That's awesome Kathleen that your getting married on board.

Disney cruise line didn't exist when I got married:guilty:
Of course the dinosaur races were fun:lmao:

Where are you staying at WDW on the 3rd?
We will be at All Star Music this time from the evening of the 29th until we catch the cruise line bus for the port:woohoo::woohoo:

My name is also Kathleen, but I go by Kathy.

We will be celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary on November 7th! Congratulations!!!

19 is great!!! :cheer2::cheer2:
Not many make it that long any more.

I hope you told the cruise line as they will bring out a small free cake and sing a song to you at dinner. We have done it a few times.

Back a bit later to see if anybody else is interested in a meet or FE???

I say we should go for it!!! Its so much fun.

Kathy

We are staying at Bay Lake Tower on the 3rd to the 5th. I am a DVC member so my guests are staying at Saratoga Springs (Bay Lake was all booked up :guilty:)

We will be there on the cruise as well... It is our first cruise so we thought we start it off with a BANG! Any tips that anyone would like to share with some newbies? I find everything a bit overwhelming.

WELCOME!!! I can think of a few tips although thr first 3 may not work now because, at least for the Dream they want you to pick an arrival time. Not sur eif the Magic is doing that too?? If not then these are good tips.

1.Early arrival gets an early boarding pass number at check in.

2.Terminal opens 10 a.m.

3.Boarding starts around 11:30 to noon.

4.Keep camera with you at ALL times, even in the terminal. characters will appear there for photos. ourdoor viewing area of the ship for photos.

5 check in at kids club table while waiting to board ship. saves you time on the ship. In the Terminal it is near the cafe in the front of the area.Chceck in on line is better yet spo you just pick up their bracelet at the kids check in table.

6. Take a few ones. some for room service tips some to tip porters who take your bags at the termnal. $1 per bag is customary.

7. Take small bills for the islands. many small shops dont have change.

8. If your going to use your credit card on the islands, call your CC company first and tell them or you will have to wait on a phone call to ok all your purchases. This is a big hassle and can take 30 minutes or more.

9. Most shops who take credit cards, require a $20 minimum purchase.

10 Take camera to dinner each night, surprizes happen all the time. You wont be alone. you will even see cam corders at dinner.

11. arrive at all shows 20 minutes early for good seats.

12. arrive at character meets 10 minutes early

13 Princess meets arrive 15 minutes early

14. On Castaway cay if you want your photo taken with Captain Jack Sparrow, do NOT ride the tram to the beach area. It does NOT stop near him. You must walk in to the beach signs say 20 minute walk in it takes us 10 minutes. he will be along the way in the sand and photo has the flying Dutchman behind you, great photo! Check navigator for times he will be there.

15 There are characters along the way to the beach, ok to ride the tram for this. Lines are short and move quickly so it is a great opportunity to see characters without lines. check navigator for times and places.

16 Also characters appear at the gazebo near cookies BBQ on the island during the day.

17 Adult only beach has it's own area for lunch they often have steaks or lobster there as a special treat for the grown ups. But Cookies BBQ by family beach has more variety of other foods.

18 Dont miss the good bye late the last night in the atrium. Many of the characters and actors from the shows will line up on the stairs and will pose for photos for you. This farwell party is really nice and fun.

19 Check for photos everyday at shutters. buy a package deal and save $$ if you dont buy enough photos for the package deal they will refund you the difference at the end of your cruise .
or if you buy a photo and then decide the next day you see one you want more, just bring back the one you bought and the receipt and tell them you want to exchange it and they will be happy to do this for you.
Shortly they will be changing over to photo pass where you can order your photos on line after you go home. They may have photo kiosks working now, if so then its different to get photos.

20. You can order warm chocolate chip cookies or Mickey ice cream bars from room service even though it is not on the menu. The warm cookies are available in the evenings only

21. Bring 2 white pillowcases or a matte style picture frame in a zip lock baggie with water proof markers and leave at guest services desk ask to be autographed and it will be returned to you the last night all signed by the characters. I also add a card with my name and room number on it just in case their card gets lost. I like to use dark colored markers, the light colors dont show up as well.

22. If you need to change dining times or make a Palos reservation go to Wave Bands club directly upon boarding to take care of this. The sooner you do it the better your chances of getting what you want .At check in you will be given a paper that will have an exact time to be at the club.

23. I f you have kids leave a wake up call and then let them answer the phone. It will surprize the because Mickey will be on the phone telling them it is time to get up. If they are youngkids, have a cam corder ready to catch the surpize on their face. It is great.

24 Afternoon matinees of the shows are great to see. They are the exact same show, they leave out nothing but it is less crowded and kids arnt as tired, plus it makes for a more leisurely evening. No need to rush to or from the shows due to your dinner time. They usually have them on sea days only.

