Over at allears-dot-net, blogger Jack Spence has a pretty good summary of Disney's park investments vs. Universal's:

“(Recently) I scanned a poll that stated Disney parks rated significantly higher in customer popularity than their competition -- by a long shot. Of the top 10 spots, 9 of them were occupied by Disney. So in that sense, Disney doesn't need to add new attractions. They can rest on their laurels.

In the past 7-10 years, Disney has spent a lot of money. First, they "fixed" Disney California Adventure by spending $1.1 billion. Then they upgraded the Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland to the tune of $435 million. They added three new lands to Hong Kong Disneyland for $486 million. Aulani cost them $800 million. The company has also added several new DVCs at Walt Disney World (price unknown by me). They built two new cruise ships for around $900 million each. Disney is in the process of doubling the size of Downtown Disney in Florida. Avatar Land at the Animal Kingdom will cost around $500 million. Shanghai Disneyland will cost the company around $3.2 billion. And finally, there is the estimated $1 billion Disney is has spent to create the controversial Magic My Way wrist bands.

No other amusement park company has begun to spend that kind of money.
Instead of building new attractions (Bob Iger) has the Imagineers updating the existing attractions AND the queues. This can be seen in multiple places.

Bottom line, I think Disney is expanding -- EVERYWHERE. They are just not expanding in the way that some Disney fans think they should.”

I'm sorry, did you say that Aulani cost $800 million?! Yikes! I can't wait to see what they've done there, but that seems high? Did they have to reclaim land from the sea or something!?

Most of the discussions you see here are specifically about WDW in Orlando (the improvements to park attractions elsewhere are often cited as examples of what would be nice to see here), and specifically about park attractions (the things that you experience for the cost of admission). Disney's DVC investments and Downtown Disney changes don't really impact that, and only a fraction of the Fantasyland changes were for attractions.

I dont care about overseas parks or even CA. Or Aulani. Or cruises. And I definitely don't count DtD as something to get excited about. Excited for Avatar but its so long off that its not on my radar

and another thread I would have no problem with if it was placed on the Community Board

Oh good another thread for a US vs. WDW slap fight.

There is a Monty Python quote for everything...;) slap fest.

French Soldier: You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, you sons of a silly person. I blow my nose at you, so-called "Arthur King," you and all your silly English K-nig-hts.

They both have experience.

500 million for Avatar? :confused3

That $ could go to some amazing Star Wars attractions.

Yep. That about covers it. If someone never goes on a cruise or doesn't own DVC, why would they care? Heck, most trips we don't even make it to DTD.

You are the first person who mentioned Universal. This post is about how Disney is spending their money.

People obviously aren't following the "well-known protocol" that "I" am the one who "always" brings up Universal first. Color me disappointed. :(

Incorrect....Universal was mentioned in post #1 in direct contrast with Disney.

Well...then there is that. And the overwhelming amount of responses in this thread can pretty be much summed up as "eh".

Eh, I like both. I will always like both. In my world (and budget) what my family and I like is all that counts.

Slap fight away. The last one was enough for me.

I will only add that I couldn't care less what Disney does overseas. Somehow that doesn't affect us.
