I regularly use Amazon.com and http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/main.jsp?source=KING (using the second link helps keep one of the few remaining classical music stations in the world up and running - King FM out of Seattle - I listed to their internet broadcasts sometimes at work.)
L'Arlesienne is an opera. What you might want is a recording featuring just the two orchestral suites that Bizet extracted from that opera (shorter, cheaper, and no fat women singing in languages you don't understand... )
Quick fact: L'Arlesienne is one of the very few orchestral pieces that includes an alto saxaphone that isn't jazz inspired. (Much to the chagrin of horn players who have to put up with trying to keep in tune with a lawn mower, I mean, alto saxaphone... )
EMI does a nice job, the price is right, and you get both suites plus the enjoyable and youthful work - Symphony in C - written while Bizet was still a teenager in school what more or less was a music university.
The only downside to this CD is that they are classic recordings from the 1950s and are therefore not in the most crisp digital sound. Good conductor, though.
THANK you both sooooo much for the help.....
I did play the flute for 9 yrs but I was not familiar with him. My DD's seemed to like this particular piece, so I think I'll buy it.