25. Pop is free in all restaurants and at the drink station on deck 9. But if you order it from waiter or buy at a lounge or bar you will be charge for it plus a gratuity.

26. Stop by the drink station and grab a drink to take with you to the shows or movies instead of buying a can a pop there. If you want a snack stop and grab pizza or hot dogs or fruit on deck 9 to take with you. again save money over buying a bunch of snacks for the kids.

27.At dinner kids can order from both the kids or adult menu.

28. The BBQ at the adult beach often has a fewer choices than Cookies BBQ on the family side but they often will have steak or lobster for the adults only BBQ. That is a nice perk.

29. No need to book floats and bikes ahead of time for Castaway Cay. They have tons of them. wait until you get there to make sure your really going to need the floats or have time to ride the bikes before renting them. we always just walk up and do it at the beach.

30. If you want to do the banana boat ride or the ski do(eco tour) I would book ahead of time. They do often have last minute openings so dont be afraid to ask when you arrive if you didnt book it and decided you'd like to do it.

31. if you rent bikes there are 2 nice trails just off the runway. The first one will have an observation tour. It has a great view of the island and ship. Bring your camera for this!! while up in the tower be sure and look around the base area of the tower. There are some whimsical things to see there too.

32. all the trails have ice cold water in big yellow barrels in wooden framed stands, so no need to carry your own unless you want to.

33. They do NOT have microwaves on board but they will give you hot water to heat baby food if you need it. They will also purre' some foods for you for babies if you request it.

34. Many of the island have attendants in the public bathrooms and they want a tip for you to use the bathroom. So keep a few quarters handy. Some are very pushy about this. Mostly around th eshopping areas rather than restrooms on excursions.

35. Casinos bathrooms are free and cleaner on the average than public restrooms in the shopping areas.

36. Often by mid morning bathrooms run out of t. paper and paper towels and soap. ALWAYS take your own sample size in your bag of T.Paper, hand wipes, hand sanitizer and seat covers. You'll need them most places.

37. NO water fountains to be found , water is precious on the islands. So you must buy bottled water if youw ant a drink. There is always someone selling bottled water on the ship by where you exit the ship if you want it. It is cheaper than what you'll find on the islands.

Be ware of vendors walking around saying one dollar for a bottle of water. some have been found to be used bottles they have filled up themselves. They open the bottle as they hand it to you so you dont know it wasnt sealed. They sell ice cold water a syou exit the hsip or bring your own bottle and fill it before leaving the ship.

38. If you want to have your or your childs hair braided, DO IT ON THE SHIP !! Dont do it on the islands accept Castaway Cay.
They will braid your hiar, shove the comb in their pocket them use it on the next person and the next without sanitizing or even washing the comb!!!
Plus they have been known to give people a hard time about the price they owe them.

39. ALWAYS set a price before doing anything on the island and make them stick to it. Taxis or private tours are great, but always set the price before you get into the cab.

40. Some excursion you drive the vehicle. Make sure before you leave home that your insurance will cover you IF you have an accident. Most will NOT cover you outside the U.S. without you making arrangements ahead of time.
Just before you drive off for your excursion you will be asked to sign a waver saying YOU are responsible for that vehicle and if your insurance wont pay, you will !!. Also many times you will share the driving with another couple, but only one of you are required to sign the form, so if you sign and the other person wrecks the vehicles, YOU are responsible!!

41. An over the door shoe holder works great for holding toiletry items so they dont slide off the small bathroom shelves.

I know there are more great tips but this early in the morning my brain isnt working too good.:lmao:

Kathy

One last thing:

Best tip I can think of is to read the Navigator each evening when its delivered to your cabin. It will tell you what is happening the next day so you can plan ahead what events you want to attend. Dont try to do it all or you'll be exhausted and wont enjoy yourself as much.

Good morning everyone,

Boy this is a quiet thread. We need to get things moving here. LOL!!

Our cruise will be here before you know it.

I am the Newbie here and dont want to step on anyboody's toes but if nobody is already keeping a FE list I will do it?

If nobody objects then just start sending me your names, how many kids and their ages and cabin number if you want to do the FE.
Some may not have an actual room number yet but thats ok, we will know 2 weeks prior to the cruise.
If you dont have enough posts to PM people you can e-mail me at,
sixtoedfrog@yahoo.com .
Just put something on the subject line so I dont delete you. The cruise date or FE info will work just fine.
Also if you PM me please include your e-mail address. That is so I can send you out the list easier.

If someone has already started alist please tell me who so I can send them my information. Like i said I dont want to step on anybody's toes here. But for the FE people need to know ahead of time so they know how many gifts to get.

Any new people who arnt sure what this is, just ask and we will explain. Its really fun, especially for the kids. Of course I am just a big kids so I get really excited each time we return to the room to see if there is something in my FE.

