Can anyone recommend where to get a sturdy yet affordable set of luggage? Or even individual pieces? We need all new luggage before our next trip, and on 1st glance....its pretty expensive everywhere I look. Thanks!

We've bought some pretty sturdy Swiss Army Gear suitcases at Marshals for very reasonable prices.

I won't buy expensive luggage anymore because they fling it around when you fly and it ends up getting destroyed. When my parents were in better health they traveled often. They got so tired of replacing their luggage they started just duct taping it and screwing on wood blocks where the legs once were. It looked pretty bad, but I understood their frustration.

Sears will sometimes run specials on the American tourister mid range sets. I have had my set for a number of years now. I think even walmart carries American Tourister as well. I have also had good luck buying some pieces from Target when they put it on clearance. If you have time shop it around a bit and watch for sales or discontinued pieces. I second a place like Marshall's and TJ Maxx.

Macy's always has 40-60% off luggage sales and if you can go there when they have their coupon days you can get an additional 15-25% off.

Places like Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls, or Tuesday Morning often have some of the best deals around, but you'll need to be cautious about size. These are closeout deals, and sometimes they stock luggage that is now too big to fly without paying the oversize charge. (They can be heavy, too. Try to stick with pieces that weigh no more than 10 lbs. empty.)

ALWAYS bring a soft measuring tape with you when you go shopping for luggage, as the measurements on the label are often smaller than reality. The standard limit for checked bags on most US carriers is a total size (L + W + H) of 62". This INCLUDES the wheels and handles. In most cases if the bag expands, anything over a stated 27" height will be too large when expanded.

I'll roll the bag over to the linens dept and fill it with towels in order to check the size packed (putting the towels back neatly, of course), and with books, in order to check how well it rolls when it is fully packed. Duffels, in particular, have a tendency to "grow" quite a lot when filled up, and can go over limit very easily.

For carryons, most US carriers currently limit to no more than 22" (height). However, size allowances for carryons have been dropping elsewhere in the world. If there is any chance that you might need to use it to fly outside the US, I'd stick to no more than 19" tall if at all possible.

The kind of cheap luggage (complete sets for under $100) sold in stores like WalMart and Target aren't expected to last even one flight.

I'll second the suggestion of Marshalls, TJ Max etc. A 26" or 27" bag is probably the right size. Anything bigger might be oversized and will be overweight if packed full.

Industry standard is 62" and 50 lbs but at least one airline has a maximum of 61" and another has a maximum weight of 40 lbs.

I understand your frustration with prices of luggage, but if you buy Briggs & Riley then you shouldn't need to replace it, ever. Briggs & Riley offers lifetime warranties, even from damage caused by airlines/luggage handlers, etc.

They are investment to purchase up front, but you'll save in the long run. Their Transcend line is for general leisure travelers and are a little lower in cost, but offer the same warranty protections.
