I need to vent and get some advice!
Here's the background: I graduate nursing school on May 7th!!!! Well my mom and I love Disney and what better way to celebrate my major accomplishment but with a trip to disney, as well as celebrating my birthday! Well when we decided this was what we wanted to do we booked a trip from May12th-20th. We are renting points from a friend with a split stay at AKV and BLT from the 13-20 and the 12th is regular reservation night at AKV. Well here's whats going on, I just got an e-mail from the college administration about the NCLEX review class (the state board test to become an RN) and it's a mandatory review class scheduled THE WEEK AFTER GRADUATION:scared1:!!!! May10th-12th and we are planning on leaving the 11th and driving from Ohio. We have the backstage magic tour booked for Friday the 13th and ADRs booked from 180 days out! I am so frustrated and hope I can figure this out!

Well congrats!! See if there are any other alternate dates? I'm sure there's one. If not, maybe consider flying out the night of the 12th. I'm going on the 12-17th, but my exams are in late April.. I'm definitely looking forward to Disney to help get me through the semester :goodvibes

I'm glad u posted! I misposted the dates we are checking into AKV on the 12th with our regular reservation and our renting points start on the 13th, I gues that would make a little more sense! Plus driving from Ohio takes a little extra time!

ICK that really stinks!!! Well..... someone may have asked this already- is it possible for you to fly? You could fly out after your review? Southwest is who we fly from Columbus 100% of the time, although AirTran has some great rates normally!!

The title of your thread says it all: "Nursing School is ruining my vacation!"

Obviously a WDW vacation is much more important to you than a nursing degree, so just chuck the state mandated exam and go enjoy Disney. Maybe when you come back you can enroll in bartending or truck driving school.

Qiut whining, toots, and get your priorities straight, Sheesh.

Sometimes if you can't say anything nice you shouldn't say anything at all. It isn't the state board exam that I am would be miss, it is the REVIEW class provided by my school. I have spent 5 years of my life, with a 3.8 GPA in nursing school, I'm pretty sure I have my priorities straight. I booked this vaction over 180 days out and they are now just notifying us about the review class provided after graduation. This vacation is already paid for and I would be loosing money and being a college student I work my *** off to enjoy a vacation such as this. I was asking for advice from people not your opinion of my choices. If anyone has been in a similar situation and what they did. Before you respond with rude comments about someone's character, maybe you need to know a little about the individual first and you know nothing about me. Thanks

OP, ignore him. This really wasn't necessary...

My SIL graduated nursing last summer, and she had a few NCLEX dates to choose from. See if you can take the test on a different day.

You do have your priorities straight - nursing school is long and arduous and you deserve a break - come back refreshed and more ready than ever to rock your NCLEX!

Well I think most people in that situation would just fly. Try it! It'll be an adventure in itself. :flower3:
If not, looks like you have to try and change your dates.

Thanks for all the positive replies!! It will all work out in the end some how!!! I will see if I can miss the last day of the review if I can't get into an earlier review or we will see if we can change our regular reservation day to after the rented reservation and just re-work the our schedule! Thanks:goodvibes

I don't fly!!!

My son is an avid musician and wanted to be in the marching band last year. We had a family vacation planned for the last three weeks before school started. We found out about a month before we left for vacation that band camp would be during the middle of our WDW vacation. Band camp is mandatory - miss it and you are out of the marching band.

We gave him a choice - deal with your fear of flying, or choose between WDW and Band. We would fly him back up for band camp, then back down to join us again, but he would have to fly alone (he is 13 years old). He chose to fly. His band won the state championship. He is very glad that he faced his fears.

Looks like you have a similar choice. Miss some WDW time or face your fear of flying. Good luck. :goodvibes

Since it is a regular reservation can you just cancel that? Maybe add a day on at BLT at the end of the trip? This was you can leave right after your course (Maybe you can scoot out an hour or so early if you explain you have to meet your mother;)), drive down and be there the evening of the 13th? Then you can go to your seminar.

I feel your pain. I am in grad school and it always messes with the best times to do to WDW...good luck!

I'm just piping in to say that nursing school tends to have that effect. Always changing, and you can't plan anything in advance. I understand completely, and I hate it too. After all your hard work, you definitely deserve that vacation so you can come home ready to rock the NCLEX! Good luck, and I hope everything works out for you! :)

Take the flight. Statistically speaking you are exponentially more likely to face death and/or dismemberment on your 17 hour drive than you are on the 2 hour flight.

You can always partake in a celebratory drink or two at the airport if the nerves really get the best of you.

First congrats on your upcoming graduation!!!

The way I see it you have two choices if there is not another review class you can get in: 1)leave a day late and cancel plans or 2)fly out after the class. Personally I would welcome being "forced" to fly. I do not like to fly in the least, but that drive to WDW is a killer. It seems like you are NEVER going to get there..and I only have to drive 8 hrs.

If you need a car while you are there (and can't/don't want to rent), your mom could always leave as planned and you fly out after your class on a one-way ticket. Driving that far on your own is no joy, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Been there and done that. At least you'd be driving home with her.

If you have to go with option 1, it is disappointing, but it isn't the end of the world. I absolutely get you're excited about the plans you've made, but hey, you've graduated! All your hard work has paid off! Celebrate!!!! You're still far enough out that you might be able to shuffle some ADRs or reschedule that tour. You and your mom will have a FABULOUS time regardless because you are there together celebrating this wonderful accomplishment.

Last year I had my own school snafu with a WDW trip. No where near as inconveniencing as yours though. I was headed to WDW to celebrate graduating (I was on the 20 yr. plan ;) ) in May. My company, who was paying for my degree was sold, and I was out of a job. As a result my completion date was pushed back while I got my financing in order. Instead of me going to celebrate being done, I was finishing my last class. I chose to go on ahead. The class wasn't particularly difficult, and I was able to do the work I needed to do while at WDW. It was a wonderful trip. Even though I still had a few weeks left, it was wonderful to celebrate with my DD(10) the "light at the end of the tunnel". It was the beginning of the end of that chapter in my life, and my DD was so happy to have her mom back.

It may not be all you had planned, but no matter what, you and your mom will have a wonderful time celebrating this life achievement!

yep...nursing school will do that to you. Its 4 years of excitement, unpredictability, ridiculous exams, really not learning anything that you need for the job (this comes with working), and taking from you even after!

Oh I've been there...and have been out of it for 5 years now! I remember my last day of practicum was Dec 5. It was a night shift, and I got off and skipped gleefully to my car thinking that I would never have to work again and not get paid! It was a wonderful feeling. I also remember, gosh...I should book a trip before Christmas. I found a great deal to the Caribbean, one of my friends was going to come with me...we were so excited. But low and behold...the University called me. I had a meeting to discuss my final evaluation and final mark with my counsellors and my instructor on Dec 15! And that couldn't be changed because they had so many people to see that they couldn't accommodate a different time. Well...so much for celebrating. It was only a MILESTONE in my life.

I feel your pain...but, if you can, try to go. Don't miss out on this. You need it after school. I regret not doing it!
