More people claim to be Irish in the US than the total population of Ireland. I guess that's the power of immigration. Heck, I think there are more in Australia who claim to be Irish than the total population of Ireland.

Still, a lot of people have freckles and dark hair, including people of Asian and African ancestry. I have freckles and zero Irish ancestry.

I live in a town of around 18k where most claim Irish ancestry. We are known as the most Irish town in the US. DH recently connected with some cousins in Ireland. My father in law immigrated to the US around 1960 while his brother immigrated to Australia. The brother returned to Ireland but his older children remained in Australia and younger one was raised in Ireland.

I am Irish Catholic with 7 siblings (grandparents immigrated). No red hair but plenty of freckles. My mother used to hate the term "paddy wagon" because the insinuation that all Irish were drunks.

My dads side has Irish, Welsh, and English.
My mums has Italian, French, and German.

I have no idea what that makes me except a little fiery at times ;)

I'm 37% Irish, which isn't much, but is the largest percentage. I'm basically a European mutt. No freckles or red hair. But both my wife (about 1/2 Irish) and daughter are very light skinned and burn super easy.

The Irish on my mom's said is from Bushmills. Which is a great excuse to drink whiskey.

I am Irish- both great-grandparents emigrated to America in the early 1900's- I am third generation Irish American. I do have the red hair and green eyes- but no freckles. Was also raised Catholic in a huge family- I have 72 cousins! As soon as people see me they automatically assume I am Irish- so yes, it is a stereotype most people think of. Funny thing is, our of all my cousins, there are only 2 of us with red hair. My great grandfather had it, both everyone else is blonde with either blue or green eyes.

I am not your typical Irish though---I hate whiskey and potatoes! LOL

I'm 25% Irish 25% German on my mother's side and have no clue to the other half which happens to be on my father's side..but my father, mother, sister and myself are brown haired green eyed.

As far as stereotypes go nowadays it's the whole millennials are this millennials are that..it's very tiring to be categorized as a lazy, broke-living in my mom's house, spoiled, entitled, terrible work ethic yada yada yada type person.

The all Americans is quite annoying though too.

ok, so this has been bugging me, WHY do American people think that all Irish have red hair and freckles??? Seriously now, Im Irish, and hardly anyone in my family looks like this, and very few people I see on a day to day basis, on the bus, in the mall, at work have red hair and freckles.

So are their stereotypes that bug you, that you know are not true that are in common use?

I haven't read any of the responses, but when I think Irish, I think tall, dark and handsome: Pierce Brosnan!

And then I think Aidan Turner, Colin Farrell, Allen Leech, Jonathan Rhys Meyers ... :goodvibes
