I don't want this to turn into a funny or flame post but I was talking to another Pin Collector nurse and we both agree.
When I became a nurse I worked VERY hard. Nurses don't just walk into a hospital and learn how to take a temperature.
To become a nurse I had to take 2 years of college courses, mainly Science. I took the same Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry and MicroBiology courses that medical students took. I then had to take 2 years of Nursing school to achieve the Associate in Nursing that I hold now.
I am almost finished with my BSN, which mean't another 64 credits at a four year college.
We have to be licensed in the state we practice in, and most of us have malpractice insurance just in case someone we take care of decides they were not taken care of the way they expected. And if for some reason we are taken to court, the hospital and Dr's are not there for us, Dr's protect each other but would toss a nurse into the Lion pit to save their own butts.
We also need to do a certain amount of Continuing Education hours each year depending on the state we live in in order to renew our license.
A Dr does surgery and goes home. The nurse is there with the patient 24 hours a day to make sure the healing is going well and to be the first to notice if anything is going wrong. They call the Dr for orders, sometimes in the middle of the night. Have you ever been screamed at by a Dr who thinks he is God when his patient is failing but he is angry that you woke him up? Then what does the patient say? "My Doctor saved my life"
I am insulted that Disney designed that Jessica Rabbit pin. For so many years we nurses have been fighting the porno movie stereotype of Nurses in the short skirts, with high heels and Disney belittles our profession with that pin.
I don't know many nurses now who even wear dresses, scrubs and pants are the appropriate clothing with all the work that needs to be done by the nursing staff.
Disney needs to look at the image they are portraying and rethink that pin. Somehow a public apology to all nurses is in order. We as a group need to lodge a complaint.
That pin would be more appropriate as the Hooters waitress or Stewerdess (sorry flight attendant) logo, nurses do not deserve to be insulted in that way. Peggie

Thank you for posting that. I felt the same, but didn't see anyone else complaining and thought maybe I was being over sensitive.

Styling a pin as such only perpetuates the stereotype that nurses (women) are sexual 'things'. I have no problem with 'sexy' Jessica herself.....she is a pin of an animated characterization. There are people such as Jessica in the real world, so no problem with having a character as such. But to apply that idea to nurses is just so utterly demeaning.

I second everything Peggie has said. I busted my butt to earn my degree and most of being a nurse isn't pretty. Do I love it? Well yes, I do. Do I want to be on someone's fantasy list? NOT!

It has taken a great deal of time for nurses to be viewed as more than a doctor's little hand maiden. Then Disney comes out with a pin like that? What is the point? I am thinking that most pins for Nurses Day are purchased by and for nurses. Did they really think that depiction would appeal to nurses?

I agree with everything you guys both said. I am not a nurse, but I know plenty of them. The thing you guys have to remember is Disney is in this for the money. Sex sells. Have you noticed the number of Jessica pins they have put out in the past few months? I think Disney was just trying to make a pin they thought would sell. Personally, I much prefer the Chip n Dale one from WDW or the minnie ones from past years.

I see your point. I didn't even think of that.

(But I did get a Jessica Nurse.) :bounce: I won't wear her -- how's that? ;)

Ladies...look who your talking about, men. Men don't need a pin to have more thoughts about sex. We already think about it all the time. And as far as nurse fantasies, you can substitute any profession and men will come up with some situation to make it work. I have heard a stat...(sex)... that says men think...(sex)...about it...(sex)...every 5 seconds...(sex)...

What were we talking about?

Okay Mario, You make a valid point. MEN......can't live with 'em, can't.......oh nevermind. :p

I also know that Disney is about money and I have no problem with that, because I know they are a FOR PROFIT company after all.

I wish they just would have stayed away from the stereotype. The pin definitely depicts a stereotype and I don't like it! When they make policeman, fireman etc pins they do not toss in a stereotype, it is most respectful as far as I see it.

