My DS15 makes a comment about those novelty donut makers everytime we see them. I would like "Santa" to surprise him with one this year.

Does anyone have one of these? If so, what brand do you have? I would love some recommendations on which kind to buy. And if anyone has any donut recipes, that would be awesome!

I have read you can use cake mix, and you should use a ziplock bag to pipe the batter into the molds. Any other suggestions?

I know these will not taste like bakery donuts, but I still think my DS would enjoy it.

Thanks for your help!!

Sorry no real help.

I know these will not taste like bakery donuts, but I still think my DS would enjoy it.

They will taste like cupcakes, shaped like donuts.

My daughter has a mini-cupcake maker and she has only used it once. It is just as easy to make "real" ones as it is to use the cupcake maker.

I just bought a BabyCakes brand mini donut maker at WalMart for $ 9.98. It's adorable!! (ours only had it in yellow)

we bought the one from Kohls last year, I think it was also the Baby cakes brand? it was yellow and we have used it a lot!! When we get desperate, we do use cake mix. The recipes taste more like donuts than does the cake mix.. It comes with a little recipe book and we have made the apple ones, the pumpkin ones, and the sour cream ones. If you do buy it, definitely stock on on ingredients. I believe Kohls also has the boxed mixes...I think the odd recipe ingredient (that we never have) was buttermilk and we seldom have sour cream in stock, so I would buy those. Also cinnamon and sugar, powdered sugar..We do use it often, twice a month? and its easy for my 12 year olds to use, but they get eaten TOOO fast, so in our house, you have to claim them before they cook..lol

I got the one from Macy's last year. It never worked correctly. I would either get cooked donuts with a raw center or done insides with a burnt outside.

I was so disappointed in it. I tried a few recipes but gave up after a while.

We absolutely hate ours. It is Babycakes. They never taste like donuts. They are very difficult and messy to make. They take forever to do a batch. No matter what recipe or cake mix we used they were terrible. Your son would have to be very patient and very tolerant if they did not have the right consistency or flavor of a donut.

I had one quite a while ago so this is to be taken into consideration, but the doughnuts were awful!! They didn't taste like donuts at all. It was awkward to use and took up a lot of space in the cabinet so I got rid of it pretty quickly. I have gotten several years' worth of good out of the box though as it now holds Christmas ornaments.

Honestly, I think most of those kinds of gadgets are just gimmicks and aren't worth the money.

I have two of the Wilton donut pans and love them! I just use bread mix or a muffin recipe and place it in the pan. Then I dip in butter and a cinnamon sugar mixture. Yum!

Bought one and HATED it. Messy, hard to clean and the donuts were AWFUL.

OTH - I bought a donut mix basket from Duck Donuts. Fired up the fry pan w/a little oil, used a cookie scooper to make donut holes. They were AMAZING. They tasted just like you get at Duck Donuts. :cool1:

Is it run by the guy of Duck Dynasty? :)

I have never heard of Duck Donuts, must be a local / regional place.

Its a chain of donut stores in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They started in Duck, NC but they have stores in Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and they also have a store in Virginia - Williamsburg, I think. The donuts are amazing. Made to order. Piping hot with a huge choice of toppings in all kinds of crazy combinations. http://duckdonuts.com/
