Not on dining plan? Beware the chocolate milk!

It sounds like the kids had refills and were charged for it. That is normal to me as I can't recall any restaurants we visit that have free refills on milk.

ETA-Oops, sorry, OP, I see now you responded about this in another post.

Just wondering: why do you feel it's not okay to ask for water at a TS meal? Most of the time I feel that my kids don't need the extra sugar associated with soda (we really limit our intake at home), and water is one of the best things you can drink during a hot day at the parks. They also don't need the caffeine associated with coffee or tea, lol. Plus, it saves us over $10. per TS meal for a family of 5 to have water (although my dh will almost always get a cup of coffee). Usually, all I really want is water; I was restricted from caffeine for several months (due to irreg. heartbeat) and don't need the calories from soda....when you subtract all those choices you really aren't left with much to be able to order.

As a server do you feel you're being hurt when there isn't a drink order other than water? A lot of places include both when you order, so there's still as much work involved. We always tip very well in general (drinks or no drinks) so I'm trying to understand where you're coming from.

I was wondering the same thing. My DH and I always order water. First of all, soda is OUTRAGEOUSLY priced ($2.99 for a huge glass that we never drink all of). But more importantly, I have reflux and pretty much can only drink water. I don't understand why this would upset a server:confused3 Unless maybe they feel jipped because they aren't getting tipped on water?:rolleyes1

Agree that I do not know of any restaurant that gives free refills on milk. :confused3
If I have something above soda or ice tea, and it does not state on the menu free refills, I ask.

I would have said something to my server as to why I was not notified that chocolate milk was going to be over $5 per glass. I'm a server myself and would have definitely mentioned this to a parent. I don't really agree with going out to eat and just ordering water just to get something for free (although there is no free water at the restaurant I work at), but I would have not been happy for a $5 childs chocolate milk!

My family orders water at every meal because we don't let the kids have much soda and we are all big water drinkers. It's not about getting something for free.:rotfl2:

If water is what I want to drink, that's what I'm going to order.

ETA: That's what drives me nuts about milk, chocolate or white. You get unlimited refills on soda, but get charged for every drop of milk.

dude, yeah.....when I was a CM, we could drink as much soda as we wanted.....but one night after running around like a chicken with my head cut off (I ate lunch at 12 and working, I didn't ever eat till midnight) I needed something more substantial and nutritious and I had to ASK my manager to have some milk....he eventually agreed after asking nicely :) haha

if i've got to pay for a milk refill, I figure in the long run it's saving me big $$$$ on dentist bills! lol!

I don't think there has been one place I've gone out to eat that would offer free milk re-fills or even on juice! They usually only give free re-fills on items that contain a lot of water and thus don't cost them all that much...such as tea, soda, and lemonade.

Ok so yeah I am with PP's that say I have never seen free refills on milk anywhere. But just as a side note Olive Garden has refills on their juice! haha. My hubby always orders OJ there since they have free refills. He is also a camel when he drinks (think 5 glasses of OJ at one sitting!) so I always tease him saying that after he leave they have to run across the street to Target to get more OJ for their alcoholic beverages! hehe.

Most places do not have free refills on milk. Fountain soda, and Tea cost pennies to serve, and that is why they have free refills. I was in the restuarant business for 8 years, and I can tell you that iced tea cost less than five cents a glass to serve. There is a much smaller mark up on milk and juice than there is fountain soda, tea, and coffee. As a server, it is one of those things where you can't win, when explaining free refills to a guest. If you say, "refills are not free on milk", the person may assume that you think that they cannot afford a refill. If the guest asks for a refill, and then is charged they may be mad that the server didn't tell them that there was a charge for a milk refill.

I would rather pay that price for milk than soda for my kids - at least milk is better for them!

Around here too, you rarely get free refills on milk. I've gotten in the habit of asking "are refills complimentary" when a server asks if I'd like a refill. When requesting refills on milk I always inquire about price first. If they aren't free I order water.

Here too. If you get anything except soda or tea around here (in any restaurant) then they charge you full price for a new one.

With my kids, we don't let them refill even when refills are free. We make them switch to water. They both drink a lot, and they don't need the added sugar or calories. They get enough milk during the day that they don't need 2 full glasses at dinner.

My 13 year old usually orders Coke, which comes in an adult sized glass now at his age, which are HUGE! There is more than one serving size in that glass, so there is no way he is drinking two of those!! :scared1:

I hear ya. We learned the hard way that they will not eat their dinners if they drink too much milk.

Too funny!!!

I'm a server and I don't worry about things like that, really a soft drink costs only about $2.00 and if the standard tip is 15% it means I'm missing out on 30 cents! Not a big deal, at least people are still coming in! I'd rather have ppl come and eat and not spend alot then not come at all.

:lmao: my in-laws do this all the time and it is soooo embarrassing!!!!

Laughing at the Ghetto Lemonade! HA HA HA!

Ok I LIKE ghetto lemonade!!! I don't however ask for a bowl of lemons or anything. I just use the 1 lemon they give me and put 1 packet of sweetner in my glass. After that if they just refil my glass then that is it, if they bring me another glass with another lemon I will make it again. But I water down everything - koolaid and juice must be water down by at least 50%. Those packets that you are suppose to put in a 16oz glass I put in 32oz and then pour my glass from that.

$2.69 (x2) for chocolate milk is very reasonable.

I agree. I have never agreed with people who think WDW food is so expensive. Canada's Wonderland up here blows Disney away when it comes to over charging.