As for Luv2Roam.....sweetie.....you can wear the pin......it is just that I don't like it! :D

Let's not forget, there is the occasional guy nurse. (Like me!) I found the other nursing pins this year to be far more stereotypical of nurses. (For example, the stupid hat in both the chip and dale pin and the disney auctions pin.) I think the nurse Jessica pin is reflective more of her character than of nurses. I have thought of trying to pick one up, however, to wear on my lanyard at work in hopes of stirring up my coworkers!:p

The way doctors act has nothing to do with Disney:D It's been my experience that if they think they can act like jerks, they will. I have the advantage of being 6'5", so oftentimes just standing as near to them as I can prevents them from acting like spoiled brats.:smooth:

I agree, just keeping it light. I have a brother, a sister, a BIL and SIL that are nurses. I haven't seen my sister in a dress since the 70's when she graduated.

I sent my sister a link to Nurse Jessica and asked if she was offended.
Her reply, "Yea, I wish I looked like that! Only porno nurses wear white and especially hats anyway."
;) :jester:

My wife of 15 years is a CRNA. She loves her job. I asked here if she was offended by the pin and she wasnt. We had a good laugh about some other nurse pins that they should make. Please note we are not pin collectores if they exist we did not know. How about A Cruella Nurse, Ursala Nurse, Cinderella Nurse, Snow White Nurse, etc.

:p

I am an RN, though no longer practicing. I can understand why the idea of Jessica Rabbit dressed as a nurse may be insulting. Actually though, I don't find myself insulted. I think it is a cute pin, and I will definitely be purchasing it for my collection when we get down there in June. As someone else said... "I wish I looked like that!"

When I had my heart attack all my nurses looked like that until the drugs wore off, then it got weird.

Sorry Peggie but alas SEX sells, if you look on Ebay you will see that every single Jessica nurse pin has a bid, and not one will sell for less than $25.00 I bet.

Disney knows this, and will not now nor ever offer an apology to nurses anywhere, they don’t even mind the Tinkerbell in net stockings fantasy pin because they know it will promote all the Tinks they sell, and by the way you cant get the sexy Tink for under $75.00 anywhere.

Also I am a pig of a man, and just shelled out $24.99 for the Jessica pin, I liked it but mostly because Donna is a nurse and collects nurse pins of which there are like 2 million of.

So since Disney will not apologize I will… So I as a man obsessed with sex (we all are) I am hereby responsible for Disney making a sexy pin that we must all posses, yes as a man we caused the invention of porn movies magazines the list goes on. No no the women of the world are innocent even the ones that wear almost nothing and flaunt it in front of us, the we want to be pure Southern Baptist Christian type knowing we are weak, no they are not at fault. So on behalf of all us sex focused men out there we apologize for making Disney make this pin.

By the way does anybody have the nude Jessica series up for trade?:teeth:

All right Ed! Watch it with the Southern Baptist cracks. We ain't perfect, but thank the Good Lord we are forgiven! Whew!

Just kidding, no offence taken.

Besides, New Age is the rage, if they're bad they hug rocks and kiss trees to make it all better. EEeeewwwwww... that's too wierd for me.

Keep it light!
Winnie

PS: Go Nurses!! Many thanks to the ones who cared for my "pop" and for my mama while she's been in and out of hospitals.

My Momma (y'know, the one who made my suit) is actually a Nurse, and one of my biggest inspirations. She works non-stop caring for the elderly in a nursing home, and she still goes to classes eventhough she's worked every unit there is. She even plays the piano and sings to her residents as often as she can. She's a true angel of mercy. And LOVES PINS!

I'll be interested in her reaction to the Jessica pin. It would be great to see the aforementioned characters as Nurses, but Disney doesn't want to stray too far away from a character's personality. Jessica actually appears as a Nurse in one of the Roger Rabbit shorts, and in all likelihood, it is that sole reason they chose to use her for that pin. I think it's coincidental to her having her own series at DL.

Anyway, Thanks to Nurses everywhere! I hope Momma DOES like it, cause she's getting one anyway. (Thanks Scooter!)

I will be graduating in '08 and I love anything nurse related so I am trying to get every nurse pin there is from Disney. My DH is having a fit for me to get the Jessica pin (he drools) and I truely don't have a problem. I think it's just Disney making money and I will make my money by being a nurse. I have to admit I feel as though I am joining an elite group (after all nurse's work their butts off) and finally Disney is giving recognition(sp?) As long as they don't ask me to dress like that I'm okay;)

Darn. I didn't realize this thread was 4 (YIKES!) years old......anyone know where I can get a Jessica pin?
