Hi to our friends both new and old who are expecting another trip report from this elderly woman. My name is Mary and my husband's name is Glenn. We took our first cruise last January - a 4 day on the Wonder. We quickly decided we needed to do a 7 day on the Magic. We used the excuse that it would be a great way to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversay. It just happens we chose the Eastern cruise that encountered those very big waves - sailed on the 8th and returned on the 15th. Fortunately, it was not a problem for us except for the claw marks we left on the walls when hand rails were not available. It was truly an adventure but didn't interfere with us having a wonderful time. And for those of you that didn't go to the All Aboard show the first night, we were told by performer John Charles that Disney ships are the safest in the industry. You might ask "How come?" That question could have been asked by our new friend Leah from Wisconsin. She believes that phrase is only used in Wisconsin but I heard it as a child in Oklahoma too. The answer is - Disney cruise ships are on tracks. They never leave Port Canavarel and operate on a giant lazy susan brilliantly designed by Imagineers for maximum effect as that lazy susan is turned from one exciting scene to the next exciting scene. They did an amazing job with that huge wave segment. But I knew we were only in 4 feet of water and could have walked to shore if necessary with a child on our shoulders. So no worries. I told Glenn and myself many times during that day and night - it's okay - we are on tracks.

I'm hoping Debbie has registered (she is a lurker) but promised she would register because I will likely talk about her and she needs to be able to defend herself. She and her 2 teen daughters were our dining mates along with George and Marsha from Pearland, Tx. which is next door to Alvin where our daughter Aprille and her husband Marty live. Small World huh. I'm sure we will be hearing from Aprille soon. George is going to be my spell checker so I'm really sure we will hear from him from time to time.

I have lots of pictures but it's unclear whether or not anyone will ever see them. I managed to unload them into a folder on My Pictures but have not been successful in uploading them to Photobucket. Aprille gave me some brief and confusing instructions when she was here for Thanksgiving. I will keep trying.

Okay I really am going to write a report. It started at the airport in Amarillo Tx. and I only mention that because we met a man nearly as old as Glenn who had also served in WWII. I make Glenn wear his WWII hat because we meet so many neat people when they see that hat. It also indicated he served in a submarine. The gentleman we met that morning came over to visit just a minute but left me laughing. He asked if we knew how many different kinds of ships there are in the Navy. I confessed to being ignorant of that fact. He smiled and held up 2 fingers. There are only 2 he said -"submarines and moving targets and I was on a moving target". Loved it.

Amarillo has a small airport and was almost a ghost town on Friday morning. We were soon in the air and on our way to Houston. Must confess that I always dread changing planes in Houston. But this time it was a breeze. We were met with a wheel chair and tag teamed to another terminal and right to our departure gate. A nice lady pushed us to a certain point then turned us over to Jacque (who was named for his Uncle Jack who was killed in France during WWII hence the French version of Jack). See what I mean about that hat? Jacque helped load Glenn into a waiting cart and we were soon let off at our gate. The cart driver quickly jumped down to help Glenn off the cart and even found seats for us in the waiting area. I quickly hurried to a shop where I found some Nutter Butter cookies for Glenn. His Aunt Jemima Pancake Breakfast Sandwich was a distant memory. We only had a short wait until time to board and were soon on our way to Orlando. We were met by a wheel chair and I asked if we could just take it as we were heading for the Hyatt hotel where we would spend the night. She was reluctant at first and started looking for her supervisor but decided it would be okay provided I was able to push it. Must say there was general concern for me all along the way. They all seemed to think I should have a wheel chair too. But I managed to smile and say "no". It really isn't a long walk to the hotel and we were soon checking in. I asked for valet service to pick up our bags and glady paid $10 for that to happen.

I'm only going to tell one more adventure and then get on to the cruise. We were really hungry by now and decided to eat at McCoys Bar and Grill in the hotel. It was actually pretty neat - quite elegant for "casual dining" or so I thought but then I'm a very small town type. And this is where I accidentally ate a scallop. Nothing against scallops but that is a food that I have avoided all my life - just a quirk I have. I ordered something called Travelers Trio and had to pick 3 items from a list of about 30 or so. I finally decided on giant onion rings, BBQ shrimp pizza and lemon hummus. We waited and gawked and saw a waiter carrying two 3 tiered thingees which I thought must be dessert trays. Imagine my surprise when I saw him sit them down in front of 2 people at a nearby table. I quickly figured out that I would be getting one of those thingees. When mine arrived I could quickly see there was an error. I decided to keep what I got - 2 were correct but my hummus looked more like fish wrapped in bacon resting on some delicious looking bread with capers sprinkled about. I had eaten about half of whatever it was when I realized I was most likely eating a scallop. I called our waiter over and he was horrified that a mistake had been made. I was indeed eating a scallop and he wanted to bring me the hummus but I decined. I was only able to eat about half of each offereing anyway and I was full. I felt bad that Dan was so upset. The food was delivered by a "stringer" (waiter in training) and he would speak to him about the difference between scallops and hummus.

