I am wondering if I made a smart move....with the price of gas skyrocketing, I bit the bullet and bought my airfare now for July travel (July 30 -Aug 01) from AB to BC....I am shocked at the prices, I have never paid $1,600.00 for 4 ppl to fly ONE PROVINCE over!!! The prices are crazy... $149 going and $159 returning... I was hoping to maybe see $99 each way, but I think those prices may be a thing of the past for now, at least!!! I checked the past history and the upcoming forcasted pricing and nothing under $149 has come along for a long while!

I hate paying those kinds of prices for 5 days, but unfortunately this trip is mandatory and we have very little time to do it (need to be back to AB for work on the Tuesday after the long weekend). It's my BIL's wedding, so no real way out of it!! :) We love them and want to go, but it makes me sick to pay so much for only a 5 day trip!!!

Airfare is getting crazy expensive!

My airfare to disney was going to be more then my disney trip( 1 adult , 3 kids,7 nights pop, dp,park tickets). We are now flying, thankfully we have time. Worse yet it the luggage limits are crazy too!

Air Canada just had a seat sale and I was able to get Toronto to Saskatoon return for $471 and was really happy. Prices are often $700 return.

YAY!!! For your sale :)

I'm used to getting fares under $200 return from AB to BC.... This fare was a total sticker shock! :headache: Hopefully airfares will return to a decent level in the not-too-far future, unfortunately, I don't see that happening this summer! :sad2:

We plan our trips differently now and do mostly westcoast trips L.A (Disneyland), Palm Springs, Arizona, Hawaii etc. Fares are a bit cheaper for us from yyc and we have Starwood ownership in Cancun. With that being said we paid 1437.00 for three tickets from Calgary to Phoenix this month.

Yup it's not the airfare that kills you but the departure taxes......Pearson is the most expensive airport in the world to fly out of......and yes I have paid close to 800.00 to fly to BC round trip during the summer months....sucks but that's what happens when DH is from the other side of the country :sad2:

That was 800.00 per person by the way :)....3x800.00=2400.00 and broke :sad2:

We have a wedding we need to attend in Alberta this summer - Hubby is Best Man and the MC. We didn't consider flying for a second. We will be driving out for the 5 days.

We will take a day 1/2 to drive out and drive back home to Vancouver Island in one BIG day.

To the OP, even though you have booked your airfare, keep checking it!!!!! If it drops, see if you can get a refund on it. I have been able to. I have gone through a different company obviously because of where I am BUT sometimes they will refund you in the form of vouchers......that way you can use it for the next time you fly.

I've been looking for flights for my upcoming Disney trip. Prices seem high right now for where I'm flying from (not due to taxes). BUT I'm chalking it up to school breaks. If I try to book flights in 2 months, prices are down, A LOT. I can get a flight for $99. each way. I think looking around march break isn't good:(

I fly from Buffalo, so it's cheaper on the tax and whatever else end. Canada charges way toooo many fees to fly. Even if I pay the same for the flight, the tax and fees kill me here. I won't EVER fly from here. Especially from Toronto!! I know, that some don't have the choice tho:(

We would love to drive.....unfortunately we both have to work on the next Tuesday....Wedding is on Saturday, so only have 5 full days to work with, wayyy too little time!!! Tickets are bought now, so we will suck it up, but it is so disheartening that flights cost so much!

Thanks for the advice :) I will keep checking, but it would have to be a substantial savings for us to pay the $50.00 pp change fees. I remember the days of flying for $85 - $99 each way! No such fares in sight right now, LOL
I wish we lived close to a US airport...that would be a wonderful option, especially for our disney flights! I won't be back to Disney for about 5 more yrs. again...but the airfare is a big chunk of the costs to be sure!!

Try living in Newfoundland :-(

whenever I see people talking about waiting for seat sales at 99... 79... 59 dollars in the US I think that I must live in the third world- I'm lucky to get 99 before taxes and surcharges to halifax and it's cheaper to drive there half the time!

We just dropped 650 each YYT to MCO via united, it being the cheapest fare we'd seen in months... most others were 1000+ :(

Yep....we've been there and done that too (:goodvibes) Lived in NewBrunswick for 5 yrs.....so flights home to see relatives (British Columbia) where not to be had, needless to say.

However, this flight I'm talking about IS like trying to get a flight from Moncton to Halifax or some such distance....I used to be able to get flights from Edmonton to Victoria/Vancouver for $99 each way CDN/ PP in years past, I just think those fares are a thing of the past :sad2:

on the east coast, we now have porter which can be really reasonable... but i see where you're coming from!

good luck :)

West Jet has a seat sale on now if you book in the next day its there 15th B'day sale travel is good between March 17th and June 30th :thumbsup2

i just priced our flights with WJ since they have the "seat sale"

I guess it doesn't apply to the US since it's 1250 per person on our dates... twice as much as our united fare! plus we'd have to overnight in toronto on the way back. that's bananas!

It was on the news last night, Vancouver is now the most expensive airport to fly out of in Canada :sad2:

I have a family wedding too, in June. Because of work & time issues, I don't have the extra time to do my usual drive down to Seattle for flights, and had to suck it up flying out of YVR :scared1: $659 RT with Delta. EEK.

And domestic fares are crazy. On the news last night, one of the reasons we have more expensive air fares, is that the U.S. airline fares are subsidized by the govt, so they say. With us it's totally a user pay system.

We would love to drive.....unfortunately we both have to work on the next Tuesday....Wedding is on Saturday!

I will be at work on the Tuesday, and we are not leaving until Monday (VERY EARLY Monday). I have the ferry to contend with.

We are Road trip people though. We did West Yellowstone to Vancouver Island in one day this summer ( 18 hours door to door) And the year before we did Vancouver Island to Redding CA in one day ( enroute to DL)
My kids travel VERY WELL!:lovestruc

Couldn't you have left mid day Sunday to get home monday?

Of course Tickets are bought now so, not point questioning it.

Yes, we probably could have.....but that would have meant leaving Thursday, arriving Friday....quick go over of wedding stuff for Saturday Wedding, then depart Sunday and I really don't want every minute of this special time with my brother/sister IL and family to be about traveling! I would like to stop and smell the roses once even if it is for a very short time!!! :rotfl:

Airfare is insane this year, for my trip in December, I grabbed a WestJet flight nonstop for my flight home for $250p/p, but I still haven't bought a flight down to Florida -

cheapest I can find is $275p/p + $25 bag fee, on UA/CO, with a connection in Washington, Chicago, or Cleveland, plus with the UA/CO merger being fully completed sometime near the end of the year, I get the extra uncertainty of the two airlines cutting capacity post-merger, screwing up my entire schedule :thumbsup2
