Nursing School Advice

I also agree with Shelli, as a nurse (13 years) take the summer off and take care of your self and your family. Do not give your self the opportunity to get comfortable in an LPN position and settling less for what you are working towards.
Good luck :):thumbsup2

Sorry for the few that think getting an LPN is like beneath u.( not all of
the posts just the few) 1. You, yourself said it u never know what life may
throw at u. 2. You will do more as an LPN than an aid. 3. You will get
paid more as an LPN than an aid 4. Whoever hires u as an LPN may pay
for some of ur school as an RN 5. And lastly if ur big dream is a hospital
nurse in MA or CA. check some other state there as simply no jobs here for
new grads.

I am brand new to this board...looking around for info regarding our first trip to Disney and I saw the nursing school post. I will finish my last semester of nursing school in December and I think you should take the summer off! I have 5 kids and so I understand how overwhelming it can be to keep up with the kids, and stay on top of school. I also think if there is any way possible you should continue on to an RN degree and bypass the LPN. I disagree with a previous poster who said that this is a snobby attitude...it really is a dollar and cents issue...as an RN you will make substantially more and have many more opportunities- that is it period. Maybe you could try taking out a small student loan to help with expenses- many employers will pay off your student loans once you graduate and work for them. Regardless of what you decide...nursing school but you are on the right track...enjoy your kids for the summer and then jump back into the craziness...in the end it will all work out. A wise professor once told me that she thought it was better to be a B student and an A mother...I frequently try to remember that! Good luck to you!:goodvibes

I would take the summer off. I don't know where you are, but here no one is hiring LPNs. Actually, the hospital just let go of ALL their LPNs. I believe it's even Mayo wide now, and I heard Mayo boasting since doing that their infection rates have really dropped. :confused3 I think more and more places are moving away from LPNs, so why kill yourself if you wouldn't be able to get a job anyway? The pay wouldn't be as good but I'm guessing you'd have a much easier time finding a job as an aide than an LPN if you needed to. I have a daughter with severe medical issues...it takes alot out of you (as does nursing school.) I'm afraid if you push yourself, you're going to be really burnt out when things really get going! If you were promised a really great job as an LPN if you needed it, that'd be one thing, but it doesn't sound like that's the case! Good luck.

I'm definitely heavily on the "take the summer off" side of this!

Did you ask your instructors what the likelihood of your successfully completing the work was if you take off ~25% of the summer? I can only speak for the classes I have experience with, but I can tell you that VERY few students could pull it off. Just because you are allowed to do it doesn't make it a good idea. :headache:

Good luck deciding!

1) do u have to work anyway
2) for those that think this is not a gd idea-would not at least agree
u will get more exp. as an LPN than an aid.- for over a yr til u take ur
RN boards.
3) She is working anyway-why not make more money and work less over next yr
4) who went to nursing school and did not have massive
stress
5) and for those who think nursing homes and RNs don't go to together
they do,again especially in those states where there are no hosp. jobs
go to a couple of nursing sites and find out what CA. and MA grads are doing. This probably does not apply to her situation.
6) Lastly I'm not telling her not to get ur RN-u most certainly sure
and don't waste time
PS-in the last 2 days CNN has come out w/ the jobs that are in most
demand-nursing not on the list-home health aid was-and I'm not telling
her to go and do that

I am also an RN- 13 years, NP- 5 years and survived nursing school stress work ect with a ill child. There will always be what ifs. Know your long term goals and stick to them. You are a good student and have great life experiences and maturity to be a great, resilient nurse. This last year of school will go fast. I would take some time to breathe and enjoy my family and get caught up to finish the last year strong. But go with your gut and do what is best for you and your family.