We returned to our room and soon had a call from bellman Danny that he had our bags and would bring them right up - which he did. I also needed help with the ceiling fan and a list of TV channels available. Don't know why I needed that as we were much too tired to watch TV. I surely am running on and on but I did want to tell folks how much we enjoy spending the night at the airport and then putting our tagged luggage outside our door and reporting to the Disney folks in the lobby the next morning. They have moved to a larger area in the lobby. We didn't have long to wait and were soon in the executive elevator down to the parking garage. Now this is the really neat part. There was a DCL bus waiting for us just outside the parking area. This bus was for those staying at the Hyatt only. As we pulled away the driver was calling for another bus to take his place. It's a pleasant drive to the ship and goes by quickly.

Okay that's it for now. Tomorrow I will get to the cruise part. We met the neatest group of Diser's in the terminal. Will tell you all about it tomorrow.

Aprille, Susie and Aaron - are your out there?

Oh my goodness no that wasn't us. I wasn't going to mention it until later but we didn't even get off at Castaway. We had planned to but were too tired. We had a good time on the ship though which I will tell you all about in a later episode.

Welcome to my report Susie. For everyone's info, Susie and Aaron were our Pixie Dust table mates on our January cruise. They are special.

We're so glad we found your report. George said you are doing a great job spelling!!!!!!!

Can't wait to hear more.:thumbsup2

George & Marsha

I'm back as promised but typing in the dark so as not to wake Glenn. My computer is in the bedroom but he can sleep through most anything which is good. First, apologies to Suzanne. I have corrected that post and I DO remember her. She posted several times on my other trip report. And welcome to two of our table mates - Marsha and George. I got an email from them and George said I was doing fine with my spelling. "Fine" works for me.

So now we are parked at the port behind 2 other DCL busses. By the way I counted DCL busses returning to Orlando and there were 9 so we knew there would be lots of people ahead of us but no worries. We arrived about 10:30 I think and a wheel chair was waiting for Glenn. It was interesting that the bus in front of us had it's storage doors wide open and waiting. We saw a few young people with lots of luggage come and put their luggage in. It took a moment to figure out why they were doing this chore themselves but I do believe they were crew members leaving the ship either for their two months off or maybe transferring to the Wonder or maybe just leaving. The security line was long but a lovely lady insisted we go ahead of her and her group. Age, wheel chairs, and WWII hats seem to cause people to treat you really well. Sometimes I feel a little embarrassed but I also really appreciate how well we are treated. We got through security quickly. The gentleman that examined Glenn (he wears a pacemaker and can't go through the security gate) told us the elderly gentleman taking carryons and pushing them through Xray was also a WWII Vet. How great is that? We were greeted upstairs by a lady wearing a red Mickey glove. I must say this startled Glenn a bit as he was expecting a while glove but he took it well with a happy smile on his face. I had filled out all my papers correctly so we were soon in line with other Castaway Cay members. When it was our turn, the gentleman was a little confused about my legal name which rather surprised and startled me. It seems I am Mary J. T some of the time and Mary Jo T some of the time and Mary Shaw T some of the time and just Mary T some of the time. He had me quite confused as to who I really am. But another problem reared it's ugly head as well. I was quite excited to try the new onboard airline checkin on departure and was given a form by the Disney folks at the hotel. I had it all filled out except for flight number. I didn't bring a printout of my airline info and they HAD to have a flight number for departure. He worried and asked others for help but it seems you really do have to have that flight number and his suggestion was to go to Guest Services after we boarded. He forgot to give us our CC lanyards but no problem. I got back in line and a nice lady standing guard at the counter reached over and gathered up a couple and we were on our way.