Back this afternoon,
Hope everyone is having a great day and will post soon,

Kathy

We are staying at Bay Lake Tower on the 3rd to the 5th. I am a DVC member so my guests are staying at Saratoga Springs (Bay Lake was all booked up :guilty:)

Some times we go to Chef Mickeys for a meal which is right next door to you. When the time gets closer maybe we can exchange cell numbers (if you have a cell) and can call each other one day and have a quick meet. It would just depend on what each of us is doing on those days. But I have met up with people many times at the parks before a cruise.
Give it some thought and we can discuss it closer ot the cruise.:thumbsup2

Kathy

Wow Kathy! Nice to meet to you :) My name is Danielle, and I will be traveling with my DH & DD, Bella, who will be 7 at the time. Thanks for all the tips!

I've been seeing all of the threads about FE's and am confused. I can't promise I will participate, this is our first cruise neve mind one on DCL and I am quite overwhelmed. But if you could explain it, that would be great. Sounds like you'll definately be an asset to this thread, it needs some perking up.

What excursions do you recommend?

OK, first I will try to explain the FE.
There is a small metal fish outside your cabin door. It is a note holder.
A FE is called a Fish Extender which is like a bill orgainiser or shoe holder that you make or buy that you hang from that little fish by your door. In other words, small pockets to put thing sin that hangs down.

This thread show you how to make a FE.
http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=30302583&postcount=609

If you scroll through this thread it has some photos of some FE's tha tpeople have made.

Now you dont have to be that fancy. Many just take a disney themed shopping bag and use the handles to pay over the fish to hang it up. Some get a while shopping bag and let the kids decorate it with Disney stickers or how ever they want to decorate.
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1219607

Now only those who want to participate will ahve these and you will be given a list with their names nad cabin numbers on it. You will put a small inexpensive gift in their FE sometime during the cruise and in return they will do the same for you. Kids especially like to come back to the room and look into the FE pockets to see what gift might be waiting for them.:goodvibes

Some people gift one gift per cabin. Others like to give a gift , plus something special for the kids in the room. That is up to each person to decide.

This is meant to NOT cost much, be small in size so people can put in their suitcases easily to take home and not breakable. or to eat.
Many make home made items which are great and with some items the kids can even help make things and help deliver them.

Some items we have received in the past have been: Disney themed book makers, Disney themed post cards, Disney themed pencils and pens, crazy straws, neon glow bracelets or necklaces, all kinds of candies, gun and pre packaged cookies. Home made CD with tropical songs or disney songs from various movies (people burned them off themselves). Small home made cook book and photo album, post it notes, rubber duckies. pirate eye patches.

You get the idea. Many who dont have room in their luggage just buy something on board to give. They do have 12 packs of themed pencils, eye patches, post cards and candies on board.

This is all in good fun, not meant to *** tmuch, just an added perk to the cruise and it really is fun to find some little something in your FE when you return to your room.

Hope that answers your question.

Next post will be excursions,
Kathy

Ok Danielle, let me think about excursions.

I don't know what you like or if you swim or if your DD swims or i theres a fear of heights etc... so I will just say alittle about a few excursions we have done that a 7 year old could do too.

First in case you dont know all beaches are clothing optional in these islands. (NOT CC) Mickey won't allow that:lmao:
We save our beach day for CC. so havnt really done beaches on St.Thoams or St. Maartin. These excursions are for both islands, just have tolook them up to see which place they are. I have done so many I may get them mixe dup if I say which island each one is. If i know for usre I will tell you.

The butterfly farm tour on both islands is a huge hit for kids. Some butterflies are huge and all are colorful. They love to land on you so you get a good close look. Plus a short shopping stop. This tour is short enough you have plenty of time for shopping later in the day.

Under 2 flags island tour is nice with some awesome high up views. But the drivers are all nuts!! Be prepared for a wild ride like an amusement park ride:lmao: It is alot of riding, so kids might be bored. But the views are great.

www.coralworld.com
Coral word with the semi sub is great for kids. Its basically lots of aquarium exhibits. some inside and some outside. A huge area full of iguanas you think is just trees until you get a close look. Your group will split. Half does the semi subwhile the rest to the exhibits then reverse rolls. Snacks available for a few bucks. They have a small under water observatory you can go in to see fish under the ocean. some days you see morefish than others according to how clear the water is.

Same on the semi sub. Some days you will see more than others. But they do have a scuba diver who will feed the fish and draw some close. He goes all the way around the sub so everyone will get a good view no matter where they are sitting. It is large inside so no worries about feeling closed in. This is a great one for kids.

The paradise tram is a great thing to do too if you have no fear of heights. We will be tendering so wher eyou get off the tender boat there is a free shuttle to thea shopping area,s oemthing like Haven??? cant think of the name. Anyway take the free shuttle there and then walk to the endof the shopping area and right across the street is the tram. You will drive right past it on the shuttle,so watch for it. Or you can pay for a taxi but its just as easy to get there for free. They have a bird who at the top, plus a restaurant and short walking trail for the view.

