For any one who has ever been to NY, where did you stay? What are some places you do and not not suggest? I have only been once, and it was for a conference and a room at the hotel I stayed at for that is $600/night:scared1: needless to say... I won't be staying there again anytime soon. I want to go next December as a graduation celebration. I would ideally like to stay near timesquare preferably in time square, unless there is somewhere that is better. I plan to take the train up so will not have a car, but really I would never drive in that anyway. I want to do some shopping, and also see a broadway show while there. Any suggestions are more than welcomed. Thanks!

Almost anyplace is better than Times Square.

Hotels -

The Library Hotel is cool (and close to Times Sq. but not in the mess itself)

The Soho Grand is very nice (and in SoHo)

The On The Ave. is uptown and nice

There are tons, what do you want to do? What kind of shopping, etc. That'd help you figure out where to stay.

I'd like to have the same information please. Thank you. Somewhere safe near time square that we can maybe walk every where. I hope that the poster gets the information they need. :)

Well walk everywhere isn't really feasible, where is it you think you'll want to go a lot/stuff you want to do, that you'll be walking to, if you see what I mean.

ahhh
Christopfer st to 39 and 7 ave about 25 minutes when the path has had problems....
39 and 7 to 81 and Madison 25 minutes did this plenty of times

This is NY isn't feasable doesn't exist in NY :lmao:

I'm guessing you're in Jersey.

You're talking about two, specific, about two-mile trips - I don't know where *they* want to go or what they want to do.

If they want to see a show at BAM and see St. John the Divine, then walking is not particularly feasible, no, unless that's gonna be the focus of most of your time.

If they want to spend time in SoHo and see the WTC thing, and want to walk to everything, a hotel in midtown is not a good bet. If they want to see a lot of shows, a hotel in the financial district would be dopey, etc.

I most definelty want to go to macy's and then I'm not really sure about anywhere else at this point. I want to see a broadway show, possible mary poppins, or the rocketts. I would love to go to central park and eat at tavern on the green, and just stroll around for a little. I've been to the empire state building but wouldn't mind going back, and I definetly want to see the statue f liberty. I've been once, but it was at night, so I couldn't really see anything. Thanks for the help.

I am hopeing for mostly walking as well. I know you can't walk everywhere, so I'm ok with taking the subway to the far off places, but I want to stay in the midst of the shopping, and shows.

I want to stay in the majority of shopping, and close to broadway.

Hampton inn on 851 8th ave .. nice place, decent breakfast, easy walking to Times Square , Saks, St. Patricks , Macys , Rock Center shopping, etc etc. 5th ave shopping , TIffanys , FAO schwarz a bit further but doable. We walked to Bryant Park also. Only time we took a Cab was over to St. John the Divine ... which was about 4.5 miles away .
We were there last weekend. I liked that they had a nice grocery store about a block away , we would grab a sandwhich , salads , drinks and head back to hotel for a quick nap and clean up before heading out for evening show and late dinner. We enjoyed Thalia restaurant for a nice lunch one day.. others with us also really liked THalia .
Radio City is close and Wicked Theater is even closer.

We enjoyed our stay and would stay with them again.

Tavern on Green closed since I think 2009 .

I would not recommend the W hotel on Lexington. Rooms are ridiculously small. We have liked the Marriott Marquis and the Doubletree in Times Square. The Waldorf is great too and their rates can sometimes be the same as the Doubletree.

I have only been once, and the reviews on trip advisor are mixed, but I really liked The Roosevelt Hotel... it was at 45th & 2nd so a little away from Times Square and Broadway, but it is across the street from Grand Central which was helpful. They were (and might still be) in the process of renevations when we went in June.

I actually injured my back in NY and took taxis most places but we couldnt get one and were cutting it too close for curtain on How to Succeed at the Hirschfeld theater, and I walked it, freshly bulging disks and all (OMG the pain!) and it wasn't anymore than 10 min to walk it, taking breaks at every stoplight to lean against buildings which was the only thing that helped my back. Bad memories of pain that trip, but I adore NYC! I wanna go back!

the Sheraton Times Square is a few blocks away from TS. I used my Starwood points. Not the prettiest hotel but very good safe location. Easy walk to everything.

Stayed by the Yotel Hotel. Very cool 3 long blocks to TS. My DSIL liked staying at the Marriott Times Square. That is really in the thick of things next to Hershey and M&M stores.

My next stay I want to stay at the Beacon on the upper west side I love that section. I saw this hotel recommended a few times her on the DIS.

You're a few years late for Tavern, it's way closed (and the food sucked, so no loss ;)) though definitely go to the Park regardless. If you want to see shows and such, I think I'd recommend the Library Hotel, if you're not on a strict budget.

The 'stay in the majority of shopping' thing is hard here. There's Macy's, Bloomie's, but those are everyplace. There are Saks and Bergdorf's and L&T's too, but again, you can find them other places. Those are midtown and the Library (er... if you like books, it's the place for you) is decently located to them but out of the Times Square mess and it's right next to a train hub.

However, if like, you asked me where to go shopping, I'd send you to SoHo and over through Canal and up to the village, you know? Or maybe on the Upper West Side, for the same reason, plus the Park is there (as is Riverside Park). Because it's all lovely shops and boutiques and interesting things and a mix of larger and smaller stores. I wouldn't ever send anyone shopping in Times Square, it's M&Ms and rip-off electronics stores, there's nothing there.

So... if you want to shop, I'd say the SoHo Grand or the On The Ave. and shop places you won't find in a mall in another state. :confused3