We saw several groups with lime green shirts on. I recognized one family of four that had been in McCoys Bar and Grill the same time we were but there were others. I particularly noticed a rather large group - probably a dozen - because there were two really cute kids in that group. One was a tiny Tinkerbell who kept trying to fly away but was always scooped up by a much larger person in a lime green shirt and whisked back to the group. The other was a little guy in an oversized shirt that reached the floor and hung off of one little shoulder. I fear I may have looked like a stalker as I watched those kids and whisked out my camera many times with little success. I finally followed the little guy and his Mom into an area that wasn't crowded and asked if I could take his picture. So I have a great shot of him and would love to show it to you but maybe later when I figure out how to upload. I will tell you more about the tiny Tinkerbell after I tell you about the wheel chair police incident.

This polite but firm lady approached us to explain we couldn't keep the wheel chair because it had a red pole on it. She explained that we could rent a wheel chair on board. I hadn't intended to keep the wheel chair but did expect we could go on board with it. We had already decided Glenn would walk while on board because wheel chairs are a bit awkward to push around on the ship and his Podiatrist is urging him to walk as much as he can. But for some reason I felt a naughty urge to tweak this lady a bit. I told her we had no trouble taking a wheel chair aboard on the Wonder and no one took it away from us. She sputtered a bit and said "well of course no one would take it from you but you should have turned it in." She left but only temporarily. She returned to firmly insist that we could not take the wheel chair on board. I didn't tweak her anymore but if I had felt like being tacky I might have said something like "well, just dump him on the floor and I will try to get someone to help me drag him on board". That would have been very ugly and I'm glad I didn't do it. She was just doing her job and I know it was awkward for her. She was gracious enough to put us at the front of the line and that worked out very well. When I turned to look at the person next to me who should I see but a tiny Tinkerbell asleep on her mother's shoulder. I whisked out my camera (asked for permission) and took a great picture. Hope you get to see it before this report is over. We struck up a conversation with one of the group and I identified myself as a Diser knowing some or all of that group was too. I was introduced to none other than Mrs. Mork. I hope she posts and corrects the way I used her screen name. It was a delight to meet and greet that happy group of travelers.

Okay, I'm going to post this now and later today we will finally get onboard. I do tend to talk too much but there are so many things I want to tell you.

You are NOT talking too much! We want every juicy detail. Keep it coming! :surfweb:

P.S. Why don't you email me a couple of pictures and I'll see what I can do? Maybe start with Tinker Bell and her little buddy. :goodvibes

I figured if I whined enough Aprille would post some pictures for me. She even said email her some more so I will do that. I'm just about ready to write some more trip report but will fix Glenn some breakfast first.

:cool1: Yay!! You're back! I'll eagerly be awaiting each new post. Don't worry about 'talking' too much - I'm sure we all love all the details!! :goodvibes

I promise we will get onboard that ship right now. We are at the front of the line along with Mrs. Mork and her group and are soon being announced and applauded. I didn't have to drag Glenn after all. He was able to walk slowly and carefully which is the way he always walks. I asked if we could go to deck 9 and have hamburgers but was told they weren't serving yet except at Top Siders. That was fine but I thought I had read where some folks headed for the swimming pools and ate hamburgers. We decided to go to Parrot Cay and it was a good choice. I was able to keep Glenn to a minimum of food and it was quite good. We met server Oppie from Bali and had a good visit with him. He has been on the Magic since it's very first cruise and seemed to be a happy camper. He cheerfully told us they work 14 hours a day 7 days a week. We visited Guest Services after we ate - the first of many visits for various reasons. Nothing big. I got to where I really liked those people. They have a very difficult job and must walk on egg shells it seems. My visit this time was to see if they could help me with my missing flight number. Sergio really wanted to help and he tried but had to admit he couldn't. If Disney had handled our flights he could have. In a flash, it dawned on me that I could email for help. I had printed out the flight info for Aprille and my sister. So it was time to visit the Internet Cafe. I was a little nervous about this but Aprille assured me I could do it and I really needed to stay in touch with family so they would know we were okay. So I sat down at a computer, took a deep breath and started following instructions. It worked and I was quite excited to be looking at my own mail box and writing emails as usual - like I do every day at home. I was very pleased with myself as we headed for our stateroom. It was ready and we met Sompop from Thailand - don't you just love that name? I asked about a bath mat and a bath bench and he said he would check. He also politely mentioned that if we had included that in our reservation we would already have them. That made a lot of sense I must say. We went on into the room and there were our Castaway gifts spread out on the bed. I looked around a bit more and thought "Wow! Castaway really went overboard for us". There was a beautiful Christmas tree plant with tea roses, red carnations, and white shasta daisies - and little gold ornaments and a gold Mickey head ornament at the top. And that wasn't all. There was a bucket with ice and a bottle of Sparkling Apple Cider, two wine glasses and a plate of pastries. Did the rest of you get these things too? Okay, I'm teasing you. The plant was from Aprille and the Cider and pastries were from Susie and Aaron. They were Bon Voyage and wedding anniversary gifts. I started taking pictures and reading cards and found another card from Susie and Aaron that they were treating us to our evening at Palo. Talk about overwhelmed. We were truly overwhelmed and teary eyed. I will email pictures to Aprille and she can post them probably tomorrow.

