Not enough points?

I am a frequenter over on the cruise board, but really thinking about the DVC. I know this has to have been asked, but i can't find it. My main question is about the points. I know that I can bank and borrow, but if I don' have enough points, do you have to rent or can you pay the difference, and is there somewhere to see what the "difference" points will cost you, or is that a property by property basis? For instance - one week costs 200 points but due to other vacations or whatever, I have 180 available. Can I not book that, or can I pay the difference, or how does that work? Thanks for the information.

Disney doesn't book in weeks, but in days. Each property has its own points chart showing how many points are required per night, depending on the size/type of room and the time of year.

If you are short points, you can get points transferred from another member (once per year) and make 1 reservation, rent points/reservation from another member which they retain control of so that would be 2 separate reservations, or pay cash for nights, which would also be two reservations.

Member Services has the ability to link reservations in many cases.

Each night must be paid for with all points or all cash.

There is a 25% member discount for cash nights, but it is not always available.

I use a site tagrel.com for point values. You check off which resorts you want to see and plug in your dates and it spits out the point values for all the resorts you checked off and all the options (studio - THV).

I also use a google spreadsheet that is basically a checkbook register but I use it for my points. I put 180 points to start with and then subtract them as I use them and make future ressies. That way I know where my points went or are going. We usually get two trips a year but if we go at off-season we can fit three trips. We are fitting three trips this year because I had a couple points left over from last year and we ended up have to borrow 2 points from next year.

So basically when you buy in to begin with you need to look at your past trips and when you "normally" go and see how many points you normally would use and buy that many. If we'd want to go a 4th time then we'd use our AP discount and go cash.

In your example above, provided you had the points available, the easiest thing to do would be to borrow the 20 points from the next year. However, if you had used all of your next year's points, then, yes, you could pay cash for the one night that you needed, or accept a transfer from another DVC member. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the info. I think I get it now! I just saw several point totals for weeks, then by day. Just wondering about extending days past what points you may have.
