Hey guys!

I've posted something similar to this in the past, but now it's a lot more important.

My school does a number of theatre productions throughout the year. For this year our director wrote the One Act that we will be taking to competition. Last spring he gave us a little preview and it sounded interesting.

Today was our Drama Club Kickoff and he gave us a more in depth story line.

I. LOVE. This. Story! It is so wonderful! I'm really excited about it!!

A bonus is the female lead's name is Becca :goodvibes .

I have only had small roles in plays. Very few lines. My biggest role was last year in the Fresh Air Series (it's for people with little stage experience and it's student directed). I wasn't lead, I was the lead's mother.

I would kill for the lead in his play. The character is so deep and I want to be his Becca, no pun.

There are so many amazing girls at my school that usually get leads. And I guess I don't really know how I compare because I've never auditioned for this director before. But I want this part so bad.

What do you guys think I should do? Do I even have a shot? Any similar stories?

My ticker shows how long it is until auditions, so if an idea involves time, that's how long I've got.

Thanks so much in advance.

Ok first off this show sounds cool and the fact that you guys are taking it to competition is even cooler! (My theatre is I think trying to beg my director to let us do that too). Now for advice, I'm not sure exactly what to tell you. Do you know what you are going to have to do for auditions? I would suggest finding that out as soon as you can, and if it's something like you picking a monologue, get to work on that asap. Then you will have more time to practice it and then be more confident during the actual audition.

As for you asking if you even have a shot, I say go for it whether or not you think you do! You never know what the director is looking for. For all you know, in their mind the character of Becca looks and is just like you and you are just made for the part! Just going in with CONFIDENCE and doing your best is all you can do.

I hope this kind of helps. I'm sorry I couldn't really say more but without knowing much about it, I'm not sure what good advice I could give. And I'd be glad to help more if I can as it gets closer (I've totally been in your shoes...and I'm about to be again in about 2 weeks for Scottish play auditions). Just let me know! :goodvibes

Honestly I would talk to your drama teacher. Ask if you can audition for the lead...I don't believe your a senior in high school so you have until then. Usually drama teacher's have a tendency of picking senior's for their lead roles since it is their final production. Get out there and don't be afraid to make a stand.

my advice would be to pick a monolouge very similar to the charater of becca. work on it till you feel it's to your level. i would go to the teacher after school and ask if he/she needs help around the classroom etc... give them a chance to get to know you. in conversation bring up the show and how you feel you'd make a great becca. bring up that you've worked hard at your audtion piece.your ready to take on the challenge of a bigger part. maygbe post a video of you doing your monolouge, i'd be happy to help you! i've been in a lot of shows and have student directed a couple as well!

See, preparing a piece would be a good idea, except you don't know what you are going to be reading until you are at auditions. Some times you don't know until you are up on the stage.

I have a feeling that even though the character's life isn't like mine, that I could play it. It just feels likes something I can do.

Wow I just really want this!!

I had the idea that I could talk to another teacher that used to be a director at my school. Ask him what he thinks, maybe he could help?

Talking to him could be a good idea. Maybe get some tips on auditions which could help. And since it is a cold reading audition, then maybe you could try working on your cold reading skills. Get some books of scenes from the library or online, find a friend, and pretend they are your audition piece and perform it. The more you work on the cold readings, the better you will get at them.

now i don't know if it's like this at your school, but the drama club at our school mets every thursday to play theatre/improv games. improv really helps with cold readings, being prepared to do anything and keeping 'on the ball'. don't get intimidated... get up on stage not thinking 'i'm audtioning for becca' 'i AM becca!'
