Dan -

Thanks for posting all these phone numbers.
I think a lot of folks must be donating today, because I tried the Red Cross # earlier & waited for quite a while - an operator never did pick up. If you can't get through on the phone lines, *PLEASE* try some of the online donation sites.

American Red Cross http://www.RedCross.org ...There's a specific Katrina/Hurricane Relief Fund link on the first page.

Salvation Army http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/ ...There is a specific Katrina/Hurricane Relief Fund link on this site as well.

Let's all do whatever we can...the scenes of destruction from Katrina's path remind me of the aftermath of the Southeastern Asia Tsunami.
And, after all, that is sort of what we have here - A "Katrina Tsunami", where a two story wall of water came ashore, partnered up with a killer wind.

agnes!

See links in my signature below for additional charities to donate to.

fyi Donations via Southern Baptist Disaster relief -- 100% of what you donate goes directly to disaster relief. They already have the infrastructure in place, so no funds go to pay for administration. 100% of your money goes to help provide disaster relief. I am not a Southern Baptist, but am donating through them for that reason. But thanks for helping through whichever agency you prefer.

Thanks, Dan for posting those number NO and all along the Gulf Coast is going to need a lot of help for a long time.

I have a lady next door at my Mom's who lives just outside of NO, she doesn't even know if she has a house to return to. She is just sitting in front of the TV watching the news, praying for a glimpse of her neighborhood.

bump.

Also, please don't donate to an agency you never heard of... Sad but true folks will take advantage of this for their personal gain!

Thanks for reminding me to donate blood tomorrow. I used to be a pretty regular donor, but haven't done that for a while. Something that costs only a little time but every bit helps. :sunny:

bump.

prayers going out to all those affected by Katrina.
agnes!
PS - It's the end of August and we're already up to "K"...

I was reading about these same charities in my newspaper this morning, and wondering which one would give the most to the victims. I'm catholic, but with their financial situation these days, I'm leaning toward the Red Cross.
Who's everyone else going through?

I was also thinking with the current rise of everything, including gas prices, are people going to be as generous, or are they giving at all?

After watching the news last night, with the red cross asking for money, the interviewer asked, "what do you say to people who tell you they have very little to give, and it you wouldnt notice my 5 dollar donation."

Which got me thinking.. If even 500 people donated 5 dollars, thats $2500..
That certainly makes a difference .(thas a lot of water)

So, I dont work for any of these organizations, and I have only been a visitor to the south, but hey, 5 bucks is 5 bucks... Imagine what us DISer's could do...

Good luck to everyone thats been displaced by this force of nature....

According to the Salvation Army, a $100 donation can feed a family of four for two days, as well as providing bottled water and a home clean up kit with bucket, mop, broom, sponges and bleach.

I added another organization to my signature, the Better Life Foundation raises money for a variety of children's causes in the Gulf Coast area, and can help disburse funds where they are most needed in that area.

I'm trying to not send my money to the Salvation Army and Red Cross, not because I have any problem with these organizations, but because I prefer to look longterm. I think both of those organizations will get a ton of donations, which will help with short term needs, but many other very worthwhile charities will see a decline in donations as a result. I also tend to donate to animal rescue organizations, because they never get public funds and are often overlooked by others.

Bottom line, send your donation to any charity you are comfortable with, any donation will help. Do not send money to any charity which solicits donations by phone and refuses to mail printed material with their Federal 501 (c) 3 number printed clearly on it.

Let's keep this at the top!!!! Is there anyway to put this as a sticky note at the top (there's already a place to donate for red cross.... but let's get all of the numbers up there!!!)

Thanks everyone for the info!

Just sent money to Red Cross and Noah's Wish.
