Nunchucks = weapon?

Cruising next weekend (Fantasy 10/15) and have a strange question about the following policy (per published rules):

"Weapons and firearms (including ammunition, knives—including dive knives—swords, daggers or any other types of weapons) are not allowed onboard under any circumstances."

Question - My wife and boys are active in Taekwondo and working on their nunchuck form. They are interested in working out while on board and want to bring set of nunchucks onto the ship for that purpose. Do you think they'll have a problem doing so? My opinion is that nunchucks really are a weapon in name only. That said, I can see a CM being extra cautious at security screening.

Thoughts? Is this something that could be cleared with Disney ahead of time somehow? Should we just try to bring a pair on board (they aren't cheap so wouldn't want to have them confiscated)?

Thanks for any insights.

Yes nunchucks are weapons. Sorry! (I take TKD too and our instructors are clear that they ARE weapons.)

I wouldn't try.

They could practice other forms or figure out something non-weapon to use instead.

And just to point out, they will be required to wear shoes in the gym. I found on my RCCL cruise this summer it just threw everything off, so I focused on cardio and strength.

Where would you use them? There aren't many open areas for such activities. But, I also think they would not be allowed. If they were confiscated, they would be held at the terminal for you to reclaim once the cruise was over.

Excellent point about space.

This is a good point I'm sure they hadn't considered. Wearing shoes would be weird for them. Based on the initial responses here, I'm going to do my best to convince them to leave the chucks at home. Thx.

I was just starting to learn Taegeuk Oh Jang before my cruise this summer and had planned to practice it, but I got confused partway through so opted to wait until I was home so I didn't teach it to myself wrong. I tried my other forms and it was too weird doing the kicks in shoes. I focused a lot on upper body strength and threw in some cardio as well. I was on a 12-night cruise (2 weeks all together with pre-cruise stay) and really didn't feel like (and my instructors said they could tell I'd done something while on the trip) I lost much at all NOT doing the forms or my kicks or punches.

I might insist, if I were you. They will take the nunchucks away from them. Since they are considered a weapon you could be talking legal issues. At the very least they will take them from them until you get back.

An interesting side note - A few years ago before our Western Caribbean cruise, I contacted DCL to ask about bringing my daughter's baton onboard for her to use during the talent show. (I'm not sure if they still do them, though.) She is a competitive baton twirler and I figured she could do a routine for the talent show. There are plenty of tricks she can do without tosses, which would be impossible with the low ceilings in the clubs. I was told that her baton would be considered a weapon, so it was a no go and we left it at home. So if a baton can be considered a weapon, I would certainly think that nunchucks would be. Take the week off and enjoy some time away from training!

My kids have foam nunchucks that they practice with. Do you have any of those? I could see them possibly allowing them as there is really no way to injure someone with them. The real ones, forget it.

I would leave them at home for sure, they look like weapons to me.
We are on the same cruise by the way, only few more days!

I'm not up to weapons forms yet (not even sure that my dojang teaches them), but I'd think the foam ones would not be nearly the same in terms of weight and how they react to being flipped around.

Plus, as we've said earlier, there really isn't a ton of extra space to be doing any kind of forms on a ship.

You would be surprised how much some of the foam models can hurt. No broken bones but definitely enough to cause pain.

Even if it was not considered a weapon sports equipment is prohibited on board.

Take them apart. One piece in each piece of checked luggage. Is there a rule against a stick or a rope? ;)

But then you're still left with the issue of "where would you use them?" I admit I'm not very knowledgeable about nunchucks, but don't they require some room to use them?

This has been interesting reading! I didn't realize what I thought was a simple question would generate such varied input. Thank you.

I have convinced my wife to leave the nunchucks at home. Now I just need to talk her into using that taekwondo time as Rainforest time instead! :rolleyes1

Just remember that the rainforest room is NOT the "exotic rasul room" that was on the classic ships .... :smooth:
