November 5th 2011 Eastern on the Magic

We are doing the Magen's Bay Beach Break. I like the idea of a 25 minute ride to get there and having a chair reserved for us. We will see some of the island. I know we could do it much cheaper ourselves, but I do not want to worry about traffic, cabs not coming back for us. I think because it's our first trip to the Caribbean we are taking things a little slow! We've been to Mexico twice and the second trip we did so much more and had a lot more confidence in where we were going and what we were doing! You and your husband would probably make good tour guides after so many cruises! Your advice has been really useful these past couple of weeks.

Hi! I was told by DCL that Brandon can go between the Edge and the Oceaneer Lab since his b-day is that week. He turns 11 Nov 8. I think they said any age with in a month can go between them. I think the lab will have more structured things to do, but I'm not really sure what they do at the Edge.

Brandon loves planes also. He especially likes the old fighter planes right now (ie. B-52s, P-51s, etc.) He likes flight sim also and the Wii airplane games. I'm going to ask him if he has "flown" into St. Maarten. My DH is a pilot so I'm sure there is some influence there. I don't know if they will really push to go to Maho Beach but I know they are talking about it.

My idea of a good day is Shopping! Not a good idea to my son! :sad1: lol He hates shopping. I'm wondering how much a cab would be after shopping to run over and back. Please let me know if you get any more info on the time the planes come in or the tour.

Oh, cool! I'm glad we're not the only ones who are interested in going to Maho beach, and you said your husband and son are mostly interested?? How old is your son? Is he interested in flying? What a crazy story you have from last time you were there and rented a jeep! Glad the locals were so nice and helpful and you made it back to the ship in time!

We are definitely going to make our way over to Maho beach. I talked to my DH tonight and told him about the discussion I had on this board about getting to Maho beach, and he agrees with me that we'll be going with Benard's Tours and we won't be doing the rental car thing. He wants to do a private tour, but I need to call and see how much $$ that is. We'll see.... but this way, we can stop at other beaches. The standard group tour Bernards does stops at Orient Beach, but they stop at the Clothing Optional part of the beach. We went to that beach last time we were at St. Maarten not realizing it was a nude beach (optional nude beach), and did have a great time in the sand and water, but our boys saw a BIT too much, in my opinion since it's a clothing optional beach! :scared1:). So, we'd like to make it to a clothing required beach this next time, and if we did a private tour with Bernards, they could take us to clothing required beach :rotfl: in the morning before Maho Beach.

Anyway, the main priority is to make it to Maho Beach and watch the planes. My son (and all of us) have seen the You Tube videos as well as watched on I think the Travel Channel a show called "Most Extreme Airports in the world", and St. Maarten airport was like #2 out of the top 10 most extreme... apparently, it's a pretty tricky airport to fly into!

My son has a flight simulator he uses on our computer, and LOVES to "fly" with that... he seriously wants to be a pilot when he grows up. So, we'll see! So, he has "flown" into St. Maarten with his flight simulator, so he is excited to be there in real life.

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure of the times when the heavy's fly in, but I definitely know it's the afternoon... I think I've just heard it's like 2 or 3 PM. It's definitely in the afternoon, though, when the big ones arrive and take off. But, honestly, I think even seeing a smaller jet fly 200 feet above your head would be just as trilling!! :) But, we'll for sure do our best to be there when a 747 flys in and/or takes off. Just hoping we can make it back to the ship in time before we watch the ship take off from a distance! That would end up being a VERY expensive excursion because we'd all be buying 1 way tickets on the spot to St. Thomas! haha. But, I know that won't happen if we take this Bernards Tours.... I've read up on them even on Trip Advisor, and they have excellent reviews, and I have not read one report where someone missed their ship with them. So, I feel good about booking through them.

I looked at this site right away for our cabin. Unfortunately, it wasn't reviewed yet.:sad2:

I guess I could do it when we get back.

Thank you for the info.
If anyone is interested you can go to this site and read reviews on cabins on the ships. So if you know your cabin number you can look it up and see if anybody has written a review about it.

Wow, that is so cool your son, Brandon, loves planes also, and he likes the Flight Simulator, and Wii airplane games... sounds just like my son, Tyler. And, Tyler turns 11 on Nov 3. Brandon and Tyler will definitely have to meet... I just told Tyler about Brandon, and he is very excited to meet him!

That is great that you found out the brand new 11 year olds can go between the Lab and the Edge. I posted a question about that on the main forum, and from the responses I've gotten so far, it sounds like the Edge is a good experience. But, it's nice to know they can go to the Lab, too, if they want.

Does your husband fly commercial airplanes? That is Tyler's dream.... to be a commercial airline pilot. :) My dad is a Harbor Pilot (pilots that take ships and cruise ships in and out of the harbors), and Tyler is very close to his grandpa... even though my dad is not an airline pilot, I think Harbor Pilot or Airline Pilot... they both have the "pilot" gene, so I think that is where my son gets it from.

I have no idea how much a cab is to get to the shopping area of St. Maarten, but I'm sure there is someone here who can answer that...

What grade is Brandon going into? 5th? Tyler is going into 5th this year.

Take care,
Kathy

Hi!

Please let me know if you get any more info on the time the planes come in or the tour.

Here are two sites that tell a lot about Maho Beach, and the first one says the 747's usually land about 2:00 PM and take off around 4:00 PM... but both sites say the best time to hit Maho beach is between 1:30 pm- 5:00 pm.

http://www.sint-maarten.net/St-Maarten-Beaches/MahoBay.html

http://www.vacationideas.me/caribbean/maho-beach-st-marteen-planes-landing-head/

At St. Maarten, we have to be back on board the ship BY 6:30 PM, so I'm guessing if you stay at Maho Beach until 4:00 to watch at least one 747 take off, you should make it back by 6:30... I can't imagine it'd take more than 2 1/2 hours to get from the airport to the Port... BUT, when I call Bernards Tours, they will know. If we miss seeing the 747's take off, no big deal... We'll for sure get to see them land because we'll for sure be able to be at the beach at 2 PM no problem. But, we'll be seeing smaller jets (737's, etc) take off if staying until 4 PM is too risky.

Once I call Bernards, I'll post here what info I found out. I probably won't call them until next week because we are going out of town this Thursday - Sunday, and tomorrow is a super crazy day for me. But, I'll get to calling them as soon as possible. I do know the group tour is $40/pp, so for a family of 4, the group tour will be $160.00 (then I'm sure people tip a little). So, my guess is a private tour would be like $250 - $300. Just a guess on my part...

Brandon is going into fifth grade also. I told him about Tyler and he also thinks that is cool that he likes planes. He wants to fly into St. Maarten on flight sim now. Brandon is shy when he first meets people but once he gets going he is very social.

My husband, Craig, flys commercially. He flys private charters (lear jets and falcons). I know Brandon wants to be a pilot but he also wants to drive a monorail at Disney World. I don't know which one will win out.

That is really cool your Dad is a habor pilot. Now I think that would be a neat job.

Take care,
Lyn

St.Maarten taxi to the shopping is a water taxi. I'm sure you can hail a regular taxi too.

The water taxi is located at the end of the pier on the left. You can see the sign from the end of the dock, its like 2 minute walk. It was $5 per person round trip last time we went, so it may be a bit more now. I know you could go back and forth all day long with that if you wanted.

The water taxi's run constantly all day, and the ride is about 5 minutes. They are large boats so many can go at once.

I know some people take the road and walk to shopping which takes about 15 minutes but I wouldn't feel safe doing that. The area is industrial and many barren places.

I don't know what a land taxi would cost. But I remember seeing a few taxi's behind a store behind the St. Maartin sign at the end of the pier.

Ok, I'm going to try to post pictures here. I'm following Kathy's instructions. :) So, bear with me if thisi doesn't work.

This is a picture of us all in our formal attire (this was not on the Disney Ship, but my DH's 40th b-day party last Christmas (his b-day is Dec 17), but this is our "formal" attire for formal night on the ship... believe me, we normally do not look like this in ever day life! :rotfl: My youngest, Ryan - 9 yrs old, is the red head, and our oldest Tyler who will be 11 by the cruise, is the other little boy). They are 21 months apart in age.

This is all of us getting ready to get off the ship after our Panama Canal Cruise (which was totally an amazing cruise) and we were in LA... all bundled up because it was a chilly 60 degrees! :) Our whole cruise had been mostly in the 80's and 90's!

Then, this is our pirate attire for pirate night (this was on our Panama Canal cruise). My MIL made my boy's and my DH's outfit. I just use my pirate micky ears, and call it good. :) :)

But, pirate night is always very fun!

GREAT PHOTOS!!!

Nice looking family. Its so nice to have the formal photo, then regular dress, then fun pirate outfits. I think you have the bases covered :thumbsup2

Glad my instructions worked for both of you or I would be in BIG trouble:rolleyes1

Hope more people will follow and post family photos.
I love seeing everyone.
This is great,

Kathy

It sounds like Brandon is a lot like Tyler. Tyler is also shy when he firsts meets people, but then is social after the initial meeting. I'm sure they will enjoy meeting. :)

Thanks, Kathy. :) Yes, your instructions were much easier than I expected. I'm not terribly technically savvy, so I always assume stuff like posting photos on sites like this is complicated. But, it was very easy. Yes, I thought I'd cover all bases of a disney cruise... formal, pirate pirate: and normal every day look... we are pretty down to earth casual people for the most part... typical pacific northwesterners (as you would know being a pacific northwesterner yourself!)

I was just reading back through all the posts written from the beginning (I haven't had time to do that yet, but found time tonight), and I'm amazed how many celebrations will be happening in this group during the cruise! A wedding, anniversary, birthdays... lots of people will be celebrating. :dance3:

Anyway, yet another reason to look so forward to this cruise. :)

OK here is my try....lol If this works I will see if I have a pic of myself...

OK so we will need to bring a portable first aid kit for some travellers...LOL
Nice to meet you Danielle; Meghan who will be 6 at the cruise is wanting to try the Club/Lab and same with my nefew.

Love Meghan's hair! She looks like she likes to have fun :)

I'll try to post some pics, but I don't have any recent ones of me. I will after this weekend though.

Danielle

Kathy-LoveToRun: Love your pics too! The costumes are great! I'm going to see what I can find at Halloween time.

BTW, My DD's middle name is Kathleen! So funny!

Hi! I was told by DCL that Brandon can go between the Edge and the Oceaneer Lab since his b-day is that week.

We were on the Dream in May and DD turned 11 in June. She really did not like the Lab. It was extremely young. (When we went to turn in her wristband, they were having storytime and there were about 30 to 40 kids on the floor and none of them looked over 7 or 8.)

When I took her to the Edge to ask about bumping up, the CM had a list of all 10 year olds on the ship (not just those with upcoming birthdays). She was allowed in with no problem. I think they might be trying out a few different things with the clubs. Seeing how many people ask to move up, etc. 3 to 10 is a massive age range. Some (not all) 10 year olds would be much better off in a 10-13 group.

Good morning ladies,

Hope everyone is having a good day so far.
It's only 52 degrees this morning :cold:

They say it will warm up to 80 today, but i won't believe it until it happens.
Our nights have been cold like winter time here lately. Makes me want a warm tropical cruise even more!!

Sounds like Kathleen is the popular name this cruise. I have been on cruises where we had 3 Greg's and I think 4 Jim's, counting kids names too.

I am looking forward to seeing more photos this weekend.

Back this afternoon to see what's cooking here today. I will try to post more cruise photo's soon.

Kathy

Good Morning All,
Great to see more pictures, wow 21 months a part...

Meghan loves coloring her hair different colors... She is a girly girl. Sean is like the other boys, planes, trains and automobile type of kid. Hopefully more pictures will be posted, love to see everyone.

I can't book any excursions till August 22 (boo!) Still all new to this... Plus I am a little sad that we got second seating for dinner as it was booked the first seating... Help any idea what we can do, don't think my kids will want to eat at 8:15p... I am a little upset at this...

As for the kid labs, hope my kids like it... I don't think they will want to stay if it is too young either...

For the FE my sister (darcie) and Dennis's(5) cabin number is 6315
Thanks for listening... LOL
Tanya

Tanya,

when you check in the give you a Welcome aboard paper and on that paper there is a time and a club listed to go to for trying to change dining times and to make Palos reservations.
Many people want to change times. So they do try and change you.

Go there right away and they will take your information and if at all possible they will get you changed. We have been changed on the spot and also had to wait for a phone message which came the 2nd day. So far we have been changed all but once, I think.

We will be doing this too. We want first seating too.
If you dont get it, if you want (hope they still do this) all but the first and last night they turn the buffet into a sit down restaurant. Salad bar is self serve.
You have a smaller menu but a good one you order from. Its faster and quieter than the other restaurants. These are waiters in training so they are watched carefully to insure good service. They are usually not as chatty since they are learning but we had good service and food everytime.
It use to be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You just show up.

Of course there is room service and foods around the pool. Worse case, maybe feed the kids form those and let them go to the clubs while your in eating late. Just an idea.

DD10 is concerned about it being too young and being able to possibly move up if necessary is great.