We had time to unpack before the life boat drill. I thought I had cut back on the amount of clothes to bring but we soon had the closet filled up. I let Glenn do the arranging in the closet - big mistake. I rearranged so all my clothes were in one end and his in the other. I gathered the things that needed pressing and got them ready to go out that evening. We had plenty of room for our 2 bags and 2 carryon bags in the closet and plenty of drawers for everything else. Matter of fact, we had drawers left over.

We had dreaded the life boat drill ever since we planned this trip. But we wasted a lot of time worrying about something that was practically painless. We walked down the 2 flights of stairs and did well I thought. At least neither of us stumbled and fell. Our position was just outside the door and we changed places so Glenn could lean against the wall. One of the CM's was watching us it seems and we had hardly got settled when he came over, took Glenn's arm and said "you folks have been here long enough. I'm going to get you on the elevator before the crowd gets to them." And he did. He pushed the button and waited till an elevator arrived - got us on and pushed 6 for us. What a great guy. I checked my watch when we got back to the room and total time from leaving the room to returning was 11 minutes.

We got ready for dinner - actually we were already ready because we didn't even change clothes. We had time to stop by Guest Services to get tickets for the Galley tour. We didn't eat in our assigned restaurant that night and I really don't want to talk about it now. Maybe later. Nothing big or serious - it was just stupidity on my part. We went up to deck 9 but didn't want to eat at Top Siders. Glenn wanted a hamburger and that was easy enough. I wanted Pizza but couldn't find it. The lady that fixed the burger took me around a corner and pointed so I headed that way and found the pizza place but it was dark and nothing was baking in those ovens. The bar at the other end was open but they didn't have any pizza. I wandered around till I saw Goofey's Galley. I got a roast beef sandwich that was pretty good. I took a picture of our meal so will send that along to Aprille too. I stepped over a slice of tomato covered in mayo and there were many French fries on the deck. It was almost like they weren't expecting us. As near as I could tell, there was only one person doing cleanup. We carefully guarded our napkins and fries so they wouldn't blow away and dumped them in the proper receptacle. We wandered down to Cove Cafe but didn't really want any fancy coffee so just sat for awhile outside.

I was determined that we go to the All Aboard show and we did. It was very entertaining. That's where we saw John Charles for the first time and found out that the Disney cruise ships are on tracks, etc. I loved that guy and his music and comedy. I especially liked that he closed his performance with a rousing version of Feliz Navidad. I was happily singing along "I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas - from the bottom of my heart". It was great. Glenn enjoyed it too.

It was way past our bedtime and we hadn't had an afternoon nap so we headed for our room and fell asleep quickly. I never sleep through the night so was up several times to look out at the ocean. It's a very black looking ocean at night. I also discovered channel 12 that night and it was our most watched channel the whole trip.

Talk to you again tomorrow.

Okay people - I just checked the Navigator for the first night and it clearly tells what is open and when on deck 9. I didn't bother to check that day because didn't plan to be there.

Aprille walked me through the process by phone and I am now able to upload to Photobucket. Tomorrow I will try to move them from Photobucket to my report.

Goodnight to all. Talk to you in the morning.

...I am now able to upload to Photobucket.
Well, of course you can! I never had a doubt! :rolleyes1 ;)

Can't wait to see the next installment (hey, I'm reading this all anew along with the rest of you guys!) and see you posting your own pictures. YOU CAN DO IT! :thumbsup2 (And I'm not just saying that because I mind doing it for you or anything. :p ;))

You guys look great!!! Those are the smiles I remember from our trip together! You even met up with Mickey--:cheer2:

You're doing a great job. I love all the details--it makes it just like we are all there with you. I can't wait to read more and see more pictures tomorrow. You are way more savvy with all of the putting pictures in and quoting what others have written. I have no clue how to do any of that

Susie

Please thank your husband for ALL he did in WWII. My dad was a WWII, Korea & Viet Nam vet too! It blesses my heart to see our vets treated well!!!!

I love reading your trip report.

Waiting for me ... I'm waiting ..... I'm waiting .....:lmao:
