is bc ferry my only choice?

When I looked online, I could only find tickets with auto. We won't have a car.

Don't know if I'm over stressing or sleep deprived. Probably both.

There's also small hydro planes that taxi between both cities...

If you take it on a weekend it can go as low as 99$CDN per person. With the USD strong compared to our dollar, it's not too bad imo.

That would be so fun! I'll have to check with the wimpy people in my party to see if they can handle it.
And check to see if there are any baggage limits. My husband and I will probably have 3 pieces. Unless I can be super awesome and get 2 weeks worth into 2! The other couple will probably have 3 as well.

It's really do-able to cut back on your luggage. My husband & I only travel with 2 suitcases for the two of us, regardless of length of trip 7 nights or 30. Yes, we packed only 2 suitcases and two backpacks for our 30 day European river cruise. The ships have self serve laundry facilities. Or you can send laundry out onboard. Honestly, people aren't going to remember that you may have worn that shirt or those shorts before.

I did 10 in Europe with only a carry on. But with FE gifts, Seattle weather and Alaska weather and formal clothes...I'm not sure how much I'll have. I'm assuming I can keep it to a regular size and a carry on. Hoping to do just 2 carry ones. We shall see.

Walk on passengers on the ferry are around $20 CAD. Your other option is to fly which is a lot more expensive, but obviously way faster.

My mom and I did a trip to Vancouver and Victoria a few years ago and we used Pacific Coach to take us from downtown Vancouver to Victoria. We loved it and it was super convenient. The bus drove right on the ferry and once the parking area was secure we were able to get off and walk around the ferry which is a very relaxing and scenic ride. Then shortly before we got to Victoria, we loaded the bus and we drove right off the ferry to the station. I know that you are coming the other direction but I'm sure it has the same MO. Just keep in mind that the port in Vancouver is not near the airport or downtown so the bus was a good option to get us where we needed to go since we didn't rent a car.

Here's details on the Prince of Whales from Victoria to Vancouver....
BC Ferries
  • Passenger fare is 17.20 plus taxes
  • you need to budget for public transit from downtown Victoria to the Swartz Bay ferry terminal ($2.50?). You also need to budget Tsawassen to River Rock ($2.75) and River Rock to downtown Vancouver ($4). Note the buses don't take US currency. They also don't give change.

  • the key thing to consider is luggage.... large pieces will be dropped off and retrieved when you get off the ferry. Then the other challenge will be taking the luggage in and out of buses and subways. Mixing with the general public, it's not pleasant when they need to walk around you, especially on busy afternoons with commuter traffic.
Bus http://bcfconnector.com/
  • $72 downtown to downtown
  • $37 onboard the ferry to downtown (not likely feasible as your luggage is separated from you).
There is also the new luxo V2V connector.
Additional thoughts...

We used Pacific Coach to go from Victoria to Vancouver.Very easy and we enjoyed the ferry ride.We easily went to our hotel after in Vancouver. We did this precruise to Alaska.
