Not All Treasure Is Silver And Gold, Mate - *Update 9-17* P60

This most be some sort of twist of fate, some perverse coincidence.

But without fail, for the past two years, it has rained the morning we've left. And when I say morning, I mean, it's still dark out. Dark and cold and wet.

And guess who packed the car?

Oh, yeah. Me. :lmao:

The reason this is such a funny memory for me is twofold, one, because it was raining last year when we left, and two, because I had the same exact feeling. It's a feeling of excitement combined with nervousness.

I have a confession to make. I don't enjoy flying.

At. All.

As a matter of fact, just a few short years ago, I was TERRIFIED of it. Which is really ironic, considering that my sister is a pilot. Could we BE more opposite? :lmao:

Part of the problem is that I have a fear of heights. Part of the problem is that I'm claustrophobic. And part of the problem is just that I have control issues, and let's face it, flying is giving a lot of trust to people you don't know. AT. ALL.

Fortunately, because my sister has flown for commercial airlines, I'm fully aware of the rigors those pilots are put through to stay current, so there is a confidence level there. And quite frankly, for the majority, those planes fly themselves.

But these are all rational thoughts. It doesn't change the fact that I'm not really thrilled with flying. And that I did it a lot in the past year. Almost over my threshold, really. So, when I get ready to leave on vacation, regardless of where we're going, if we're flying, I'm always the first one up, and although I'm excited to be going, I'm also rushing.

Because honestly, I just want to get it over with.

Couple that with the fact that I keep it all inside, because I'm determined not to pass my fears on to my son. So yes, you'll here me saying "wheeeeee!" when we lift off and telling him how much fun this great ride is, when inside I'm wishing it was over already.

I do have to say that having a little one with you though, really helps to distract from your own issues, because really, you don't have time to worry about them. :lmao:

So keep in mind, it was with all this particular kind of turmoil that we got ready that Sunday. I must have told my husband five times to get in the shower already and start getting ready. And when he didn't get ready fast enough to suit me, well, heck, I decided to pack the car myself.

Which is when I started hefting our luggage downstairs, and then opened the door to discover that the rain rain rain came down down down. I half expected to see poor Piglet floating by. :confused3

And I guess at that point, I had to laugh. Internally. Because my DS was still sleeping, and hearing your mom laughing maniacally is probably not a good way to wake up, even if you are going to Disney World. :lmao:

I just couldn't believe that it was raining. Again. Back up the stairs I went to get my rain coat. Up and down, up and down, trying to get everything to fit into the car. Which really wasn't too bad, now that I have the CR-V.

I do have to say, one of the pleasant things about this year was being able to leave my car packed and not having to transfer luggage to my mom's car because we wouldn't have all fit in my old car when she brought us to the airport. This was so simple, leave CR-V packed, pick up Mom, Mom drives my car back to her house.

We won't talk about how hard it is for me to hand over the keys to my new baby. ;)

So there we go, folks. The beginning. The way that I knew it was going to be a good vacation.

Rain.

It rained on my wedding day, and it rained when we left for Disney. Did you know that rain on your wedding day is good luck? We've been lucky for seven years, so I'm thinking, it's working.

And as we got to the airport, after listening to the Illuminations CD in the car, at my son's request, the rain let up. Just like on the day we got married. We went into church, it was raining, when we came out from mass, it was done.

Such is the way of the TK clan.

We're a lucky sort. pirate:

I knew I liked you for a reason. ;)

No seriously, I don't like flying, but I'm much better about it than I used to be. All I can say, is, it's important to think happy thoughts.

Like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. Maybe you should bring some pixie dust. :goodvibes

Thank you!

Since we are all having confessions. . .here goes--I really should fly down in December rather than drive. It makes so much more sense. Except for one problem. . .I have never flown because I'm terrified of it.

There, I said it.

AND it seems to rain on us when we go to Disney, too. . .

rain is good luck.

you know why?

It makes...

RAINBOWS!

My wedding day.

I'm ok once I'm in the air. It's landing I'm not so crazy about. I think it's very cool you are trying hard not to pass that on to your son.

It rained on our wedding day too and we're 17 years of going strong. :lovestruc And it rained on our Disney departure day too.

As I've gotten older flying has made me more nervous. I still do it, but I don't do it as enthusiastically as I used to. My BFF who's having her birthday in December is terrified of flying, so we're driving to Disney for her trip!

