Hi all....yet another question for you.

I'm a newbie, still working my way up to two miles a day. For the last two days I've noticed that around about the 1 mile mark, my left foot starts to feel like it has been injected full of novicaine. I know...weird!!

It is such an odd feeling. My whole foot feels suddenly like it is this HUGE swollen thing, and I have no real feeling from the ankle down. Once I stop the treadmill and just gently walk around for less than 10 minutes, it settles down.

I checked that my laces weren't too tight. I was hydrated okay. My right foot was just a little tingly, while my left seemed to go ape.

Is this normal for starting out? Normal period? Any suggestions? I mean, I'd EXPECT to have numb feet at the end of a long race, but one mile in?!?! :scared1:

Thanks in advance (once again!).

I have that problem when I run on the treadmill, also.

I can only guess it's because your foot lands the same way every stride.

Maybe someone has a better explaination.

I don't know what is causing it but it would cause me to worry a little. The last time I heard those symptoms, my mom wound up having back surgery because of a herniated disk that was hitting a nerve everynow and then depending on what she was doing.

I would talk to a doctor about it because if your laces aren't too tight, it could be something major.

Sounds like something for a doc to check. I had numbness that was "cured" with a half size bigger shoe. As I put in steps my feet/foot will swell and the extra size helped me.

You could try what Vic was talking about and maybe try walking outside for a mile and see if the same thing happens as on the TM. Then you might have a better understanding as to what happens and could give a doctor more details to help find an answer.

Hi, welcome!

I have never really experienced this on a tread mill. I have on the cross-trainer/elliptical. I never really pay it much attention. I usually just take the pressure off that foot, shake it out and it goes away. I think it has to do with blood flow/curculation to the foot when it is under pressure/stress of your weight pushing down on it repeatedly for long periods of time.

It never happens when I am out running.

Good luck! Keep with it!

It could possibly be a neuroma. I have one, and before my podiatrist (who's also my husband) diagnosed me, 2 or 3 toes would get tingly and "asleep" feeling a mile or two into my treadmill runs. Right now, I'm able to keep the symptoms at bay with a cushioned pad in my shoe -- I really hope it doesn't progress to the point where I need injections or (gulp) surgery. I second the suggestion to talk to your doctor!

Sounds to me like you either way overpronate or supinate (which means that you need shoes that control for this) and during your run your pinching the nerve. In a severe form, it is called tarsal tunnel syndrome (just like carpal tunnel in your wrist). I agree..time for a doc on this one. My ds just had to have surgery for it b/c it went unchecked for so long.
