DETROIT — A federal judge ruled today that the government's warrantless wiretapping program is unconstitutional and ordered an immediate halt to it

U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor in Detroit became the first judge to strike down the National Security Agency's program, which she says violates the rights to free speech and privacy.
Given the ruling by the US Supreme Court that Bush is not a king, this is the correct decision.

Good ruling!

And it is fearmongering that requires us to surrender to our government.

Liberal Judges Require Us to Surrender to Terrorists

Another blow to the war on terror by the American left.

Another blow to the terrorists in the so called "war on terror".

Good grief! :confused3 This ruling a week after the plot to blow up planes was uncovered. :sad2:

Which is looking more and more dubious. Not so sure anything threatening was actually uncovered

One doesn't have to do with the other. There is thing called a warrant that can make it all legal and legit.

Kevin Drum has been tracking how the bomb plot is unraveling at http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2006_08/009353.php
So: was this a serious conspiracy? Or was it like the plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge that turned out to be a mentally disturbed dude with a blowtorch? Or the financial district alert in New York City that turned out to be based on information more than three years old? Or the plot to blow up the Sears Tower that turned out to be "more aspirational than operational"? Or Jose Padilla? What news about this plot are we going to discover buried on page A13 a couple of weeks from now?

good!

the only problem I have is with calling it "NSA's program" ...this is the Bush administration's program!! - NSA was just following their orders - and if I remember correctly, it came to light after NSA people had problems with it and spoke out....

Well, the one yesterday was a pile of rubbish. The plane got diverted and got given a fighter escort because a 59 year old lady kicked up a fuss and possessed a screwdriver, matches and hand cream - all banned substances. The flight crew tied her up for good measure.

Is it me or is that story a little silly? I mean, how does any of that warrant a fighter escort?

No kidding.

So "unconstitutional" it aided in this past terror plot, in the UK. :sad2:

Pathetic.

Just becasue they "MAY" have gotten something from it, does not make it right. In fact, in this country, if something is found during the course of unconstitutional search it is not admissable in court... the fruits of the poisonous tree.

I swear some people need to brush up the US Constitution, including its AMENDMENTS!

This issue is one of where we should draw the line.

The maximum disruption we can go to would be a 1984 style scenario - cameras in every room of your home, your every activity noted and observed, literally ALL of your life documented and filed away.

The minimum disruption we can go to would be simply to carry on life as if there were no terrorists at all.

How many freedoms and liberties are we happy to throw away?

While I do not recall the justices handing down a ruling that said, "Bush is not a king," I think this is very good news.

I'm old-fashioned. IMHO, they shouldn't be allowed to just listen to whomever they please. But, if they happen to catch bad guys, I'm not going to ask too many questions about how they did it. That way, innocent Americans are protected and guilty terrorists are caught.

You are correct. Many in the Justice Department and at the NSA objected to the program and hence all of the leaks. These people will protected as whistleblowers given the fact that the program has been found to be unconstitutional.

If they happened to catch you and label you a bad guy, I'd bet you'd ask how they did it.

But apparently it's easy to look the other way when it "has nothing to do with you". What so many people fail to realize is stuff like this has to do with ALL of us.

But this is a way old debate, and one I should know better than get involved in.
