Every six weeks, dd's school has an assembly where they pass out awards for honor roll and special awards for each grade; Most Improved Student and Outstanding Citizenship. If your child is receiving an award, you get a note sent to your house so you will know to attend.

Well, today was the last award assembly of the year, and they gave out a bunch of special, year-end awards. My daughter was named Best All Around Student for the 4th grade, as well as Best Math Student, Best Science Student, Outstanding Creative Writing, Best PE Student, and another award for reading more books than any other 4th grader.

But I didn't know any of this until I picked her up from school, because whoops! The school didn't send me a note. The assembly isn't even printed on the school calendar or on the marquee. This is our first year at this school, so we didn't know there would be a year-end assembly with special awards.

Dd is quite unhappy that we weren't there to see her win all her awards, and of course I feel horrible about it myself.

Something similar happened to us earlier in the year. The kindergarteners take turns saying the date at the monthly assembly. When it was DS's turn we went, took pictures and generally made a fuss over him. When it was DD's turn nobody sent us the note, so we, of course, didn't go. We felt horrible and DD was very upset.

I know things sometimes get overlooked (goodness knows I do it all the time), it's just difficult when it's hapening to you.

Sounds like our friends whose son worked very hard to get on the honor roll. On the last grading period of his senior year, he finally made it. Only it wasn't printed in the newspaper. It seems that the office sent the newpaper the previous grading period's roster. Oops. So sorry. Nothing they can do about it.

I'm sorry you missed your DDs award ceremony. I truly feel your pain.

I'm so sorry you missed it!
Sounds like your DD just about the swept the awards. You'd think they would have made a point of letting you know.

Give your DD a big CONGRATULATIONS and WAY TO GO from your Dis friends. :thumbsup2

Towncrier,
I hate that last semester senior year thing too. It tends to get lost in the shuffle pretty easily.

DD's high school gives out honor cords for every semester but that one and they just ignore it. DD got all A's and that last silver honor cord sure would have looked nice with the cap and gown tomorrow.
Oh well, what can you do?

As a parent who is about to go to my childs awards ceremony tonight, I feel your pain. You really missed out on a proud parent moment. For your daughter, I'm sure she was sad they you were not able to see her get the special awards. Give her a hug and let her know that you didn't know anything about it. Maybe you can video her tonight while she explains why she got the awards that she did.

ACK ACK ACK....I know how you feel.
I missed 9yodd getting HER FIRST TROPHY for winning first place in the UIL competition a few month ago.

I did go to her awards ceremony however...they also did not send a note home.:confused3
She got 5 awards, one award was voted on by her classmates for writing. DD was to be a writer.

So congrats to your dd...Can you bring the awards up there tomorrow and get a pic with the teacher?
Save face that way perhaps?

My youngest has gotten awards every marking period this year. They've sent out notices for the awards ceremonies, but not specifically stating your child would be receiving one.

I think a lot of parents complained-the end of year one came for youngest saying "Your child won an award". I won't miss tomorrow's ceremony!

My child simply didn't tell us about the end of the year awards assembly. Of course the sports banquet was all he talked about for weeks and granted we all dressed up and went and he won awards in basketball, football and track.

Well he also won A average, ABC participation, ACT participation (only 2 in the entire class) and Student Council and Beta recognition but he could care less about the academic side of it. Makes me want to whop him.

This is our first year at a new school.

I think many of the staff *assume* you know about things - we had field day last week - I wasn't aware they had PAID concessions there! I had brought snacks/Capri Sun for my ds' 5th grade class. I'll be talking to the PTF reps about having breaks for the day, anyway, with water/juice box donations.

That's not all... Tomorrow is the last day of school.. the calendar says "promotion" for tomorrow night. Yesterday, I found out that 5th graders "graduate" during promotion. So much for inviting anyone else!
