Attended the Member update on the Magic during a cruise on 9-16 OCT. Have these random notes from that event.

- 90K families now in DVC
- Avg of 400 points per member
- There is one member that owns the max points at each resort.

Thanks for the update. We own 402 points, what is the max number of points that you can own at a DVC?

One person may own up to 2000 points per resort, so a couple could own up to 4000 points.

I thought there was also a total DVC max of 5000 points per person. So I'm a littel confused by the "one person owns the max at all resorts" statement. Didn't think that was possible since there are 7 DVC resorts.

Best wishes -

Hmmmmm, if I remember my DIS DVC Polls correctly, isn't 400 quite a bit more than the DIS average?

Remember (flashback to Junior High!) the difference between average and mean. The average of 400 points is skewed by a small number of people who own great gobs of points. The mean is almost certainly a lower number and is more likely to represent a "typical" owner.

Probably a sales ploy on the crusie to make people think they need to buy more points. Sitting there hearing that you are below average can't be a lot of fun. (Of course this is just conjecture for me).;)

I have a feeling that this applies more to the male DVC members, lol. ;)

400 average per member seems high to me as well. On the most recent poll 355 respondents indicated they owned 400 points or less while 124 indicated they owned 401 or more points. I'm familiar with the difference between mean and average but, I still think 400 is not accurate. If it was it would mean 36,000,000 points in circulation (400 average X 90,000 families).

How many points will be available combined at ALL the resorts AFTER SSR is complete? I doubt if it will be near 36,000,000.

Oh, Oh! I teach math statistics, and I always was taught that mean is the same as average. "Most common" is the mode, the one in the middle of the statistics is the median. Can someone straighten me out on this?

If you're talking about a poll here on DIS, there is no reason to believe that it would be representative of DVC members as a whole.

Regarding the math:

If one person has 5000 points and nineteen own 158, the mean, which is commonly called "average," would be 400. This is an example of how misleading the average can be, even if used accurately.

The reason is that one person can own 4500 points higher than the mean, whereas it's impossible to own more than 400 points less than the mean. This results in a few members skewing the average.

I don't think DVC lied. I'm not even sure the CM on the cruise realized how the statistic may give a false impression about how many points members actually own.

AS usual, I am way below average or mean.

OH yes...I see it now. Thanks for the clarification. I won't confuse "MEAN" and "MEDIAN" again.

400 seems high to me as well. In a sampling of 90,000 owners it would take alot of max point people to off set the average.

I like the idea of dividing the total points available and dividing by 90,000. I know the total # of points at the various resorts has been published. I have seen them. I just can't remember where. I'm sure a theoretical % of points could be worked up for SSR given the known # of bldgs vs released inventory to date. That would have to be done by someone with way more free time than me. Good luck to whoever tries to do it.

first question. Are there 90,000 individual owners? Or 90,000 contracts ? We own three contracts, are we one owner or three?