I feel like we need to start a support group. I had no idea so many people shared my sentiments! :goodvibes

Must be a good sign, because you had a great last trip with the kiddos, right? :goodvibes By the way, by the time I got caught up on that trip report, it was completed and closed. I just wanted to say thanks for writing it, I really enjoyed reading about all your adventures.

My wedding day.

AWWW!!!! Rainbows on your wedding day, what's better than that? :thumbsup2

I'm similar. Once we're in the air, I'm good. I think take off bothers me more than landing.

I do try not to pass any of my fears onto my son.

That's how I was able to buck up and ride Soarin' for the first time with him in December of last year. I had to take one for the team. :lmao:

Congrats on 17 years! :goodvibes

I'm all for doing whatever you're more comfortable with. Because of where we are in New England, I can't fathom the drive down. Unless I were to work it in that we were stopping and doing a leisurely drive down, but that really eats into your Disney time.

What a fantastic update!!!

Glad you enjoyed it.

You should be a writer.

Wow, thank you!

I've actually thought about starting a novel. I'm having a hard time deciding what to write about. You know, I remember when I was in third grade (on up) we had lots of creative writing assignments and my teachers always put in my progress reports that they thought I would be a writer.

I then had a college professor tell me the same thing, later on in life.

Funny how no matter what we end up doing we always gravitate back towards those things we love.

For me, the tie dye shirts are my artistic (painterly) expressions right now, and the DIS is my writing.

As Jack would say, funny ole world, isn't it?

It rained on my wedding day too!

I'm not a huge fan of flying but I see it as a necessary evil to get where I want to go. I think landing is my downfall. Everything else, takeoff and such I can handle. Landing just scares the carp out of me. :scared1:

See! So many happy marriages. :thumbsup2

You know, for me, landing is such a big relief. Like, yay, we're here, I'm done! :lmao:

TK, my dear, we are so alike in our dislike of flying, and it's for the very same reasons. I have major control issues (hmmm, perhaps that is why I won't let Charles drive to Disney), and the thought of putting my life into the hands of strangers -- well, not liking it all that much. When I was younger and before 9/11, I never gave flying a second thought, but after having kids -- well, I just can't get jazzed about getting in a tin can that goes 500 miles an hour. :sad2:

I hope the rain proves to be a great omen for the rest of your trip!

Nah, I don't think we need a support group. All those people who love to fly and land need some serious therapy.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :rolleyes1

Thanks for the comments about my last TR. I might have finished it while you were gone. I can't remember. I enjoyed writing it for all of you. And, btw, I personally believe writing TRs is our way of refusing to believe the trip is over. Gives us closure, kwim?

And without closure, we might really need therapy!

Oh, and I just realized--1 year ago today it was like 40 degrees in Magic Kingdom and I was sitting on the curb on Main Street waiting for the Boo to You parade. :(

TK-
Great start!!!! Wow about everyone hating flying. I stayed up the whole night before my flight to Hawaii for my honeymoon. I was able to sleep about 1/2 of the flight... Not good sleep though. The sleep where you keep opening one eye to see if your still alive sleep! :lmao:

Unfortunately (or fortunately), it didn't rain on my wedding day. We got married at the end of September thinking it would be a nice fall day. It was hot- 88 with humidity! I thought I was going to pass out!

There is no way my DW would pack the car. So cheers to you!:drinking: <-- Rum bottle!

I also hate, hate, hate to fly. I know it's supposed to be the safest way to travel, but I just have a phobia about it. I used to have to fly a lot in my job, the best thing about being retired, except for having extra time to spend with my grandson, is not having to fly anymore! I live south of Atlanta so it's only about a 7 hour drive for me and I'll do that over flying any day!

So...

I am wondering if you heard about the pilots that forgot to land last week? :rotfl:

If not...

Sorry! :rolleyes1

Great start! I can't believe it rained! On the first morning AND your wedding morning! :faint:

Awesome start!

Great update TK!!

I don't mind flying...once I get to the airport:lmao: The 2 weeks or so leading up to the 'big day' I'm a nervous wreck. I have NO idea why:confused3

It rained for Tom and I's wedding too! The wierd part about that is that it was in the 60's and raining..... in mid January in Ohio!! Who'd a thunk??

About the pilots forgetting to land.... they said they were distracted by their laptops.... you think they were DISing????
