Novel-type bible?

Please no flames or disrespect if you choose to respond to this thread.

I am searching for a way to read the bible and Jesus's story without actually reading the bible. I have a difficult time interpreting the language that is used in the bible and I'm looking to read the stories in more of a novel-type/story version. Not a children's version, because I do not want it to be vague or leave things out. I am Jewish and I'm not interested in converting or anything like that, just interested in reading all of the stories/the life of Jesus for my own personal education.

Any advice or books that you might suggest?

I was thinking of renting a movie, but most that I have come across are pretty graphic violence and I have a real hard time concentrating and sitting through a movie with alot of graphic violence.

Thank you in advance.:)

There's actually a book called "The Story" published by Zondervan. I've not read it but it's exactly what you are describing.

I asked a friend for a similar recommendation a few months ago, and she recommended Teacher, Guide, Companion by Erik Walker Wilstrom. I think it is aimed more at putting the teachings in context with today's world. It's on my summer reading list.

You might also try The Message, its a different version of the bible written in modern language.

Try the NIV version of the Bible. I call it my easy reader. I use it all the time when I get hung up in the language which happens quite a lot. :thumbsup2

This is what I was about to suggest.

I don't know if you've heard of Bible Gateway, but they have quite a few versions you can read online for free. It's a good way to get a feel for which translation might work for you!

I don't know if I'm allowed to link to it, but if you Google "Bible Gateway" it should come right up!:goodvibes

THANK YOU! I was following this thread and I googled that site...I am now able to find a version that works for me...Thanks sooooo much

Thank you for all of the helpful replies!! :) I am going to look into these and see which one suits me best. I watch alot of religion-related documentaries on Netflix and the History Channel (archeological related), but as a Jew, I was never formally taught about the stories beyond the old testament, so it would be helpful to know the stories these people are referring to in their documentaries!

To be honest, my DH warned me that I might get some not-so-nice replies from people looking too much into my simple question, and I am so grateful that everyone has been so nice and helpful! Thank you again:flower3:

I agree....it's a paraphrase, but it's my "go-to" when I need things explained in plain language. I actually use three Bibles at a time when I am preparing lessons for my 6th grade girls small group!

Try the first four books of the New Testament: the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They are genuinely easy reading --no difficult language, no prophecy, etc. Just a first hand account of Jesus' years of ministry from the men who walked alongside him.

They're not the same. Some topics they all cover, other events are mentioned only by one man. Luke, called the beloved physician, was more educated and it shows in his writing. Matthew was a former tax collector, so he would've been hated by the people, and that viewpoint shows in his narrative.

I like the NIV version but not The Message, which is too casual and loses the beauty of the language completely.
