additional information. I live in South Amboy, and the damage is widespread.

Awesome! :thumbsup2

There are small shore towns like Laurence Harbor, Cliffwood Beach, Keyport, Bradley Beach, Keansburg that don't get the press that Seaside does but they are hurting. Google those towns also for places to donate.

ABC News just did a story about an Adopt a Family page on FB. This might be another option. Search for Adopt a Family Hurricane Sandy.

Thanks for all the responses. We are looking to lean more towards the gift cards for places to get the supplies to rebuild instead of the gloves and winter items. Although I won't turn them away if someone wants to donate them.

I may look into Point Pleasant Beach&I have a cousin that lives there. We know he got out in time, but we aren't sure what he has left.

A little update from our dinner!! We had 37 members at the dinner and we received a great amount of hats, gloves, scarves, blankets and over $200 in gift cards. I am still collecting at the hockey games until next weekend.

I called Mission Central and they are still taking donations, but a truck will not go down until after the first of the year (which is fine with me). They will mark this donation strictly for Sandy victims.

It completely warms my heart that we had a great response from the members there. I have had a couple of the members come up to me and say that they were glad I said something and did this instead of the gift exchange.
