Not a frequent flyer...

Would it be worth a try? We're leaving for our trip at 5:50 am. Right now, our layover is 3 hrs. When I check in from our departure city, can I try to "upgrade" to the flight that has the 25 minute layover?

Using kayak, I booked our flight. the 45 min layover wasn't available at the time, but it is now... of course at a higher rate.

Has anyone tried this?

I'm wondering if talking to an actual person at check in will do this....

hope that makes sense!

I think it would depend on what airport your layover is in and how long it might take to get from where your incoming flight lands and the next flight departs from. We don't fly a lot but I don't like arranging a layover of less than an hour. I don't like frantically running for my next flight if the first one is running late and I'd rather have time to grab something to eat, etc. and relax a little before the next leg.

I agree, with the way things get delayed, I like to leave more time than less.

but it is up to you I would ring and ask if that is what you want to do.

Delta just changed our schedule for the way back and now we have approx. 40 minutes to get from one gate to another at the Atlanta airport. It makes me VERY upset (when I booked it, we had an 1 hr/15 mins), and I'm just praying we can make it in time!

45 minutes is hardly a layover... considering that boarding begins 30 minutes prior to departure.

If you GET to the airport in time, RUN over to the gate with the flight that leaves earlier. Talk to the gate agent there, tell him/her that you would rather take the earlier flight, and if there is room, they will probably add you to that flight instead.

But it is NEVER a good idea to ALLOW yourself only 45 minutes between flights.

I wont ever give myself under an hour for any connecting flight AT ALL - domestic or international. Good thing my mother paid for a bit extra for non stops for me, my sister's 2 kids and herself.

I had to ensure when I went to Ireland last year and had to connect in Boston that I had 2 hours minimum. So what if i had to look around in the shops near the gate to pass the time before check-in. I had the peace of mind which was priceless. Good thing I fought for extra time to and from Ireland. There were some delays more onto getting to Boston compared to leaving it. Not like the delays I had connecting in JFK the previous year - I learned my lesson quickly.

If you do manage to get on the earlier flight your checked bags will not be on it as well.

I am totally paranoid when it comes to layovers - I prefer about 2 hours, just to be on the safe side :) I had an emergency trip to England last year (had to book it while at Disney, so didn't really check the times too well) - when I flew back from England, I realised I had a very short layover, and spent the flight across the Atlantic convinced we would miss the connecting flight. Thankfully, we were OK - but that won't happen again :)
