Banks usually have one in the building at all times - it is a free service at my bank for account holders.

You can also find them at title companies, insurance offices, real estate offices, law offices and car dealerships.

In my state they can set their own price. I've seen it vary between free and $12.

We have used the notary service at our bank for free. Also, you can check with your employer as there may be someone there in the office that can do it as well.

If you have a financial planner/adviser, try their office. We notarize stuff for clients all the time at no charge. Or try your insurance agent.

My bank does it for free. Sometimes check cashing places or loan offices do it for free or just a few dollars.

If you are in the military , jag sometimes does it for nothing too.

I have gone to my bank and they notarized things for me for free after making sure I had an account there.

However, I have also used the local UPS Store. I got something notarized at 4 pm on a Saturday. They charge $5.

$5 is usually the going rate at banks, etc.

However, if you're military, you can go to any military base (JAG/Legal) and get one for free (which will always trump that $5!).

Bank's my first choice because mine does it free, but not all branches have a notary, so call first.

Also, where I live there is someone at town hall who does it for free, so call your local government office.

If you work for a small business chances are someone in accounting or administration is a notary. They notarize my documents free when needed. Otherwise as said by others banks are often free for their customers.

Do you have any friends that work at a law firm? Half the staff at law firms are notaries since just about every pleading to be filed with the Court has to have a documents called "proof of service" (it states that the attorney served the other party with the the same documents they are filing with the Court) which is required to be notarized.

Unless it's gone up, you can only legally charge $3 in North Carolina, but that is per signature and some documents have several. Your bank is your best bet for free notarizing.

I am a notary in VA - you can go to Notaryrotary.com - put in your zip code and find a notary who is local to you. We can charge up to $5 per notarization in VA - if the person comes to me - I don't charge anything.

Banks. MIL had things notarized for free at BOA, and we could have had something notarized at our bank, but it was when Wamu was switching over to Chase and it was a DVC form that said "mortgage" and they practically brought out garlic and stakes to keep that form away from them. Sent us over to Wells Fargo, where we do NOT have an account, and they notarized it for us for free. Awfully nice of them, even though we despise WF otherwise.