I can think of the name, something like Sea and See island tour. You do a bus tour then a boat tour and shopping before returning on the bost then the bus back to the ship. The boat had free refreshemnts , of course there is a tip jar. If you do this sit on top of the boat because there is live entertainment up there. He will go down too but mostly is upstairs. Good singer and funny too.

St. Maartin once you get off the dock you can walk over to a water taxi on the left. Pay for round trip wrist band. Its a 5 minute ride ot shopping area. Where you get off to shop there is a nice beach to the left and right of the dock. You can see the ship from there. Most seem to have their clothes on there. It is a public beach but they rent umbrellas and chairs there.

It's nice to relax by the water, sip on a drink or pop for a bit enjoy the warm water then walk right into the shopping area that is just behind you. Also restaurants are on the water front. This is a quiet area to relax and enjoy the view and its cheap. Just the price of a water taxi and an umbrella or chair.

St. Johns eco hike is nice too, if you want to be active. Its actually a pretty easy hike and they go slow. Great guide too. plus a 20 minute swim break towards the end of the hile. They do give you some water too. The ONLY bathroom is where you meet for the hike. Te view is nice and you ge tlots of intersting historical facts along the way.

The St. Johns island tour is nice too. You ride in an open air safari bus and tour the island. Lots of great views to see along the way. several stops for photo taking. The entire island is a preserve.

Blackbeards tour was fun but I dont think they have it any more.

12 Metre regetta is a thriller but I dont know tha tyour DD could do it. Your taught how to run this world class sailing ship and you do it. Lots of hard work but lots of fun too.
My grandson was too small (small for his age) so he was the captains helper but it did scare im because the ship tilts a lot. They have small wooden slats to brace your feet against, better doit or you willslide across the deck!!

I will go and look at excursions today to see what has changed or if they have changed the names. That will help me to remember. So some of these may have new names. One thing for sure there s plenty to choose from.

We are still debating on what to do before the cruise. We are not planning on any parks but we are debating on flying down Friday morning and staying at a hotel near PC or Flying down Thursday morning ans stay at a WDW resort and go to Downtown Disney one night and relax at the pools then driving to the port on Saturday morning.

Flying down on Friday we would not get to a hotel until 11-12 so I do not know if its worth it to stay at a WDW hotel for a pool for 4 hours.

If you stay near or at the Radisson Hotel at Cocoa beach you can walk to a manatee preserve and observe them swimming in the ocean. They have nice clean restrooms too and a few picnic tables to sit at.
I cant think of the name of the road its on but I could probably find it if your interested. I know its close, maybe 10 or 12 blocks from the Radisson.
Its free and something different to do, then enjoy the pool where ever your staying at the port.

Or if your budget allows and you have a rental car Nasa isnt far and the Astronauts Hall of fame is also close by and both would fill an entire day of fun.

Of course there is always the beach there too but it can get a bit crowded in the fall when the humidity is gone and the weather is nice.

Have fun deciding what to do.

I just sent you a PM thinking you were someone who posted earlier so please just ignore it.;)

I have sent PM's out to everyone I could find on this thread who hasn't posted in awhile in hopes of getting them to post if they are still coming and to see who is interested in doing a FE.

Trying to get this thread moving!!!:thumbsup2

Plus Greg and I.
So thats 4 families to start.:woohoo:

I am hoping over the weekend to hear back from more on this thread and I know more will join us before the cruise.

Anybody pick out excursions yet?

I was going to look at them yesterday but got busy with other stuff.
So will look this weekend when Greg can look at the same time.

We have done many excursions there before. Hope there is something new for us to do.

Back later today, right now my dirty breakfast dishes are calling my name,

Kathy

Heather we have 2 kids also staying home in Pet care.
I always miss them so much when we cruise.
My kids are a mix, boxer and boston terrier named Minnie after Minnie mouse because she is black and white. About 75 pounds. She is 6 years old and a rescue dog.

Pixie doodle is half Grey hound and half golden lab, also rescued. She just turned 4. Pixie is around 90 pounds, I think?

Tell me about your kids?
Any photos to share??

Kathy

I haven't checked this thread for a while and it's nice to see so much activity!
Congratulations, Kathleen on your upcoming wedding! How exciting!
My DH and I are empty nesters and have not cruised DCL since 1998 (!) We are DVC members and decided to use points for this cruise since we're not planning a trip to WDW until late 2012. We are looking forward to it very much!
Kathy, thank you for the information on the FE-I am a disaster when it comes to crafty things-but it does look like alot of fun! I will read some more of the information-when do you know how many people will participate? Will you set a deadline?
